Chapter Twenty One: Silence
Killian's POV
Emma was admitted into the emergency maternity ward when we arrived at the hospital. She were supposed to deliver at the birth centre but Emma had lost too much blood and was spiking a fever. The best place for her and our baby right now was the hospital. Our midwife was on her way and so was Emma's gynaecologist. She felt so upset that she was pulling them away from their families on Christmas but I tried telling her that she could die if she wasn't in the right hands, which made something click in her head.
The doctors quickly checked her over and got a few specialists in to do some test to find out why Emma was still bleeding. They did tell us that her waters were definitely broken and she had gone into active labour, but the bleeding was a problem.
After about 30 minutes, Dr.Lucas arrived with Emma's files and immediately asked for a ultrasound. She hadn't even been at the hospital for 20 minutes and she was already doing everything she could for Emma.
Once the ultrasound was completed, Dr. Lucas looked at the photographs from the scan and told us that since Emma last scan, two more cysts had appeared and the same two had just ruptured, causing bleeding in her uterus and releasing some fluid as well, which was extremely dangerous for both Emma and our son.
"Miss Swan, we need to make a decision. We need to decide what is best, a emergency cesarean or a heavily medicated v back?"
Emma could hardly talk she was in so much pain. She still had the oxygen mask on and was on an IV of morphine. I didn't want to answer for her because it was her that was going to have to deal with the after birth and the pain. She slowly pulled her oxygen mask off her face and decided to just to a medicated v back. I though that she was genuinely crazy, the amount of pain she would be in, but it was her decision and I had to respect it.
After an hour and a half of being admitted, the morphine started to kick in and Emma was feeling less pain. She didn't need the oxygen mask as much and just got a cannula instead. The bleeding wasn't as heavy and she wasn't feeling as nauseous.
"Are you sure you don't want to reconsider the c-section Emma?"
"No...no I just want to deliver."
"But your life is on the line Emma."
"Please, just let me do this."
"As you wish."
I grabbed onto her hand and kissed it as she slowly tried to fall asleep. I could see she was struggling to do I closed all the curtains in the room and opened the window slightly because she had always liked sleeping with a small draft in the room. After a crazy few hours, she closed over her eyes and fell straight asleep.
........
It was 9pm, and things had started heating up again. When Emma woke, the morphine had worn off and she was in immense pain. She got her epidural and then midwives told her she needed to start pushing soon or the baby could go into distress.
"Killian, I don't know If I can do this."
"Don't say that Emma. You're strong and you can do this."
"I just want him to be okay, I want our son to be okay."
"Shhh it's okay please don't worry love."
At this point Emma had lost so much blood that she was going pale, out of breath and doctors were starting her on a transfusion once they found a blood match. I could tell that the v back was a bad idea before she even chose to do it, but now it was terrifying. I just had to keep a straight face and not get to emotional around Emma, cause it would 100% make her feel worse.
"Emma, we're going to have to get you to start pushing soon before it gets too dangerous for you and the baby."
Emma slightly nodded and tried to keep her breath. A nurse gave her back the cannula and upped her dose of painkillers. But nothing was helping, she was scared, tired and wanted it to be over and have our son safely in her arms.
Soon Emma had done two pushes and was told to stop after midwife called a doctor over and whispered something into his ear.
"What's- whats wrong? Killian?"
"I don't know love, but I'm going to find out."
I stood up from Emma's side but didn't let go of her hand and stepped closer to the midwife.
"Uh, is everything okay?"
"No, i can see your baby's head and I can tell that the umbilical cord is wrapped around his neck. I called the nicu to bring an incubator."
"An incubator?!"
"Your son can't breath, his wind pipe is getting crushed. So we need Emma to deliver as soon as possible for both their benefit."
I was shocked. I sat back down beside Emma as she slowly tired to form her words to ask me what was wrong. I couldn't lie to her, not now.
"Emma, the baby, his umbilical cord is wrapped around his neck, he could die."
"No, no. I need- I need him to be okay."
"He will be, you just need to put your everything into this Emma, don't look back. It has to happen now."
She started shaking with fear. It was all becoming a bit much for us both and we both wanted it to be over.
"Okay Emma, we need you to start pushing again, you can do it."
Emma started taking deep breaths again and pushed one more time.
"Well done, just one more push and it will be over."
"I- I can't."
"Come on love, it's all going to be over soon. Just one more push."
I rubbed her palms before she squeezed my hand again and pushed one last time. She melted back into the bed and sighed. I saw the midwife fussing before lifting our son and handing him to nurse from nicu.
"Killi-Killian. What's wrong? Is-is he okay?"
"Excuse me? Is our son okay?"
We were ignored by the staff and they continued doing whatever they were doing. Emma was too weak to panic so I tried to calm her down until the midwife came over.
"Right, so your son's throat has been badly damaged and it's clear that he has an infection. We need to send him straight to nicu."
"Can-can I not hold him?"
"I'm afraid not, we need to get you cleaned up so we can get you started on some stronger pain medication and start some tests."
Emma flopped back onto the bed and tears began to form in her eyes. All she wanted was to hold our son and now he's been taken away before he even saw him.
Without any warning, Emma started getting strong pains in her stomach again. No one realised until it her blood pressure dropped and a little alarm went off on the vitals machine. A nurse checked her over before calling in Dr.Lucas again. She wanted to another scan and while she was doing so I decided to go get a coffee to give Emma a little space. But when I came back all hell had broke loose.
Emma looked passed out on the bed, nurses were fussing around her and doing things I didn't really take notice of. All I was worried about was Emma as I ran to her side and took her hand.
"What happened? Emma are you alright?"
"We need to get her to surgery. The fluid from her cysts have gotten into her blood and is shutting down some of her organs. We need to go, now."
"Killia-Killian. Tell the kids I'm sorry, and make sure our son knows I love him."
"No, no Emma! You're gonna be okay."
"-Tell them all I'm sorry."
"Emma stop you're going to be fine."
"-I'm sorry to you too."
"Stop Emma."
"You know what-what's going to happen."
"Please Emma you can't leave me, we have a future, we have so much to do. I can't do any of this without you."
"I'm sorry."
Her eyes slowly fluttered over and she was rushed out of the room and into the operating room. I leaned against the wall and let the tears roll out. That could be it, I could never see her again. All of it, gone. And I never got to tell her I loved her before she left.
I tried to take my mind off things by going to the midwife to see if I could see my son. But the nicu was so isolated that I couldn't even go into the ward. I took this time to phone Lily and tell her the news. After a short phone call I returned back to the room Emma delivered in and sat down to wait the anxious wait to find out if she survives.
