Chapter Twenty Two: Believe
Killian's POV
~ A few hours later ~
After a long, excruciating 2 hour wait, I caught a glimpse of surgeons in the corner of my eyes pushing a bed. I looked up and discovered that it was Emma as they opened the door and pushed her into the room. I stood up and rushed to a free place beside her as doctors were busy setting up monitors again. Just before they left, I tapped one of their arms.
"I know you're the wrong person to be asking, but is there anyway you could find something out about our son?"
"I shouldn't be, but I'll try."
"Thank you so much."
"Emma should be waking up soon. I'll be back shortly."
I nodded and returned to Emma's side as I didn't want to miss her waking up. I wanted to be here for her.
I tried to pass time by phoning Lily, again, to find out if the kids settled down to sleep for her. Fortunately they did and she told me that Sophie was missing me and Emma. It broke my heart missing the last hours of Christmas with them but of course Emma couldn't stay at home. We just had to overcome this and go home to our family.
.........
~ A week later ~
"How are you feeling?"
"Okay, in pain, but okay."
After an eventful week, I was finally able to sit down with my love and talk to her without being interrupted.
Thankfully, Emma survived the ordeal from last week and has been in recovery trying to, well recover. The doctors told us she would have to stay in for a while because they didn't want her to rip her stitches or for her to get any infections.
We still haven't met our son. Emma hasn't been able to leave the room and I didn't want to go without her. We've been given the cutest polaroids of him, but it just doesn't feel real. We don't have a name for him yet either because, as with Sophie, we didn't want to name him until we met him and decided what kind of person he would be. It was frustrating for Emma because after all she went through all the pain and all she wanted to do now was see him.
Sophie, Henry and Liam visited a few days ago and have since been at home with Lily and my Aunt Liz. Me and Emma hate not being with them everyday because something was always happening and they were always being left with someone to look after them.
"Lily called earlier, she wanted to know if you wanted to see the kids?"
"I'd rather not."
"What?"
"I'm not in the mood Killian."
"Emma, I know you're overwhelmed and a little down in the dumps, but the kids miss us and they want to spend time-"
"Please Killian I don't want any visitors today."
I was in shock. This definitely wasn't the way Emma would act when offered a chance to see the kids. She would usually jump at the opportunity and get so excited. The hospital was taking its toll and enough had become enough. I've got to admit, staring at the same four walls all day is extremely boring, but at least I could leave the room and walk around. Emma couldn't do any of that for at least another week, which just seemed unbearable.
A short while later, a nurse popped into the room to check Emma's vitals and change the dressing on her incision. But not long after, a doctor from nicu entered to give us a daily update, which was requested by Emma a few days ago.
"Good morning! Sorry to keep you waiting."
She had a huge smile on her face as she opened her chart and lifted another Polaroid to give us. Emma's spirits were immediately lifted as she gazed at the picture of our infant son.
"Has he gotten bigger? Is he doing alright?"
"Well, I was hoping you'd like to see for yourself."
"Wha-what?"
"I chatted to your midwife and doctors and they agreed that we can escort you to the nicu in a wheelchair to see your son."
The door opened and a nurse came in with a wheelchair. Emma was so delighted and was almost crying she was so happy. We quickly, but carefully helped her into the wheelchair before being left alone to make our own way to the nicu. But, just as we reached the doors, Emma touched my hand.
"Stop."
"You alright love?"
"Yeah, it's just, this is really happening now. For real. And I'm nervous."
"Don't be!"
"But all the machines and the incubator..."
"It's all helping him, now come on! Let's see our son."
I opened the door and then pushed the chair into the ward where there was lots of separate rooms with windows. I tried to read them all and find 'Jones' written somewhere but it was hard to tell due to the amount of rooms there actually was.
"Hello, do you guys need any help?"
We were startled and found a nicu nurse standing behind us.
"Yes actually, it's our first time seeing our son and we weren't told his room number?"
"I see, what's your sons name?"
"He doesn't have one yet, but his surname is Jones."
"Jones, Jones.... ahh yes Jones! Follow me, it's just the last room in the ward."
I heard Emma breathe a sigh of relief as I pushed her down the corridor to the very bottom. The nicu nurse opened a door and guided us inside.
There were no lights on, except a bright blue light shining over the incubator. The beeping sounds of machines instantly filled our ears as we stood at the door.
"I'll give you both some time."
"Thank you."
The nurse left and I slowly pushed Emma right up the the incubator. Tears filled both our eyes as for the first time ever, we came gave to face with our newborn.
I could hear Emma sniffles as she wiped some tears from her eyes using her hand. I pulled a tissue from my pocket and gave but to her and I kneeled down beside her to give her a hug.
"For almost being a week late, he's definitely tiny."
"He's beautiful."
"Just like his mother."
"And his father."
"I'm so proud of you Emma."
As we sat and stared at our son, I couldn't help but smile. Everything was okay now, and the worse had passed.
Me and Emma were allowed to put one hand into the incubator and just hold his tiny hand for comfort. I had never cried so much in 20 minutes than I did then.
After a short while we had to leave, but we were told that hopefully we could visit later. We returned back to Emma's room with smiles hitting both ears. After that visit we were more determined than ever to get home, with our son.
