Train of Fools

//

Me and Cory were discussing our plans for the new year when Shawn came into Cory's house.

"Cory! Cory, guess what. For New Year's Eve, I got us a limousine," Shawn said.

I gape as Cory questions, "A limousine?"

"Yeah, yeah. That's short for 'limo'," Shawn brushed aside. "My Uncle Laslo's stretch limo. He's not busy that night, so he's gonna be our chauffeur."

"That's great," I say. "But when I tell my mom, Zack is going to wanna go."

"That's fine, he's the life of the party," Cory answered. "You know, Topanga's gonna love this. I mean, we can go to any party, anytime," Cory added.

Mr. Feeny came in. "Children. Quick, where are your parents?" Mr. Feeny asked Cory.

"Oh, they're out, Mr. Feeny. Why?" Cory asked.

"My cab to the airport is waiting, and all I have is traveler's checks, so I-"

Shawn smirked as he interrupted. "You're asking us for money, aren't you?"

'Yes, I've hit bottom," Mr. Feeny admits.

"Welcome!"

The sound of a car horn came from outside. "Please, gentlemen. I miss this flight, I kiss my week in the Bahamas goodbye."

"The Bahamas sounds wonderful." I pull out my wallet. "Mr. Feeny, good thing I just happen to have some of my-"

Shawn gently pushed my hands down from handing over my money. "No, no, no, no, Beautiful, please." He walked up to Mr. Feeny. "Allow me. Would, uh, 20 bucks get you to the airport?"

"I suppose," Mr. Feeny answered.

Shawn turned to Cory. "Cor, lend me 20 bucks. Come on." Reluctantly, Cory pulled out his twenty bill to Shawn. Shawn was about to hand over the money until he pulled his hand back. "You know, if you had thought about this ahead of time, you wouldn't be in this situation."

"Yes, yes, yes," Mr. Feeny said, annoyed as Shawn brought the dollar up to his nose, dragging it across his underside of his nose to which Mr. Feeny snatches the money from him. "Thank you."

"Excuse me," Shawn continued, cupping his ear.

"Thank you!" Mr. Feeny exclaimed.

"Hey. Hey, you don't have to shout." Mr. Feeny huffed before walking out the back door to which Shawn calls out, P'enne arrabbiata!"

I chuckled, pushing hair out of his eyes. "Shawny, you just wished him a spicy pasta."

Shawn paused for a moment before saying, "I know."

"Oh, my God!" I heard Eric yell causing all of us to run to the living-room to which Eric was on the phone. "No! No! No way!"

"Eric, what's the matter?" Cory asked.

Eric hung up, tossing the phone to Cory. "Hot cha-cha!"

Mr. Matthews came in with Mrs. Matthews, to which he asked, "I heard screaming. Something wrong?"

"Oh, Dad. Thanks for giving birth to me," Eric told him.

Mrs. Matthews closed the door. "I was there too."

"Oh, right. Kudos, Mom. Get this. Your firstborn, the fruit of your loom, has a dream date this New Year's Eve with supermodel Rebecca-Alexa."

"Rebecca-Alexa?" Shawn questioned. "The jeans girl? The one with the-?"

"Yes!"

"And the-?"

"Yes!"

"No!"

"Yes, yes, yes!"

"I should probably get a leash for Shawn when Rebecca-Alexa comes," I remark.

"Yeah, he's going to need it," Cory told me before asking Eric. "Eric, how did you scam this?"

"She's Jason's second cousin, she's in from out of town, she needs a date, so she's going out with me! I am just so happy!" Eric exclaimed.

"All those long, hard years of dating finally paid off, huh?" Mr. Matthews spoke.

"Well, not for her, but..." Cory trailed off.

"Oh. No, just think. I mean, when that clock strikes 12, I'll be kissing the famous blonde lips of supermodel Rebecca-Alexa in front of all of Philly," Eric said. "Oh! Mommy, Daddy catch me!"

He fell forward and none of us made an effort to catch him.

