Boy Meets Real World

//

Betty sat next to Shawn on the couch of his new apartment.

"So I was thinking a date this week, anything you want," she said with a smile, trying to ignore Cory filming them in the kitchen. "Movie, game, swim...."

"Huh," Shawn said. "Well, my October's pretty full. But the third Friday in November looks good. You'll have to share me with Phyllis, but why don't I pencil you in?"

She hit his shoulder. "Shut up...Is there a Phyllis?"

"Nope, only you, gorgeous," he replied with a smile.

She grinned. "Good, that's just the way I like it." She kissed him softly.

Jack came in walking with a suit on, making her pull back from Shawn. "Hey, Brother Shawn and his girlfriend Betty. It's me, Jack, home from college. Got an 'A'. Now they want me to teach."

"Cut," Cory called, lowering his camera. "Let me explain this once again. I'm shooting a documentary for Feeny's film class. It's like MTV's The Real World. Now, I'm gonna follow you around the apartment, but for this to work, I need you to please be yourselves."

The three shared a look.

"Well, my October really is full," Shawn mumbled.

"And I just actually asked Shawn out on a date."

"I really did get an 'A'," Jack added.

Eric walked in wearing a wetsuit with a surfboard under his arm. "What's up, dudes? Caught some major waves downtown."

"Now, that's not real!" Cory exclaimed.

"But 'A' for the effort," Betty said.

"Come on! Let's do this again." The two older boys walked out the door again as Betty and Shawn sat back on the couch.

***

Betty sat in Mr. Feeny's class with Shawn as they watched Cory's documentary, clapping as it ended.

"An excellent start on your documentary, Mr. Matthews," Mr. Feeny said, walking up to Cory

"What?" Cory spoke with a smile and a look of surprise.

"Yes, excellent. I said, 'Excellent'. And I was talking about something you did. I don't know what came over me."

Cory smiled as he sat down. "Wow. Mr. Feeny, you really think that I made a good film?"

"No. I think The Graduate was a good film. What we have here is an excellent-"

"What?"

Mr. Feeny gave him a look. "Don't toy with me, Mr. Matthews. I would simply suggest that this being your senior year and NYU having a wonderful film program, that this student film could be your foot in the door to a fine university." Mr. Feeny looked at the class. "That said, are there any comments on the documentary we just saw?" A girl sitting next to Zack raised her hand. "Angela."

She lowered her hand. "No offense, Cory, but your project looks like you ripped off that show on MTV, The Real World."

"I have no knowledge of this Real World of which you speak. My real world is the real, real world," Cory said quickly as the class bell rang.

Betty stood up, grabbing her stuff as she grabbed Shawn's hand, walking out. "I'm so hungry right now."

"We'll get something."

She nodded. "So Shawny, I have to ask if you know Cory is always gonna be around you with his camera?"

"He said he'll only be around a few times. Why?"

"Because he was around a lot when I was with you..."

"So?"

"I'm only asking cuz I don't want a camera in my face every time we make out."

"That won't happen, Cory knows boundaries."

She only hummed.

***

Someone rang the buzzer to Shawn's apartment, unaware Shawn ran out of the bathroom with only a towel around his waist and Cory followed him in a rain suit and camera.

"You go too far," Shawn told him.

"I've got a film to make, Shawn. Now, you agreed to do this."

"Cory, you have five minutes of me in the shower! You can't use that!"

"Well, it's for the European version," Cory replied. "Okay, if I don't get into NYU, my next choice is Sweden YU."

Shawn pulled the door open before politely saying, "Hello."

"Hi, I'm Wendy from 3-B. I stopped by to say hi to Jack," Wendy spoke as Betty walked over to the open door.

"Oh, he's not here."

"Shawny, I think I left my-" Betty spoke before noticing Shawn only in a towel, her eyes running down him.

"You left your what?"

"My, um, my thing. I-I forgot," she said, her cheeks tinting pink.

"Drop the towel," Cory whispered.

Shawn slowly turned to look at Cory as did the two girls. "What?"

"Drop the towel. Make it look like an accident, but drop it."

"Any other time I wouldn't mind but-" Betty mumbled.

"Why is a strange boy with a camera dressed like Paddington Bear?" Wendy asked.

"He's doing a student film. If it embarrasses you, you can just tell him to stop," Shawn said.

"No, no, I'm an acting major."

"Here we go."

She walked in front of the camera. "I have two monologs. Nora from A Doll's House and one that I wrote called, 'I'm a Little Unicorn.' I'm also very good at improv."

Cory smiled. "She's good at improv." Cory looked at Shawn. "Kiss her."

This made Betty snap out of it.

"Get away!" Shawn snapped.

"I can do love scenes. I'm not afraid," Wendy said but Betty moved in front of Shawn.

"My boyfriend. Goodbye." She looked slightly confused. "Sorry let me show you the way out." She grabbed the girl's arm roughly, pushing her out. "Don't let the door hit you on the way out." She slammed the door in her face.

"That works too," Cory spoke from behind the camera. "Jealous Betty is the best."

"She won't be the best when I smash your camera to bits."