...........
We had been back in Emma's room for a few hours and I had left to go get Emma some proper food because having hospital food for over a week was the most disgusting thing I had ever done. When I returned, Emma was asleep as it was the best way for her to pass time. I quietly took off my jacket and placed it on my knee as I sat at the end of the bed and gazed at Emma sleeping.
I was soon startled by the door opening and I saw the nicu nurse we had met earlier come into our room.
"Oh hey, is everything alright?"
"It's more than alright! After you and Emma left we did all the tests we took a week ago after the birth and they came back all clear! Your son still has an infection that's in one of his kidneys but it may clear up soon and it isn't life threatening. It can be treated by some medication. But we've agreed that he can come and stay with you guys now."
"Really?!"
"Yes, in fact someone from nicu is bringing him round now! You may want to wake up Emma and tell her the good news."
"Thank you so much."
The nurse left the room and I quickly but gently rushed up beside Emma and tapped her shoulder to try and wake her. She slowly started waking up, a little confused by why she was all of a sudden woken up.
"Emma, I've got some amazing news."
"What is it? Did Sophie finally learn how to go potty because that would be handy."
"No it's not that."
"I know it's too early still but a mother can dream right? I mean...."
"Emma! It's not about Sophie!"
"It's not?"
"No!"
"Then who?"
And just at that moment the door opened and in came our son in a hospital cot being pushed by a nurse. Emma sat straight up, ignoring the fact that she should have been taking it easy. She looked at me straight in the eyes and all I had to do was nod and she knew exactly what was happening.
"Is he?"
"He can go home once you can."
The nurse kindly lifted him from his cot and placed him into Emma's arms. I heard Emma's sniffles and little laughs to herself as she was again in awe. She was shocked that she could finally hold our tiny son and call him her own.
"Would you look at that. He's okay Swan."
"Yeah.. yeah he is."
I sat beside her on the bed and snuggled up to them. We couldn't stop staring at our wriggling newborn, it felt exactly like he was always with us.
"So... what about names?"
"Names?"
"You know, I think he deserves a name."
"Ohhhhhhh. Yes of course."
"Well he was born on Christmas Day... what about Jesus?"
"Killian! We are not naming our son Jesus!"
"What about Santa?"
"No!"
"I'm kidding love I wouldn't name our son Santa."
"Well don't blame me for believing you would."
"What's that supposed to mean?!"
"Nothing!"
"Well, I took a picture of the blackboard that we wrote some names on in the nursery, and it turns out there is only two left that we didn't rub out."
"Well, what were they? The baby brain has stricken and I feel so stupid that I don't remember."
"It looks like Matthew or Charles."
"Hmmmm. That's tricky."
"I'll leave it up to you love."
"Seriously! One of the biggest decisions we could make and you leave it to Miss baby brain?!"
"Well, after all the years we've known each other, all your decisions have been the best ones."
I saw her beginning to think hard and she looked down are our son, really trying to think what name she should pick.
"Matthew..."
"Matthew."
"Matthew Alex Jones."
I felt knives go through my heart as she recommended Alex as the middle name. Having another son meant the world to her, but this wasn't our first son together. Alex is still a person to us and he is our first son. We may not have met him but he still appeared on this earth.
"I..I."
"If Alex us too much we can think of something else? I totally understand."
"No! I love it, I absolutely love it."
A smile crept onto Emma's face as she kissed Matthew's head and handed him over to me for the first time. I was completely overjoyed at the sight of my son, Matthew. It was perfect. He was perfect.
...........
Emma's POV
After meeting Matthew and holding him for the first time, my pain seemed to have vanished as having him around made everything better. I was able to change him into his first proper outfit and nurse him for the first time too. It wasn't too long ago that I was getting ready to bring Sophie home and now I had another one just less than two years later.
Killian had been rocking Matthew around the room in his arms for the past hour, humming and singing parts of some songs and nursery rhymes. It really helped that Matthew wasn't as much of a needy baby because I was still in recovery and in a heck lot of pain.
Just before late, Killian finally sat down beside me and let me hold Matthew again as he drifted off to sleep.
"Emma, it's 11:58pm."
"I know it's getting so late, maybe we both deserve some shut eye-"
"Don't you know what day it is?"
"I haven't really been keeping track."
"It's New Year's Eve."
"It is?!"
"11:59pm."
"But the boys and Sophie aren't here!"
"Lily has reassured me that they understand that we need to be at the hospital and they will be here in the morning."
"Okay. Thank you."
"In 5, 4, 3 , 2 , 1...."
They clock hit 12 and Killian leaned in for a long kiss like we would on normal New Years celebrations.
"Happy New Year Emma."
"Happy New Year Killian."
I felt a little kick as Matthew started wiggling again and kicking his legs, trying to catch our attention. Me and Killian laughed and kissed his little forehead.
"Happy New Year to you too little man."
It was perfect. All I could've ever asked for I finally had. I believe that nothing could make me upset now. After everything me and my family had been through, we stuck together and got stronger. And all we had to do was believe that everything would get better, and it did. Unexpectedly.