***

Later, Mom had already left to hang out with some friends at a party so that left me and Zack, to get ready for the party Shawn told us about. Zack immediately wanted in as soon as he was told about the limousine.

"Hey, Betty, come on, let's head to the Matthews already," Zack called from downstairs.

I placed on white high heels I know are probably going to kill my feet before I yell back, "I'm coming!"

I walked downstairs to see Zack dressed up and pacing in the living-room.

"You look...okay," Zack spoke.

I nod. "Thanks. You look...average," I reply.

"Sure, but all the ladies love it," Zack smirked.

I roll my eyes, opening the front door. "Let's go, dork."

We walked to Cory's and walked inside to see Mrs. Matthews cooing over Eric, "Oh, Eric. You look so handsome."

"Really?" Eric questioned.

"Absolutely."

"Too handsome?"

I chuckled before answering, "Eric, you look like the type of handsome Rebecca-Alexa or any other super model would wanna kiss."

Eric pointed to me. "See? There's someone who gives an honest answer."

Mrs. Matthews wanted over to me and Zack. "Oh, you two look so beautiful."

I smile gratefully. "Please, Mrs. Matthews, stop."

"Or don't. I'm fine with your compliments," Zack replied.

Cory came downstairs. "All right, Mom. I'm gonna wait outside for Shawn, okay?" Cory spoke.

Mrs. Matthews stopped him. "All right, stop. Wait. Let me look at you. Come here."

"Mom..."

Mrs. Matthews smiled. "Oh, Alan. Remember when the two of 'em would stay up late on New Year's Eve and eat popcorn and watch the ball drop? What has happened to my babies?"

"Dad, she's not gonna cry now, is she?" Cory asked.

"Amy. Mascara," Mr. Matthews warned her. "We haven't got that kind of time."

"Oh, admit it, boys. Those were great times."

"Oh, sure. I mean, you guys got to go out. I was stuck here with Cory, trying to pull Raisinets out of his nose," Eric replied.

"Yeah, I'm sure if it wasn't for those shrimp forks, they'd still be up there," I add.

"You know, I haven't heard a thank-you," Eric stated.

"Now, guys, be careful tonight. You know, New Year's Eve brings out all the crazies," Mrs. Matthews told us.

Shawn entered the house. "Come on, everybody! Let's get crazy!"

"He's on my side," Cory said.

"And he's my crazy," I say, walkingg right next to Shawn.

"And...she's my beautiful, blonde princess," Shawn added, wrapping an arm around my waist.

"Watch the hands, Hunter, I'm right here," Zack snapped.

Shawn ignored him. "Cory, Uncle Laslo and our limo await."

All of us looked out the door. "Why does that limo look so strange?" Mrs. Matthews questioned.

"Maybe because it's a hearse," Mr. Matthews answered.

The limo's horn tooted out the death march. Yikes.

"That's cool," Cory brushed aside.

"Yeah. Wait till you see what's in the back seat," Shawn told him, pulling his out to the limo.

***

Later, we all walked back into the Matthews home.

"Nice going, Shawn," Cory scolded. "Without Uncle Laslo's hearse, how are we gonna make it to the parties?"

"Hey, hey. It's not my fault, okay? You see a corpse breathing, you've gotta take it back. It's the right thing to do, man," Shawn told him.

"Look, I'm happy for the stiff, all right? But it really stuck it to a lot of people."

"Yeah, I don't think that guy was dead in the first place," Zack stated.

"Gee, guys, it's New Year's Eve. A time to celebrate, not fight," Topy spoke.

"Thank you, T. Let's try and stay positive," I add.

"You know what? You're right, girls. Okay. And we're gonna make this the best New Year's Eve ever. If we were dead, 'cause then we'd have a ride," Cory's mood changed, glaring at Shawn.

Eric walked in with- oh my God. "Oh, Rebecca-Alexa, I am so sorry the car broke down," Eric told her.

"Eric, don't worry about it. These things happen," Rebecca-Alexa replied smoothly.

"You understand? You're not mean and icy? Oh! You are a super-duper model."

