Rajveer

"Hello, mum." I said immediately received her call. What was wrong now?

"Where are you son?" She asked, angrily. By her tone alone, I could tell there was a problem.

"I...am at—" I didn't get to finish my statement because I was interrupted by her. She had a habit of doing that whenever she was mad.

"Come back home, I have something to discuss with you." she stated. I hoped Roshni had not complained about me, because if she did,  I knew mum would be very disappointed at me and it might affect her health.

"But mum..." I trailed off "I am busy right now. Is there a problem?" I asked. I hoped not because I couldn't deal with an angry mum.

"Just come home and see me first." she said and hung up before I could comprehend.

When I got home, I went straight to mum's room. I met her seated on her bed patiently waiting for me.

"Where were you?" She asked without looking up at me. She was mad, I could tell.

"I was at work." I lied. I knew better than to tell her the truth.

"But that was not what your wife told me." she gazed at me. I was right all along, she reported me to mum.

"What did she tell you?" I dared to ask. If Roshni did tell her, I didn't know what I would do to her.

"She told me you went to see your friend." she replied. So she did not tell mum after all. Good girl! I honestly thought she would disclose everything to mum. I was glad she didn't.

"That's also true. I went to see my friend first, then I went to work." thumbs up to you, you did a great job in rectifying your mistake – I mentally patted myself on the back.

"You were given a week to spend your time fully with your wife, weren't you?" She asked.

"I was, but I just missed working and decided to see how things are going in my absence." I smiled. I hoped she bought my lie.

"How about your wife?" She asked.

I don't care about her, she can leave this house for all I care. "What happened to her?" I pretended to be concerned.

"I didn't say anything was wrong with her. Is it right for you to leave her all alone at home?" She asked, sternly.

"When I left, she wasn't alone. Sam was home."

"I know, but as a newly wedded bride, the husband is suppose to keep her company and never leave her in boredom. She just came into this house, it is your job to make her feel at home here." she lectured. I didn't give any reply to what she said, because I was angry. She called me back only to ask why I left Roshni all alone at home.  If I could, I would leave her forever. I was just doing all these for her sake,  but she didn't even understand me. I was having a hard time, I got married to her even though I didn't want to, for her sake.

"It won't happen again." I sighed.

"You should apologize to your wife for leaving her alone in the room." mum advised. I was definitely not going to do that.

"I will." I said tersely only so she could allow me leave.

"And...I want you to take her out today." She suggested.

Mom!

"But mom —"

"Please do this for me Raj. I want you to take her out to a nice place, spend time with her and get to know her better." she said. I did not want to take her out, spend time with her and let alone get to know her better. The saying 'looks deceives."  Is indeed true. She may look innocent on the outside, but she was sly.

"Okay." I agreed, reluctantly and left the room in a hurry.

Roshni was seated on the couch reading a novel. I wanted to vent out all of my frustrations on her but I didn't because I knew she wasn't at fault this time. She didn't ask mum to tell me to take her out...or did she?

"Get ready, we are going out." I announced without sparing her a glance. I walked pass her and sat down on the bed. She looked shocked at what I said. She couldn't believe I was taking out and maybe she thought I was finally giving our marriage a chance, because I saw her smile a little when I told her we were going out. She must be under a misconception. I would never give the marriage a chance to bloom because I knew in the end, it still wouldn't work.

"Where are we going to?" She asked.

"This wasn't my idea, okay? Mum asked me to take you out, so you shouldn't misunderstand." I replied rudely. I didn't want her thinking otherwise.

Wordlessly, she walked into the closet and emerged few minutes later. "Let's go."

"Okay."

On getting downstairs, we saw mum in the living room.  I guessed to ensure I take her out for real.

"Drive safely dear." she smiled. "And take very good care of my daughter in law."

"I will mum." I said and took Roshni's hand in mine "where do you want us to go baby?" I asked and brought her hand to my lips. I could hear her gasp a little. I smirked at that.

"Any....Anywhere." she stuttered. We bade mum goodbye and went towards my car. I opened the door for her as mim was looking at us. She got in and I gave life to the engine and drove out of the compound. I had no idea myself of where we were going, I just kept on driving to God knows where. The car was awkwardly silent, except for the sounds from cars passing by and honking. Neither Roshni nor I said a word. We continued like that for a few minutes before she broke the silence.

"Where are you taking me to?" She asked.

To your houseI so wanted to tell her that, but composed myself "I don't know." I answered, truthfully. I decided to just drive around and go home in the evening. Great idea!

"I asked your mom for permission to continue my studies, now that I am married." she suddenly said. Why was she even telling me all these? I knew mum would never allow her to continue.

"And?" I asked.

"She agreed." she said. She agreed?

"She agreed?" I asked surprised and she nodded. I honestly thought mum would never allow her to continue because she didn't  like it when married women associate with other men. Roshni was her daughter in law and yet she agreed?

"Yes, but she gave me conditions, she told me to always come home early from school and not to associate myself with boys at school." she explained. I just knew it, she wouldn't have agreed without conditions.

"I don't care if you associate yourself with boys, you can have as many boyfriend as you wish." Immediately I said that, I regretted it and wished I could take it back. I shouldn't have said that. A frown instantly marred her brows. Her anger was justified, but I had to tell her the truth, I didn't care if she cheat on me because I didn't even consider us married in the first place.

"I am not irresponsible, you may not consider me your wife, but I still am and it would be highly inappropriate to get into any kind of indecent relationship with anyone else. I am not like that." she said, angrily. The anger was visible in her eyes.

"Whatever." I rolled my eyes and concentrated more on driving.

"Could you please pull over? I want to get something to eat at the cafeteria over there." she pointed at a cafeteria by the road side.

I pulled over and she got out from the car to get some snacks. I waited for her for over thirty minutes before she finally showed up, but she wasn't alone, she was with a man. "Who is he? And what is he doing with my wife?"
