Chapter 4

The cool breeze of the night invited chills into my body.

Even with the jacket it was getting colder with the coming seasons. The streets were empty, but lit by the streetlights every 10 feet or so. The buildings surrounding me appeared to also house apartments and more people.

It was always good to survey the area you took shelter in. I would finally have some time to plan out my next moves while Serena was passed out on the couch. It had only been a day but she kept me busy with her useless endeavors of shopping and having "fun". I didn't think I would ever understand humans, even in all my time spent in this realm.

I walked down the street, careful to watch for hooligans wandering the alleys in search of prey. I could hear laughing from nearby. A group of humans about to do something stupid.

I followed the sound to the origin location. A bar by the name of Twin Barrels. It smelled heavily of alcohol and the sounds of loud conversations rang out from the inside.

I found myself entering the place out of curiosity, my legs moving of their own volition. As I entered, my eyes struggled to take in all the... stupidity. Humans clinging to one another and laughing at nothing. Tripping over themselves and drowning themselves in alcohol. It was almost funny to watch them. They had no defense if someone were to attack. Such fragile creatures humans were.

I made my way to the counter where a young man asked me what I would like.

"Whatever you think is best", I told him.

I had no experience with alcohol, even in my time among the humans. The man brought me back a glass bottle full of liquid and took the cap off of it for me.

"Bottoms up", was all he said as he moved to the next customer.

I took a sip and nearly spit it back out. This stuff was horrible! I took a few more sips and found it was more tolerable, but not enough to crave it.

I left the bar as I had entered, confused and slightly annoyed. Of course however, life picks these moments to kick you. A hand flew over my mouth and something hard hit the back of my head. My vision blurred as I felt my body being dragged off into what I could see was an alley. I could hear muttering around me. A plan of escape and people calling dibs on random items.

I could feel a pair of hands digging through my pockets and my wallet was retrieved. Who dared to rob me? In an alley!?

I attempted to get up and felt a blow to my side. I grunted and prepared for the next strike. As it came towards me I grabbed the attacker and threw him off me. The others were not entertained. They all gathered around me, kicking. I was enraged. I let my glamour dissipate and flapped my wings, creating a barrier of wind between me and them. As I stood, I bared my fangs and stared at my attackers.

"Who... the fuck... do you think you are?", I growled at them.

They seemed paralyzed, most likely out of fear and threw the wallet towards me as they ran. I picked up my wallet and recasted my glamour.

"Fucking idiots", I mumbled as I looked up into the sky.

It was near morning. How long had I been out here? I rushed back to the apartment, hopefully before Serena awoke. I managed to get back in enough time to witness her sleeping body roll over and her eyes crack open.

"Good morning", she yawned, "were you out?"

I shook my head, attempting to seem innocent. She must have believed me because she sat up in the blanket and looked out the windows.

"Nice weather today, huh?"

I nodded.

She looked at me and then stood up. She came closer and once again put her head against my chest, but this time in the center. I still had no reasoning for her behavior but I allowed it none the less. It seemed to make her happy and feel comfortable. She smiled at me.

"What do you want to do today?", she asked.

And that was when I realized, no one had ever cared to ask me that. I had always been alone and I did what I wanted sure, but I did it alone. Not once had anyone wanted to do anything with me.

I looked down at her and said, "Whatever you want to do", and she smiled even wider.

"I think... I want to spend the day indoors... with you", she said, blushing ever so slightly.

I nodded and she led me back to the couch.

"Have you ever played Onu before?", she asked me as she fetched a pack of cards.

I shook my head. What the hell was Onu? She explained it was a game where you want to use all your cards before your opponent. You used the number and color of the cards to win. I had no idea what she meant. She offered to play a game so she could teach me. She sat across from me and held her cards. She played a red card with the number 6 on it.

"So now if you have a red card or a card with the number six on it, you play it", she explained carefully.

I looked through my hand. A blue six! I placed it on top of hers.

"There you go! You're getting it", she said excitedly as we continued to stack the cards.

It usually ended with her winning and I would lose but it entertained her all the same. After ruthlessly beating me at Onu, she decided we should try a different game.

Millionaires was my favorite. It started you off with a couple thousand dollars of game money and then you went about creating an economic empire. I was really, and I mean really, good at this one. The game lasted about 4 hours but I enjoyed every part of it. I had dazzled her with my magnificent skill, although that's where it stopped.

Every other game we played I almost never won. It didn't really matter. Serena seemed to enjoy completely obliterating me at every twist and turn. As long as she was happy, free stuff would continue to fall into my hands.

It was about noon when she decided we should eat. I observed as she made us two identical sandwiches. Each comprised of lettuce, tomato, and a meat she called roast beef. We ate and laughed as we talked about how bad I was at "board games", she called them. After we finished I suggested we play more board games and she laughed.

"Are you sure you can put up with more losses?", she asked, smiling.

"I can try", I said.

We played Scramble next. It was a game about creating words and scoring points using those words. As she explained she sauntered across the room and placed herself on my lap. She peered back at me.

"Anyone sitting here?", she said with a smile.

I didn't know what else to do except stare. She seemed pleased but I was acutely aware she was still in her underwear and t-shirt. She seemed not to care, and as hard as I tried not to pay any attention to it, it was distracting. A cheap trick she was employing so she could win. I would not allow it!

As we played, we exchanged words and she would laugh when she saw me struggle to find one. It wasn't going to deter me. I would beat her at this for using such a devious tactic. The game ended with my score being 325 and hers being 250. She looked back at me.

"How did you do that?", she asked bewildered.

I looked back with a smirk. "I'm just that good I guess."

She had a look in her eye and I couldn't quite place it. And then she kissed me as she rearranged herself on my lap. It was lust... or something close. I was caught off guard and when she broke away, we looked at each other.

"I'm sorry, was that... weird?", she asked, cheeks flushed.

I looked back and smiled.

"Not at all", I lied.

We kissed for a couple minutes before she finally got up to clean the dishes from lunch. I sat, confused, on the couch. How could she contain such feelings for someone, no, something such as me? It just didn't click in my head. She returned while I was deep in thought and flicked the TV on.

"I wonder if there's anything good on", she said as she browsed channels.

She finally settled on a sitcom about a family in San Francisco. They seemed to be a dysfunctional bunch, but a family none the less. We must've watched it into the late hours because we both fell asleep on the couch. I'll admit, today was confusing for me, but it wasn't totally detestable.