Once Eric walked away, Shawn and Zack walked up to her. "Oh, my God. Do do you know who you are?" Shawn questioned. "You're Rebecca-Alexa."

"I'm Zack and I'm a big, big, big fan. I-I'm huge," Zack giggled.

Rebecca smiled at him. "Thank you."

Cory also stepped forward. "Hi. Hi. I- I'm Cory. I'm Eric's brother. Um, this is Topanga. She's a girl from school, but-"

"Cory?" Topy questioned him.

"She's also my girlfriend, and I love her very much, so, uh, don't get any ideas."

"So so, do supermodels have any special powers? I mean, like, can you read what I'm thinking?" Shawn asked.

Rebecca paused for a moment before answering, "Yes."

"I'm really sorry," Shawn apologized, looking down shamefully. I smack the back of his head. "I have a girlfriend and I love her to the moon and back so..."

"That's me," I point out. "I love everything you do, Rebecca-Alexa. Name's Betty Cooper."

"Hi," Rebecca smiled.

Eric walked back over to us. "Rebecca-Alexa, I lucked out. I got us the last cab in Philly."

"Oh, Eric, you gotta let us share it," Cory pleaded.

"All right, let me think." He paused. "I'm seeing a big, hairy 'no'."

"Eric, this is my first New Year's Eve out of the house, all right? I mean, without this cab, we're stranded."

"All right, hold on, hold on." He paused again. "No, I tried. I just can't care less."

Rebecca placed a hand on Cory's shoulder. "Cory, I know how you feel. My older sister never took me anywhere. I never forgave her."

"Did you rethink it?" Zack smirked.

"Yeah. Cor, great idea. Why don't you share our cab, bud?" Eric asked.

"Why, thanks, Eric. What made you change your mind?" Cory asked.

"Why don't you come over here, and I'll tell you?" Eric asked, dragging Cory to the other side of the room.

They spoke in low voices before Cory stated, "Oh, Eric, don't you worry about that. I am not gonna do anything stupid."

***

Not even 10 minutes later-

"Cory, how could you do something so stupid?" Eric asked as we walked back inside the house. "You sent away the last cab in the city."

"Look, I'm telling you. There was something weird about that driver. I mean, didn't you see his license in the windshield? It wasn't even his picture," Cory stated.

"Cory, if stupidity was in the Olympics, you'd win a Nobel prize."

"Um, golden metal," I correct.

"Yeah, what blonde said," Eric pointed.

"Look, Eric, the man was obviously an impostor, okay? I mean, for all I know, he was gonna take us to some warehouse and cut out our livers," Cory exasperated.

"Hey, no biggie. I've already had mine out," Shawn stated calmly on the couch.

I kiss the top of Shawn's head. "I love you, but you really make me concerned."

Eric told the model, "Rebecca-Alexa, I apologize for all the stupidity that runs in this family. I'm just a carrier."

Rebecca took the news well. "It's no big deal. I don't need to go to a big, crowded party with everyone staring at us."

"Oh, we're goin', baby."

"Hey! Light bulb. Why don't we just have our own little party right here?" Topy questioned. I'm telling you, it'll be so much fun."

"Totally," I agreed. "Making popcorn..."

"Watching the ball drop-"

"All right, all right. Cory, Shawn, make it stop," Eric cuts Topy off. Shawn pulled me down on the couch beside him, letting me rest my head against his shoulder. "Look, Rebecca-Alexa, one way or another, we are gonna be seen at that party."

"How? I mean, what are we gonna do? Take the subway?" Rebecca questioned.

***

Next thing I know, is that we're taking the subway.

"Great idea, Rebecca," Eric told her.

"I wasn't being serious," she replied.

Well, then, you lucked out, 'cause this is fun. I mean ridin' the rails in a mighty locomotive. I think I can, I think I can, I think I can," Eric chanted.

"It's nice to see you in a better mood, brother," Cory told Eric.

"Just die," Eric said through a gritted smile.

"Isn't this great? There is something so exciting about doing things by the seat of your pants," Topy spoke.

