Bugs
(Third Person. Landon - 6 years old)
Sammie Price had her homework on top of the kitchen table. Like always, she waited until the last possible moment to finish it. Although today's homework didn't just consist of notebooks and papers. Her 6th grade life science class was studying how different organisms interacted with one another. Her teacher had given her a clear case filled with insects to observe.
Her younger brother, Landon, eyed the plastic terrarium cautiously while pouring himself a bowl of cereal. "What's that for?"
"It's for my stupid homework," Sammie groaned. "I have to watch these bugs interact and write 10 observations. I don't even think my teacher knows anything about bugs. Why should I have to?"
She stared at the case and lost patience about three and a half seconds in and began tapping on the plastic. "Are they even alive?"
She took off the lid for a better view. Sure enough, the various species of insects were moving, but not doing much else. Sammie groaned again and scribbled down her first observation.
1 They are BORING!!
It wasn't long before she lost focus of her assignment again.
"I'm getting food," she decided. While getting up, she accidentally knocked the open cage onto her brother's lap.
The slimy or many legged creatures crawling all over his skin was enough to make Landon scream and practically jump out of his chair. He spun around and started shaking like crazy in an attempt to brush them off.
Sammie giggled as she started to place a couple bugs back in the case. "What's the matter, Landon? Scared of bugs?" she asked, not bothering to hide her amusement.
Landon folded his arms in embarrassment. "No."
"Are you sure?" Sammie picked up one of the worms and dangled it closer to his face
He backed away anxiously, accidentally bumping into one of the kitchen cabinets. Sammie flashed a smug smile at her proven point.
She placed the worm in the case and closed the lid. "I'll just tell my teacher the rest of the bugs all ate each other."
"But what about the other's?" Landon pressed. "What are you gonna do about them?"
"Nothing," Sammie replied. "They could be anywhere by now."
If possible, Landon went even paler. "We have to find them."
"Nah." Sammie shut down his request, giving his head a demeaning pat. "That's too much work. Although I guess I do have another observation now. I can write that they scare my little brother." And with that, Sammie placed a granola bar in her backpack, grabbing both that and her big case with a reduced population, and headed out the door, leaving Landon alone to think about all the places the other bugs could be.
