[Luhan] A Gift
You stared at the empty Christmas tree at the corner of the living room while fiddling with the two gifts in your hand. You’ve been staring at it for the past minutes, but anyway, what else could you do? It was your only company for this night after all.
There’s a house and a Christmas tree, but no gifts and no family. *Sigh*. Such a lonely creature you are. But even though Mum and Dad wouldn’t be able to come home tonight to open your presents, maybe you should at least try to make the night livelier. You’ll only look like a certified emo if you stay lying on the couch the whole Christmas Eve.
Yeah, maybe you should go out for a while.
Shrugging, you ran to your room to grab a sweater and your purse. You put on your boots and prepared to head out to the cold city.
“Ah, cold,” you breathed as a cold air shocked you. God, it’s not even snowing yet. You clutched on your scarf and made sure it’s secure around your neck, and started shuffling towards the main street.
“Heading out?” You heard someone yell, and squinted at one of the houses. The fog made it quite difficult to see, so suppose it was just a neighbor.
“Yeah. Just gonna walk around.”
“Be careful!”
“Thanks,” you yelled back. Gee, what nice neighbors you have. Too bad you’re not much of a sociable person and tends to lock herself in the house for the entire week. Anyway, after a while of walking, you finally reached the very colorful and lively center of the city, where you could see a lot of families and couples walking around, holding hands. Suddenly feeling self-conscious, you shoved your hands in your pockets and bowed to cover your face with your hair. Well, it’s not like everyone will stare at you because you’re alone but, whatever. It’s just you and your awkwardness.
You walked past the many shopping districts. None of them really interested you. Clothes? Nope. Hats? Nope. Lingerie? Um, absolutely nope. Gifts? Well... ok. Since no one would be giving you tonight anyway (Santa doesn’t give gifts to non-children, ugh), maybe you should just buy one for yourself.
Yeap, you totally deserve it.
You stepped into the store, immediately feeling the warmth contrast to the weather outside. There were a lot of people looking around the store, and you had to dodge a few kids running here and there. You took your time looking around as you tried to decide what you want. Which was srsly difficult because when your parents asked you what gift you wanted for Christmas, you just said, “Meh, just surprise me.”
And wow, boy you were really surprised. You got a non-existent gift, and here you are buying gift for yourself.
“Snow globe?” You mumbled to yourself as you held up the cute item. You’ve never had a snow globe ever in your life, but that’s kind of weird to own one now, right? Shrugging, you put it back down. Maybe you don’t need gifts anyway. Sighing, you headed towards the exit, but then something caught the corner of your eye. You back-tracked, and slowly looked at a small bracelet in display. It looked like it was made of simple nylon strings, but the steel strip at the center seemed to make it special. You squinted to see what was carved in it, but it's just so tiny and damn your eyes must have low resolution today. Must be the mist or something.
Anyway, you felt this tug on your heart, indicating that your soul wants to have this. Smiling, you picked up the glass box and approached the counter.
“That would be ##### won, miss.” The cashier said, and you opened your purse. Your eyes almost popped out of their sockets. You forgot your money. You freakin forgot your money. Oh my god this is so— Oh my God.
“I... I think I forgot my wallet...”
The cashier’s eyebrow rose. “Well gurl I ain’t no Santa. You have to pay for that.”
Hesitantly, you backed away from the item, feeling your heart slowly crumbling to pieces. A hand suddenly handed out money to the cashier.
“I’ll take that please,” you looked up to see this baby faced pink-haired man with glasses. You had a moment of imaginary choir singing in the background as you marveled at the beauty of this creature. When he turned his head to look at you, you snapped out of your trance and averted your eyes back to the bracelet. Your heart crumbled once again.
“Thanks,” the man mumbled to the cashier, and picked up the box. Nooo! That’s mine!!! Don’t take it awaaay!!!!
“Here,” he suddenly turned to face you and handed out the glass box with a smile. You blinked a few times, unable to comprehend the situation.
“Why...?”
“Consider it as a gift,” he laughed delightedly. “It’s Christmas anyway. And you seemed to like it so much.”
“W-well... Thank you, I guess...” you hesitantly took it from him, still weirded out by his overflowing kindness. “I have to repay you in some way, right? Um, do you need help with anything? Bags? Or something?”
“Knowing your name could be nice.” He smiled brightly, almost blinding your eyes with his handsomeness. If he tells you he’s actually an angel you wouldn’t doubt it one bit.
“I’m Yoo ____, annyeonghaseyo.” You bowed 90 degrees.
“I’m Luhan,” he beamed and reached out to shake your hand. You couldn’t take your eyes off his face. You wanted to pinch yourself know if you’re just dreaming. But of course that would look weird, so you just stared at the box in your hands.
“Oh, let me help you with that.” He suddenly stepped closer and reached out to open the box. You froze, not only because he was extremely close, but also because he was basically touching your freakin hand.
“Oh no, wait,” Luhan suddenly froze in the middle of untying the bracelet from the box. “Are you going to give this to somebody?”
You felt your face turn red. Should you tell him? “N-no... I bought it for myself...”
No wait, you didn’t buy it, so technically... this Luhan bought it for you. “Wait, I mean, you bought it so you kind of bought it for me!”
Then you mentally smacked yourself. You basically blabbered right in front of him. Real smooth, gurl. Real smooth.
“Oh that’s great, then.” He laughed, eyes sparkling brighter than the Christmas lights. He grabbed your free hand and carefully tied the bracelet around your wrist. Then he brushed a thumb over the metal strip, as if to admire his work. You squinted your eyes again to see what the carving was.
“It says ‘We are one.’” Luhan smiled, making you blush again. You must have looked silly squinting your eyes like that, so now he’s laughing.
“We?” Your head tilted to the side. That’s weird. Who is “we?” You looked up to see Luhan lifting the sleeve of his sweater. He had the same bracelet as you. When he looked up, he had this mischievous smile on his face.
“I think it’s supposed to be a couple bracelet.” He laughed. “I only realized that when I saw you holding a similar box. Weird thing is, this was a gift to me.”
Both of you held up your wrists as if to check if they really were similar. They really were. Giggling kids suddenly approached from behind you, and one of them accidentally bumped against your butt. You lost your balance and ended up ramming your face against Luhan’s chest.
There was a moment of silence as you tried to comprehend what just happened. You could feel his steady heartbeat. Clearing your throat, you quickly stood upright and brushed off imaginary dust. You looked up through your lashes, and saw Luhan slightly blushing as well.
Then he laughed. Feeling more embarrassed than ever, you just decided to join with the laughter. After a while, the two of you went out of the store, and was greeted by the colorful lights in the street. Luhan sighed and looked at you.
“I think this couple-bracelet incident is quite weird, but I think it’s a good weird.”
“Yeah, I think so too.” You laughed. He seemed like a really good guy, anyway.
“You’re not allowed to take that off, okay? Remember, it’s a gift.” He gave a serious stare, and you played along by nodding sternly.
“Never take it off, I promise.” You held up your pinky, and he automatically hooked it.
“Promise.”
Well, seems like your Christmas Eve won’t be so lonely after all.