"Yeah, like that guy," Eric pointed.

All of our heads turned to the back of the train car.

They all groaned in disgust while Shawn covered my eyes with one hand.

"Hey, Cory, why do I feel like we're being watched?" Shawn asked, now uncovering my eyes.

"You feel that too?" Cory questioned.

"Yeah, it's weird. You know, it it feels kinda like-"

They both turned to see a poster of Mr. Feeny, stating, 'I WANT YOU TO STAY IN SCHOOL' to which both boys screamed.

Once the train stopped, Shawn and Zack were rushing people off the train. "Okay. Come on. Let's do it, people."

"We've got parties to go to."

"What's your rush?" I ask.

"It's only 10:30. We have plenty of time before midnight," Topy added.

"Yeah. And, Eric, you'll be kissing Rebecca in front of all of Philly, just like you wanted," Cory stated.

"In front of all of Philly?" Rebecca asked shocked.

"You know, I don't know where he gets this kinda stuff," Eric tried to move on.

"So your brother thinks of me as just a trophy?" Rebecca asked Cory.

Cory paused, looking to Rebecca and Eric who shook his head. "Yes!" he exclaimed.

"Cory!" Eric yelled.

"How do you lie to a supermodel? I mean, those lips can see right through you."

"Eric? I just remembered. I have to go home," Rebecca excused before leaving the train and into the night.

"What? No, wait! Rebecca-Alexa!" The train doors closed on Eric as he called for the super model. "No!" He ran to each door. "Rebecca-Alexa! No, wait! Stop the train! Stop the train! Rebecca-Alexa! No!"

"Eric! It's okay," Cory tried to comfort Eric.

"I have to get off the train. I have to get off the train!"

"No. Look, you can get off at the next stop, all right? There aren't any cabs left in the city. She can't get too far. Trust me, okay? Everything is gonna be dandy."

Just then, the train lights shut off and my body was jerked backwards at the train's sudden stop.

Once the lights turned on, Eric was glaring at Cory from her floor. "What did you do?"

"Nothing," Cory defended himself.

I looked down to see I fell and landed into Topy's lap in a seat. "Hiya, Topy," I chuckle.

She smiled back. "Betty Cooper. I love you to death, but please get off my lap. You're kind of squishing my legs."

"Oh, sorry," I tell her, sitting beside her instead.

The voice on the train intercom spoke, "Ladies and gentlemen, this is your-" his voice began to cut out. "We seem to be experiencing a major-"

"What did he say?" I ask Eric.

"He said Cory broke the train," Eric sassed. "Trapped on a subway. This is a nightmare!"

I huff to myself as Cory sat in front of me and Topy. "Look, no one's gonna bother us if we just act tough, okay?" Cory told us. We nod as Cory slouched over. "Boy, I love New Year's Eve. I'd sure hate to have to kill somebody, though..." The man beside Cory intimidatingly lowered his newspaper. "With my flu virus."

"Tough, huh?" I tease Cory.

"In my defense, a flu virus can be deadly," Cory replied.

I turn my gaze to the panicking Eric by the train doors. "Okay, if I could just pry my fingers into the door..." He made a pained face. "They would get stuck, like this."

He groaned in pain as he pulled his hands back at the train intercom came on. "Attention, passengers. The is...still not functioning. Do not, under any circumstances...which may result in death or dismemberment."

"Now what did he say?" Cory asked his brother.

"He said, 'Cory, go out and lick the third rail'," Eric sassed.

"Hey! Buck up, buckers." Topy stood up. "It's probably just a teeny electrical problem. And look on the bright side. The city is saving on electricity," Topy tried.

"What is it with you tonight, Topanga? Did you swallow Sandy Duncan?" Cory asked.

"Don't be mean," I defend Topy.

"That's it, Cory Matthews. I am sick of being the rah-rah girl!" Topy snapped. "You try being the positive one all the time, and using words like 'buckers'! I have demons, so there!"

I stood up, wrapping an arm around Topy. "You okay, sweetie?" I ask, concerned.

"Wow. What a rush," she answered.

