Speech Homework

(Third Person. Landon - 10 years old)

Landon was sitting on the couch, attempting to engross himself in his book. His efforts were a bit futile, as his older sister, Sammie was attempting to write her speech on cellphone usage in the same room.

"...cellphones are very useful. That's why lots of people should have them. They allow us to communicate better."

"You should rearrange the last two sentences. It'll sound more natural," he commented without even looking up.

Sammie turned to her brother, a smile beginning to form. "Well, aren't you good at this."

Landon shrugged uncomfortably and buried his head further into the text. Compliments from either one of his sisters weren't necessarily good things.

Sammie snatched the book out of his hands and got eye level with him. "Wanna finish this for me?"

Landon shifted awkwardly. "Don't you think it's a bit insulting to yourself that you think a ten-year-old could do it better than you?"

Sammie grabbed a lock of Landon's hair and twirled it around her finger once as she shrugged. "Maybe it's just that I know I have better things to do. Like hanging out with friends. And I know you don't have that problem."

"Sammie, that's not fair," Landon tried reasoning, but his sister had already pulled out her phone and started to scroll. "What are you doing?" he asked, growing stiff.

"Remember that time we dressed you up as a girl?"

Landon ran his fingers along the scar on his opposite palm, but didn't reply.

"I'm pretty sure Kelly has a little sister in your grade. It'd be a shame if certain photos started making their way around-"

"Sammie," he pleaded.

She handed him her speech notebook and pen. "It's your choice."

Landon sighed, knowing it really wasn't.
