“I’m sorry to have to do this Zack, but if you’re going to be our mind we can’t let you be susceptible to the contagion. Having your mind erased as ours has been and will be, will not lead us to the victory we desire.” Tara explained, “We have already exposed it to you enough, press the button if you need anything. Jacob will be ready on your call for anything you need.”
As her voice ended the small metal slit was closed, and any trace of light was eradicated from the metal chamber I had been placed in. They got what they wanted, a brain to keep the secrets so that they know what they are dealing with, but I didn’t know being a prisoner was part of the job description.
The metal was too allow nothing in so that the memory contagion they all possess will not be able to reach me. The darkness, even though you couldn’t even see the metal wall two feet away, was strangely pusillanimous. All my life I had lived in the darkness of night, but even the night gave the moon and the stars. I was never really in true darkness until now, in a strange room, no family left, a prisoner to help others, alone.
“Lisa, are you out there somewhere?” I couldn't help but saying into the darkness.
“Did you need something Zack?” Jacob opened the small slit sending a blinding white light scorching into my eyes.
“No,” I muttered as I turned my back to the door, the light, and him.
“It’s only been three minutes and you already are going mad. Tell me, what was it like on this Earth of yours?” Jacob asked.
“Have you never been on Earth?” I jumped, I thought they were being saved and brought here.
“I was too young.” Was all he was able to say.
“The nights were as warm as what I've been told was the usual for a regular day. The days are a mystery, I have not idea what truly happens, but I've been told there are legends of where men have ventured out during the day and they die, as if they melt as soon as the sun touches them.”
“That has to be a myth, how can a person actually melt?” Jacob didn’t believe me.
“Everything has a melting point, even the human body.”
“What was the night like? I've heard stories but I've never actually seen the night.” I could hear Jacob as he sat leaning against the door of my containment.
“You've never seen the night time?” I was confused as I turned back to face the door.
“Teribericum has only day time, it's supposed to be because of the day hours are so terrible on Earth that the creators decided to make it to show the true beauty of light. And the whole chrome look of the city, it makes it look so perfect, without the light you'd see how truly dark everything is.” Jacob sounded despondent. “What of the stars?”
“Brighter and more beautiful than any chrome covered building anywhere on Teibericum. The night, a blanket a darkness ascends, but it gives life to the stars you can’t see during the day. As if little diamonds hang in the sky, that’s how my mom always told me. Apparently they're used to be whole galaxies of stars, brilliant spirals of light that would leave the echo inside of you that how could you be the only inhabited planet out there.”
“Well there’s Teibericum.”
“Before Teibericum, there were whole solar systems. Full of planets, stars, maybe even life. No one ever found out if there was more life in the universe, apparently all the galaxies disappeared over time. But even you’ve seen a star before. You can see it right now as you look through any window. The sun is a star, but it's so close that it creates all of the light that we see, well you see. The stars are other suns out there, gigantic balls of burning gas thousands of light years away clinging onto the life of their own little planets. The sky used to have more of them, but they’ve mostly gone out.”
“Wow, what else exists at night?” Jacob was generally curious, he was rather young to have as much as this rebellion thrusted upon him. Maybe fifteen at most. But I couldn’t hold back from telling him about all I've heard about and seen.
“There used to be something called an aurora borealis, a rainbow of light that would go across the sky in the northern most parts of Earth. Though when the ozone layer disappeared so did the aurora borealis. I was told it was as if all the water colors decided to splash together in wavy bands and dance along the night sky. But still out of everything that existed at night was my favorite of all, the moon.” I smiled as I remembered the stories my mother used to tell me.
“What’s a moon”
As if he was a little kid he knew nothing, how long have these people been taking them if he was so young as to not remember what life on Earth was like. Though I guess he also is lucky, he doesn’t have to worry about all the struggles of life, and the tortures of what’s happened, and losing the people closest to you. “Lisa.”
“The moon is called Lisa? That’s weird, I know someone named Lisa so I guess that is an interesting comparison. She’s amazing, her eyes shine so bright as if they were a ball of glowing white beauty clinging to to the darkness of her irises. She was saved from Earth at a really young age, but I also saw her through the screens as she grew up, on Earth. Weird right?”
“On Earth, Jessica, Lisa. You know Lisa! Is she safe, do you know where she is? And wait, do you having feelings for her?” I jumped towards the small opening.
Jacob shot up with me and was completely stunned, we both were. “Jacob! Shut that opening! We have to limit almost to the point of stopping his contact with us so he doesn't catch this, close it and don’t open it again for the rest of the day!” Tara shouted.
As my last opening to give me the answers I so desperately desired closed I was helpless. “No wait! Please I have to know! She's my sister.” The last sentence was cut off as I sunk to the ground.
Lisa is alive, she's out there somewhere, I have to get out of here and find her. She could be in danger if these rebel people are right. Now I just have to find a way out of this cell, how hard could it be?
Lisa, from the day I lost you I never was the same. You're my sister, from the day you were born I had sworn to protect you. I failed you once, I will not fail you again.
