36. Split Personality
Jeremiah holds my face delicately as he tenderly wipes my face with a cloth. He's insane. It's the only logical conclusion to explain his split personality which flips from caring to punisher within a matter of seconds.
"I used to be a doctor. I thrive on helping people and making them better. That's what I'm trying to do here, Cady. I'm trying to improve our citizens' lives, to make our society a safer place to live. I don't enjoy seeing people in pain but you're making me do this. By not cooperating, you're forcing me to punish the two of you or should I say three of you?" Jeremiah smiles gesturing towards the plate in front of me. "Eat some more food, Cady, you need to keep your strength up."
I pick up the sandwich and take another bite. I'm not speaking. I've decided I'll only contribute to the conversation when I'm asked a direct question. It seems like the safest option. My hand is trembling as I put the sandwich back.
"As I was saying, I used to be a doctor in a major hospital. I was renowned for my ability to save individuals even when everyone else had predicted a fatal outcome. Yet, for me, it was never enough. I got so tired of still seeing people die, of not being able to save everyone. Even with all the advancements made within medicine, I would have to watch young children die of cancer, individuals suffer due to genetic disorders, people dying due to accidents. My empathy was the drive behind my move into research and eventually, I was approached about working here. You see, I extract useful information from certain individuals like you and Grey for The State and in return, they will fund any experiments I want to trial. I have a whole camp of volunteers I can choose from to participate. It's a win-win situation." Jeremiah wipes my face again. "So you tell me everything about The Resistance, and I can continue to research ways of treating cancer and of rehabilitating people with brain damage. It's that simple, tell me what you know and people will benefit; hundreds of thousands of moral, law-abiding citizens who deserve to live. Do you understand?"
"Yes," I say.
"Tell me everything." Jeremiah smiles widely.
"What do you want to know?"
"What are their plans? Their next moves? How does The Resistance work? How do they pass messages to each other? Who are the top leaders? I need names, addresses, everything."
"I don't know any of that information," I say.
Jeremiah frowns, grabs my head and smashes it on the table in front of me. He presses down, using his entire body weight. I scream loudly as my face is compressed against the now broken plate which cuts into my face.
"Don't lie to me, Cady. You're an Unmarked. You were bred to be a key component in The Resistance's movement. I thought we had an understanding, I thought you were going to cooperate but obviously not. If you want to do this the hard way, we will. This is your fault, Cady. You choose this route, not me."
Jeremiah storms out the room and I don't dare move as tears fall down my cheeks. I've come to two final conclusions: Jeremiah is definitely insane and nothing I say will ever be enough.
