A noise jolts me awake. I go to pull out a knife but I don't have one on me. I'm glad because Sienna is sitting next to me. I'm worried I'll end up hurting someone before I even get out of here.

"I'm leaving with you," Sienna says.

"Ok." I frown, not expecting that statement. My heart is still pounding against my ribcage as I try to compose myself. It's Sienna. The Officials have gone. Jeremiah is not here.

"I can't stay here anymore. People are giving me grief about what I used to do before joining The Organisation." Sienna huffs. "I hate the stupid mark they gave me."

I frown confused. "What mark? And who are you talking about?"

"Officials. The State. After I was tortured and I told them everything I knew, they gave me a mark. They'd also booked me in to be sterilised but they were chased out before it took place." Sienna flicks her arm around to show me a large image of a naked woman with The State currency symbol placed over her mouth, breasts and genital area.

How have I not noticed this before?

"You'd think we'd be united with the whole hating The State but no, even in the supposed new world there's a hierarchy. Just because I decided I'd rather fuck people than be sent here, does not make them better than me."

"Who's been saying they're better?" I ask.

"People. Teddy's been trying to help, but half of them hate him because he's an ex-Official. The only reason they're tolerating him is because he's helping them train and he's showing them the ways of The Officials. Do you know Terrell wants all Officials to be killed, whether they rejected The State or not? If I was Teddy, I would leave asap. Especially as Terrell is looking set to win the voting today." Sienna shakes her head. "When you leave, I'm coming with you."

I nod. My stomach sinking because I had assumed Sienna would continue to look after Grey.

"Can I sleep in here with you tonight?" Sienna says.

"Of course," I say surprised.

What have these people been saying for her to want to hide in here with me? I've been so self-absorbed, I've been ignoring Sienna whilst she's struggling

Sienna falls asleep quickly however I can't. My mind is racing, going over what will happen to Grey, what will happen to me and Sienna when we leave. I quietly step outside the cupboard and walk straight into Grey.

He smiles gently. "So it's true, you're sleeping in a cupboard?"

"Where I sleep is my choice," I say stiffly.

"Cady the rebel: sleeps where she wants, when she wants," Grey says softly.

My heart aches with longing to return to how we were. The short period of time in my life when I felt a sense of belonging, of being wanted.

"I don't like to think you're sleeping in the cupboard because you're hiding. I want you to be happy." Grey furrows his brow.

"Happy?" I ask sarcastically.

"It's time for you to start taking care of yourself, Cady."

"I am taking care of myself." I cross my arms.

Grey arches an eyebrow. "Really, is that why you've started training with Teddy?"

"Who-"

"Sienna's been updating me on how you're doing. Why are you training to fight for The Organisation?" Grey's eyes lock with mine. "Why are you so determined on getting yourself killed?"

I gape at him. "Are you being serious? You gave up the ability to question my decisions when you made it clear you wanted nothing to do with me."

Grey presses his lips together. I'm irritated at his interference and indifference, at the idea of him talking to Sienna, especially when it's about me.

"Is this the only reason you're here? To tell me you disapprove of me training how to defend myself?" I snap.

"I don't want you to get hurt," Grey says with no emotion, his face is an unreadable mask.

"Too late," I hiss.

I dart back into the cupboard, leaving him outside. I can't cope hearing more of his words which ignite feelings I'm trying to rid myself of. Grey's right, it's time to start taking care of myself, and the first thing I'm going to do is plan my departure from here.