Shawn grabbed her arm gently. "Hey, hey, relax. I don't kiss anyone but you."

She crossed her arms. "Prove it."

He grinned. "Okay." He leaned down, kissing her lovingly to which Betty held his face with her hands as his free arm wrapped around her middle.

"You should still drop the towel," Cory whispered.

The two pulled back giving Cory a look.

"Yeah, no, I'm not looking to make the next Pam and Tommy tape," Betty said quickly grabbing her homework from the table. "I'll see you later, Shawny."

"Okay, love you."

"Love you too."

She quickly left.

***

Betty walked out of the elevator with Cory and Topanga.

"And all through my life, everyone's always asked me, 'What do you want to be when you grow up, young whippersnapper?'" Cory ranted.

"Who talks like that?" Topanga asked.

"Crazy people. And the point is, it was a lot of pressure, Topanga. And now that I've found something that I'm good at, it's like the pressure's off."

Betty sighed. "Cory, why can't you just put down your camera and realize that our friend is in trouble?"

"Pressure, pressure from the friend," Cory mumbled as Betty opened the door.

"I thought I was doing you a favor," Jack told Shawn.

"Well, I don't need your charity," Shawn snapped.

"It's not charity. I felt bad for you because you couldn't afford those concert tickets, so I bought them."

"I don't want anything you bought with your father's money, okay?"

"Cory," Betty scolded as Cory began to film them but he ignored her.

"For your information, I work every summer for my money," Jack replied. "I'm not some spoiled little rich kid, okay? I pay for school with student loans. And what do you have against my father, Shawn?"

"Nothing. I don't even know him. What do you have against your real father?"

Jack paused. "Shawn, my father is the one who raised me. I can't just have feelings for someone I don't know."

"Yeah? Well, neither can I," Shawn replied. "You can find yourself another roommate."

Betty sighed. "Shawny...." She quickly followed him.

***

Betty walked through South Philadelphia, stopping in front of the old apartment where Shawn used to live with his dad a long time ago.

She immediately spotted his figure behind, bouncing a tennis ball against a wall to which she sighed, hugging him from behind, making him tense but put his hands on hers realizing who it was.

"Was looking for you," she mumbled softly, her head resting on his back.

"Sorry, needed to clear my head," he said softly.

She sighed. "Shawny...I think you should hear Jack out-"

"No," he immediately said, turning to her. "He's not even trying, he sees me as a charity case, clearly doesn't want me as his brother."

"Honey, that's not it..." she said, trailing off as she looked behind her boyfriend to see Cory walking over.

Shawn turned to him. "Hey. Look who's here. The documentary man. South Philly, making movies."

"Yeah, I figured you'd be here," Cory said. "Gosh, I haven't been here since you moved to the trailer park."

"Yeah," Shawn said, looking around. "You know, Jack lived here, too. Although I'm sure he's forgotten. So why don't you start rolling that thing, and we'll finish your movie."

"No. No, I'm not here for that. That's not important anymore," Cory replied.

"It is to me. I've got something to say. Turn it on." Cory reluctantly turned on his camera, holding it up to which Shawn began to speak, "I was seven when my dad first told me that I had a brother. You know, I always wanted a brother. I wondered what he looked like, if he'd like me, if he even knew about me. When I was 10, I finally got the courage to write Jack a letter telling him all about me. I didn't get an answer..." His voice changed as if he was holding back emotions. "But I kept writing to him because he was my brother. And I must have sent him, like, 15 letters, and I never got a single thing back. So I knew that he didn't want to have anything to do with me, and he still doesn't."

"I never got any letters," Jack said, walking over.

Shawn turned to him. "What are you doing here?"

"My mom must have thrown them away without showing them to me."

"I don't believe that. You're ashamed of me. You always were."

As Shawn tried to leave, Cory grabbed his arm but he moved out of his grip. "Let me go."

"No. You're not listening to him. Okay? Now listen to what he has to say," Cory told him.

Shawn looked at him. "Don't get in the middle of this."

"No, the problem is, Shawn, I didn't get in the middle of this in the beginning."

"You were behind your camera from the beginning. I didn't realize what was going on. Listen, it's not about my film anymore. It's too personal now."

Betty held Shawn's hand. "Shawn, you're being stubborn and I love that about you but just take a minute to listen to Jack. If you don't like what he has to say, you can walk but give him a minute. Please."

Cory nodded. "This is your life. Give it a happy ending, okay?"

Shawn walked back over to Jack. "Did she really throw them away?" he asked.

"I never got them, man," Jack answered.

"But if you had, would you have written me back?"

"If I had known you wanted to see me, I would've gotten on a bus and found you."

"Yeah?"

"I found you now, didn't I?"

"All I ever wanted was a brother."

"Okay. You got one."

Betty smiled to herself as Jack and Shawn hugged.

So...I realized it's been a while since I wrote for this book and I'm sorry...if anyone is still reading this. I just got caught up in writing for my other books and it took me a while to figure out the rest of the plot for this season, a lot of replanning was done.

Anyway, I know it's not much of a chapter but it's a start. Hope you enjoyed it.
