33. Confused
My head feels heavy as I wake slowly from another nap. I'm not sure how long I've been in this room. If I go by dry raw throat and the stabbing pains in my stomach, it's been a while.
Teddy hasn't been back which I'm thankful for. I wouldn't be able to stand being subjected to his attempts at trying to take care of me and make me believe in The State's ideals.
Instead, I've spent the time laying on the mattress drifting in and out of sleep. It's strange how even when faced with certain torture and death I can still sleep.
"Cady, are you awake?" A voice asks.
I force my heavy eyes to open and take a sharp intake of breath. I must be dreaming. This can't be real. Grey's hand is tucking a strand of hair behind my ear while his eyes are fixed on mine. My heart beats erratically as I search his battered and bruised face. His injuries look bad but that doesn't stop the sensation of joy flowing through me. He's alive.
"Finally, you're awake. You've been asleep for ages. We were getting worried," Sienna says over his shoulder.
"Why didn't you wake me?" I croak.
"Grey said we should let you sleep." Sienna shrugs. "It's not like we're in a rush. We don't have anywhere to go."
Grey's fingers move over a tender spot on my head and I wince slightly.
"They must have hit you pretty hard in the head." Grey leans forward to inspect the lump. "Tell me you didn't come to find me," Grey voice is so quiet I hardly hear him.
His distinct familiar smell wraps around me making me want to grab him and never let go. I want to lean forward and kiss him. I want to sink into him while he tells me what he's thinking. Is he as overjoyed to see me as I am to see him? I can't tell from his unreadable expression.
"I thought you were dead," I whisper.
"I wasn't that lucky." Grey frowns and I see a glimpse of the anguish and torment. He's suffered here, more than the last time he was in a labour camp, and that was already enough to traumatise him.
"You two know each other?" Sienna interrupts. Her face frowns in confusion as she rests her hand on Grey who flinches slightly and shrugs it off.
"Vaguely. She worked briefly at the fight club I was in," Grey says coolly.
He leans back removing his hand, distancing himself and the space around me is suddenly too empty. I want Grey near me and touching me. He doesn't. He barely looks at me and I wonder what's changed. Is it Sienna? Confronted with the two of us, he's chosen her.
Sienna nods satisfied with his answer while my stomach turns to lead and weighs me down. Sienna focuses on me and her eyes drift down to my stomach. "How are you feeling? Is the nausea still bad?"
"I'm fine," I say a little too harshly.
Sitting up, I cross my arms over my stomach. Don't act like this. Sienna has been your saviour and a good friend.
I soften my voice. "Thanks for asking, but we've got more important things to worry about than my dodgy stomach."
"Are you ill?" Grey frowns.
Sienna opens her mouth. "Cady is-"
"Suffering from food poisoning," I interrupt, sending a warning look at Sienna to not say anything further. I can't bear for Grey to work out he's the father or worse, think it's someone else. His distant behaviour tells me he wants nothing to do with me, and the three of us are unlikely to survive this so there's no point in making this harder for all of us. Not when we're all going to die.
"Why have they put us in the same room?" Sienna asks
"They're watching us," Grey says flatly.
The door opens and Officials storm in. Hands grab my arms securing me in place as Grey and Sienna are dragged backwards. I'm shouting, struggling to free myself. I'm not ready for Grey to be taken away again. Grey is shouting something but I can't hear it over Sienna's screams.
I bite the arm of one of the Officials holding me and lash out with me feet. A fist punches me in the stomach and a low pitched groan passes my lips as I sink to the floor, unable to breathe or move as the shock and agony paralyses me.
"She's pregnant you monster," Sienna screams as they pull her from the room.
Through blurred watery eyes, I glance up at Grey who has gone stiff as he's pulled out of sight. The Officials holding me slam me into the corner. I hear Sienna's screams echo along the corridor until the door slams shut. A heavy chest crushing silence surrounds me as I curl into a ball.
