Interviews with the Director and Cast of Expiration Date
Lizz Adams "Iris"
What was it like to bring Iris/Erik to life? It was a blast! This was such a dream role and dream cast and crew, everyone was so kind and funny, I never wanted filming to end!
What about your character did you love to act out the most? Iris is so tough, yet she still has this really human and dry sense of humor and it was really awesome to embody such a complex character.
What was the most challenging part of filming for you? Stunts! It was also one of my favorite parts of filming, and it challenged me to work on a new skill and to really become a fighter.
What are you most excited for viewers to see? Honestly just very excited for everyone to see the world we've built and the great dynamic between Erik and Iris. I ship it!
What do you want readers of Expiration Date to know? That we really love and respect the world and are trying our best to do it justice!
Do you prefer brownies or blondies? Brownies?
What song is your phone playing right now? "BTS feat. Halsey - Boy With Luv haha kpop forever!
If you could star in any movie/tv show that has already been made, what would it be and what role would you play? Oh what a great question! I remember when the Lord of the Rings movies came out I was so sad that world was not real- I would have loved to play someone like Arwen or Galadriel, they're both so feminine and strong and really embodied strength and grace.
What would six-year-old you say your dream job is? Honestly? An actress! It's always been my dream!
Kristen Brancaccio—The Director
What drew you to Expiration Date's story? I'm a huge fan of dystopian science fiction and I love the action/thriller genre, so Expiration Date was the perfect book for me to adapt to series.
What was your favorite part about bringing Expiration Date to life? Favorite part of filming?I really enjoyed collaborating with my wildly talented cast and crew to create this exciting and dangerous world! I especially love filming action scenes. James, my fight choreographer, and I have worked together for many years and it was fun to put together the gritty fight scene you see in the pilot.
What led you to film as an outlet for your storytelling? As a kid, I wanted to write novels. Unfortunately, Wattpad didn't exist when I was in middle or high school, so all of my books and stories were saved as word docs and never saw the light of day! When YouTube emerged, I started writing webseries instead of novels, because then I could film my stories and share them with the world. My first webseries was called The Literary Trio, and it was about Hermione, Katniss and Bella Swan being roommates. So I guess you could say I got my start in filmmaking by making fan films!
As a female director, what part of Expiration Date is the most important to you? I want to make sure Iris is a character who is 3-dimensional. She's tough and a total badass, but she's also incredibly intuitive and quick-on-her-feet. My favorite moment is when she unexpectedly emerges from the bathroom in a towel and totally diffuses the situation with Colton.
What about the pilot do you hope most resonates with viewers? What do you want them to take away? I hope viewers are left wanting more! I want more, too!
What is the craziest thing you've done for a shot while filming? Gone out in the desert with just a few people, a camera and a script we'd only really developed the day before. That's how we made DAY ONE, a short film I co-directed that ended up on HBO's Project Greenlight!
What song is your phone playing right now?"Directions" by Nahko
Pineapple on pizza? Not for me personally, but I'm not a hater. I won't judge you if that's how you roll.
Jayden Taylor "Erik"
What was it like to bring Erik to life? Bringing Erik to life on screen was such a blast! I was incredibly motivated to do him justice. And I think I did that! He is such an interesting character with lots of different layers, but overall a guy with a really good heart, despite being surrounded by so many bad people. And even so, he's still a bad@ss and ready to fight for what he believes in and loves.
What about your character did you love to act out the most? I think my favorite part of Erik to act out was that inner rebel. He pretty much has everything he could ever want (money, power, fame) but none of it really matters to him. He wants more than just riches and power. He's a rebel with a cause. I really loved bringing that humanity to him and showing that your family does not determine the type of person you become AND that love can really bring out the best in people.
What was the most challenging part of filming for you? Really, none of the filming process felt very difficult. We had such an amazing cast and crew on set that everything seemed to flow smoothly. It really was one of the most cohesive projects I have had the pleasure to be a part of. It made every day of filming so incredibly fun, and it never even really felt like work. Kristen made us feel very free to make choices and explore the character, so when the camera was rolling, things flowed really naturally.
What are you most excited for viewers to see? I think I am most excited for viewers to see the relationship between Erik and Iris. Working with Lizz couldn't have been a better experience and we clicked right from the get go. Our instant connection definitely showed on screen and you can really tell how much we got along. I think viewers will really enjoy seeing that relationship build!
What do you want readers of Expiration Date to know? As much as we'd all love films and shows that follow the exact story we fell in love with, that usually not how it is. I want readers of Expiration Date to know that this filmed version stays true to the essence and story you all adore, with new, creative, and exciting additions that help bring it to life on the screen. I think anyone who enjoyed the book, will really enjoy this show.
Do you prefer brownies or blondies? (This is something from the book that readers debate in the comments)Oooo this is a tough one...hmm. I'd probably have to say blondies! I'm one of the few crazy people on this planet that isn't totally in love with chocolate, so I'd want to go for the blondie!
What song is your phone playing right now? Kusangi - Odesza
If you could star in any movie/tv show that has already been made, what would it be and what role would you play? This one is easy! I would play Cedric Diggory in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire. I'm quite possibly one of the biggest Harry Potter fans alive, and it was always a dream to be a part of the wizarding world
What would six-year-old you say your dream job is? Little six-year-old Jayden would say his dream job was to be a builder/architect (not sure I knew what an architect was yet though). I was really obsessed with Legos and building little castles and villages from random stuff I could find around.
