Chapter Nine
"Oh..." Ichimatsu mumbled, nearly giving Todomatsu a heart attack, both having thought they were alone. "It's just you..."
"I-I..." Todomatsu mumbled, feeling as if he had only been dozing for a few seconds.
The air was freezing cold, both brothers able to see their breath as they breathed. Several hours had passed, for now, the moon was the only object left to illuminate the lonely, night sky. The laughter of the distressed, mourning sun was long past.
Ichimatsu, despite being cold, kept his distance from the sixth son. Both would appreciate this, anyways.
"So," Ichimatsu sighed, his half-lidded eyes shifting over to look directly at Todomatsu.
Todomatsu, though he could feel his brother's emotionless eyes, piercing into him, kept his gaze fixed on the moon.
"Kinkai...loved the...moon.." Todomatsu mouthed, in complete awe over the beautiful object, hanging in the empty, world above.
"I can't understand you..." Ichimatsu let out an irritated sigh. "But nobody understands my motives either...so I think we're the same..."
Todomatsu laughed slightly, though his voice sounded ill and scratchy. His eyes were filled with an indescribable amount of sadness, yet he smiled for Ichimatsu.
"Kinkai always smiled, even though she had some things rough," Todomatsu reminded himself, painfully. "So why is it so hard for me to smile...? Am I really that weak..."
"Karamatsu told me what you did." Ichimatsu stated, his tone of voice not changing at all. One would have expected it to, but the fourth son was always like a book written in a foreign language, and an ancient language at that. It would take a great deal of work to understand what he meant or felt at all.
"O-Oh..." Todomatsu mumbled, turning his gaze to the ground below the two. It didn't seem very far away at all, though his hallucination told him that it could kill him.
"I just can't believe it..." Ichimatsu muttered. "You're such an idiot..."
"I-I'm sorry, Ichimatsu, I-" Todomatsu looked up, his mouth hanging open in disbelief.
Head hanging low, Ichimatsu clenched his teeth, as he sniffed very quietly, abruptly wiping away tears from his eyes with his fists. Though he tried to hide his sadness, the moon acted as a spotlight during those moments, illuminating Ichimatsu's face.
"Why are you even here?" Ichimatsu's voice shook. "The more you stick around, the more everyone worries! When you're gone, everyone worries! It's like you're just..."
"I don't want to be here anymore though, so you don't have to worry!" Todomatsu raised his voice a little out of fear, chuckling uneasily. He didn't like seeing Ichimatsu cry. The fourth son rarely cried, and if he did, it was for a good reason. Todomatsu never considered himself a 'good reason' to cry over.
"You treat life...like it's something you can just get back in a flash," Ichimatsu growled. "How come...you can't grasp the fact, that this is your only life, and that your time is limited?!"
"Kinkai...is all that.." Todomatsu's voice trailed off, knowing he shouldn't speak anymore. His brothers had never approved of the loud girl. Not one bit. Even their parents didn't like each other.
"Kinkai is dead," Ichimatsu hissed, but his disturbed facial expression suddenly melted when he saw Todomatsu reach for the area on his hoodie where his heart was.
"It's still beating," Todomatsu whimpered, smiling sadly. "Her heart is still beating though...Kinkai...she can't be dead if her heart is still beating...right..?"
Tears welled up in Todomatsu's eyes as he tried to fight back the memories. He bit his lip, trying his very hardest to not break again. He'd been too fragile lately. Far too fragile.
"You're an experiment for us, since you have a more feminine body," Todomatsu's heart surgeon's voice echoed through his broken up thoughts.
"I'm an organ donor!" Kinkai had once laughed, only minutes before being hit by a car on her way home.
"This heart belonged to a strong girl, once, by the name of Kinkai..." Todomatsu's heart surgeon's voice grew louder inside the man's mind. "There's a possibility you won't last a year by us doing such."
A single tear ran down Todomatsu's cheek, splashing onto his hand closest to Ichimatsu.
"I love you, Todomatsu!" Kinkai had once laughed jokingly. "You're my best friend after all! I'd risk my life to save yours! I love seeing you smile!"
"Todomatsu..." Ichimatsu mumbled, giving his little brother a quick tug on the arm of his hoodie. "It's late, we should be in bed."
Todomatsu's eyes were fixated on the moon, once again, tears running down his ice cold cheeks, his mouth opened ever so slightly.
"I never..." Todomatsu's hands were tense, gripping his hoodie tightly as he struggled to speak. "I really am an idiot..."
Ichimatsu blinked his eyes a little, not knowing how to react to his little brother. Karamatsu had warned him that Todomatsu was getting worse, but Ichimatsu didn't know he was already this bad off.
"We've already lost you, haven't we..." Ichimatsu muttered under his breath as he stood up, motioning for Todomatsu to follow him inside.
