Chapter 2-- Leaving

Tommy's POV

Fridays have to be the best day of the week. It means we get two full days! Forty-eight hours! 2,880 minutes away from the guardians of the doomed, also known as, teachers.

I walked into my house laying down the donut box on our ugly yellow bench top in the kitchen. The colour itself wasn't ugly, it was just random against the browns and creams everywhere else.

''Honey is that you?''

''Yeah mum. Kitchen.''

I heard the familiar clatter of my mum feeling her way around her messy office before she came into the kitchen looking in my general direction.

''Did you have fun at school today hun?'' She smiled softly.

''Yeah mum.'' I helped her into her seat and turned the kettle on to make her tea while I sipped my hot chocolate that was made by none other than Chace.

''Mrs Mathews took me to the eye doctor today. He said there might be a surgery so that I can see again.'' She said excitedly before I spat my precious heavenly chocolate liquid all over the ugly and undeserving bench top. Boo.

''Miss-Mrs Mathews!?'' I chocked out.

Mrs Mathews just happens to be Chace's mother. When did our mums get all buddy buddy? Geez tell me these things mum!

''Yes, and Dr Lang said there's a surgery I can have'' She took a sip of the tea I had just finished making and gripped it's warmth.

I swear that woman could hold and swallow molten lava. She probably sleeps on hot coal. She's so weird. I mentally sighed.

''Oh that's wonderful mum! When and where!?'' I ran to hug her but she gave me a sympathetic look and put down her cup, looking in my general direction again.

''We need to talk.''

''Are you breaking up with me?'' I put a hand over my heart and gasped way too over dramatically.

''No'' She laughed and it brightened her face like it always did.

My mum was the general meaning of beauty. She was only 35, brunette hair, not too thin and the most captivating green eyes. She would give Chace a run for his money against my mum's eyes. I felt seriously honoured when anyone said I looked like her.

''Hun I have to go to America for this surgery and I can't pay for us both to go.'' She was tearing up, I could see she was upset.

''No! That's completely fine! I know how much this means to you. When do you have to leave?''

Mum was going to be able to see again! Living on my own for a while would be fine as long as she got this chance she's been waiting for years for. When we were walking home from a park one day, some guys came out of an alley and were drunk. I was only 5, I couldn't do anything as they shoved her around like a rag doll. She was protecting me when they shoved her on the cement and repeatedly hit her in the head. She now has retinal detachment and it can only be corrected by surgery but it's risky.

''I leave tomorrow.''

''What?'' I was shocked. I mean I was expecting it soon but not tomorrow.

''Well the surgery is next week but I'm getting a flight in the morning. I won't be back for a few months though for recovery and I'll visit Aunty Lorell while I'm there.'' She had pain in her voice.

We had never been apart for that long, especially not months. I was undoubtedly a complete and utter Mummy's Boy. She knew everything about me. We share everything. She knows I'm gay, she was the first one I went to talk to when I realised I had been staring at little Johnny's butt in second grade during PE. She knows I'm in love with Chace and she even knows I'm still a virgin! There's nothing in the dark!

There was a short silence before I broke it.

''Do you want me to help you pack?''

''Yes please hun.'' She smiled and I smiled back all the same even though she couldn't see it she somehow always knew.

I helped her pack for the rest of the night until it was 2am and we were both dead tired. It's been a long day. I'm in desperate need of my bed and admittedly my darkest secret, my teddy bear that I actually talked to sometimes. Don't judge me. I started walking out of the room when mum pulled on my sleeve.

''Sleep with me tonight?'' She begged.

I can tell her leaving me was as painful for her as it was for me. Of course it was idiot. I mentally slapped myself.

''Okay.'' I turned the light off and slipped into her bed with her and we both slept peacefully, hugging and holding hands which warmed my heart in a way only a mother could.

''Night mum'' I whispered and drifted off to sleep.