I shush her, ushering her back to the seat. "It's okay. Sun's getting real low."

"You, uh you guys don't spend a lot of time on the subway, do you?" some guy asked Cory and Eric.

"Not on subways this nice," Cory answered. "So, uh, what do you think the problem is?"

"A loose wire, an air blow in the Cineston."

Cory scoffed at Eric. "Duh."

"How long till they fix it?" Eric asked.

"On a holiday? It's hard to say, man," he answered.

Just then, Shawn and Zack came in from the train car ahead "Okay, guys. I have been up and down this train, and here's the scoop. Car five, parochial schoolgirls who ditched their nun," Zack stated.

"Nice," Cory told him before noticing Topy looking at him. "For Zack."

"Oh, and car two, Mrs. Ginelli just went into labor. I saw the head," Shawn added.

"Um..." I really couldn't say anything at this point now.

"Hey, what are you eating there?" Cory asked Zack.

"Oh, that's the best part. Some caterers are stuck in the next car."

"Ooh, food," I say, standing up.

"Look. Look, it's a tiny, tiny crab cake," Zack showed Cory.

"In a light pastry shell," Cory grinned.

Eric slapped the crab cake out of Zack's hands. Will you forget about the crab cake? The subway. The subway, can they fix it? What's wrong with it?"

"Why would I ask?" Zack scoffed. "We've got food, babes and birth."

"Eric, the cycle of life is complete," Shawn added.

"Not without Rebecca-Alexa," Eric replied.

"Okay, later," I tell the rest of the group following my brother and boyfriend to find food, wherever those caterers are.

***

Me and Shawn rushed back into our original car. "Okay. Mrs. Ginelli's real close. Does anybody here know anything about deliveries?"

"Like a doctor or-" I trail off, seeing a pizza delievery guy. "Well, not a doctor, but it'll work. Shawn," I point to the guy, tightening Shawn's jacket around me.

"You. Pizza guy. You'll have to do," Shawn pulled the pizza guy up to rush to car 2. "Come on!"

***

I adjust the party hat on my head as Cory told everyone on the train, "Okay! All aboard the party car. We've got refreshments by the conductor's booth, we've got dancing right here, and if you guys want a quite place to chat, there is plenty of room down by the sad guy," he motioned to Eric.

"Hey, everybody! Listen up. How about we give it up for the man who put together this little underground paartay?" the guy from earlier announced, his hand on Cory's shoulder.

I stopped dancing with Topy to ask, "What?" with everyone else.

"Party," he clarified.

"Oh." We all cheered for Cory.

I dance my way towards Shawn seeing him dump many mints in his mouth. "What are you doing?" I ask.

"I just ate a garlic ball and I'm pretty sure you don't wanna be kissing me with garlic breath," he answered.

"And I regret eating that garlic ball," I say, unwrapping mint gum from my pocket and chewing it as quick as could.

"Okay, everybody! Listen up, listen up! The New Year is coming in! Five..." We all began to count down. "Four, three, two, one! Happy New Year!"

I wrap my arms around Shawn in an embrace, pressing my lips against his as he dipped me.

Shawn pulled back for a second. "Well, I know two things for sure."

"And what's that?" I ask.

"That I'm in love with you and I wasn't chewing gum ten seconds ago."

I roll my eyes before kissing Shawn again.

Zack came in. "Hey! Hey, hey! Hey, good news, everybody! Twins!"

"Mrs. Ginelli had twins?" Topy asked.

"No. But I do." Two blondes stood by Zack. "This is Linda, and her sister, More-Linda."

***

A few days after New Year's.

"Hey, Mr. Feeny. How was your trip?" I ask as me and the boys see him return home.

"Hey, maybe the kids can loan you some money," Mrs. Matthews suggested.

"Oh. A little short again...George?" Shawn asked with a smirk.

"I'd rather risk my liver," Mr. Feeny replied before leaving.

Hi!

Sorry for the late update, I've been trying to publish a Drake Parker fanfic and I'm having writer's block on what or how to begin it.
