Chapter 10

About two hours had passed since the man in red had disappeared. Both of the performers showed me all of the events that take place. Woodrow was telling me about how she thought I'd be a perfect candidate do to the acrobatics with her. But the thing was, was that I'm not much of a flexible guy. I mean, I couldn't even touch my toes if I tried. I never really thought that I'd have a need to. So that option was out of the question. She was also talking about Rusty being the fire throwing guy. He would juggle things that were set on fire, blow fire from his mouth, and even swallow the fire. Basically something that'd cause me to burn myself on several occasions. And apparently, the man in red doesn't believe that bright and colorful clowns are a good fit with his circus. So instead, he prefers his clowns to look like Jesters from old England. To be honest, it was actually a nice touch.

"So uh...I do believe that's all for now. Any questions at all, Ross?" Woodrow bounces on her heal. Her menacing, yet sweet golden eyes stared at me, waiting for an answer.

"No. I don't think so. I'll let you knew if I do." I sigh and look down at the ground. Boy, do I miss my bed right now. I miss laying there and looking out the window, listening to Brent curse under his breath about whatever book he was reading. As a matter of fact, I'd take that over any of this. "It's just...a lot to take in." I scuff my sneaker against the ground, longing for this to all be a dream.

Woodrow places her tiny hand on my shoulder, causing me to look up at her. Well, down at her since she was  much shorter that I was. "It always is. But you'll get used to it." She smiled at me. "Hey, who knows. Maybe you'll grow to love the place." Her hand was removed from me and she started walking away with Rusty right behind her. Love the place? I doubt that. Grow to deal with it sounds more like me.

"Heya!" The blond haired woman from earlier jumped from behind me, causing me to stumble, and almost to the ground. She just laughs at my reaction and helps me steady myself. "You alright there?"

"I almost had a heart attack because of you!" I hold my hand to my chest and sigh in an over exaggerated way.

"They tell you anything interesting?" The woman looks over to the performers who where now back to doing whatever they were doing before the man in red decided to pull them away.

"Clarify what you mean by interesting?" I chuckle to myself. "Cause there's a lot to take in from this."

The woman just laughs and tugs at my arm in the opposite direction from where we were facing. "It'll all sink in at some point don't worry. Tell me this, would you want to stay here with all of us? Or go back to that crappy old foster home you've been cooped up in for so long?" She made a good point. I mean, I had always, and I mean always wanted to leave that shithole. So I guess this would be the next best thing. But that shithole still held my closest friend. My only friend, for that matter. But...We would both have moved out and soon forgotten each other, right? This may be for the best..

"Ross. Mary." And now he was back. I could live with this, if it weren't for him. He made me feel uneasy about everything here. I didn't trust him.

"What now, Brendon?" Her tone of voice changed from the sweet woman she was, to someone you wouldn't want to mess with. To be honest, it kinda scared me.

"I told you to cut it out with that, first off." He replied to her. You could hear his voice growling as he said that. "And secondly, it's time to go."

"Go where?" This was confusing me even more.

"To our next destination, Ross." Next destination? This is a moving circus? I thought that it was only one that was set up and stayed in Las Vegas. And...I've never actually left Nevada.

"Come on." The woman who was called Mary, tugged at my arm and pulled me in the opposite direction. This was just making things worse. My mind was racing. What the hell was going on here?

As Mary and I walked towards the exit of the tent, I looked behind me to witness everyone packing things up. As few people as there were, they were working efficiently and quickly as the man in red, or uh, Brendon watched them from a distance. Soon I wasn't able to see anything else besides the darkness from outside. Turning my head around to face forward, I notice a big coach bus with its doors open.

Well...I guess I'm spending a few years at the circus aren't I?

~Five years later~

"Come on everyone! Pack up!" I yelled over to the performers as the last of the audience left the tent. "We're behind schedule already!" I stood there with my arms crossed, watching as everyone scrambled to take down their equipment.

"I'll take care of it." He placed his hand on the upper part of my back as he spoke. I look to my left to see Brendon standing there. His top hat always creating a shade over his eyes. "Your girl is waiting for you." I sensed a bit of annoyance in his voice. I don't think he likes her all too much. But that's not my problem.

"You sure, Bren?" I raise an eyebrow at him. All he did in return was give me a nod, not taking his gaze off the performers, and removed his hand from my back. "Alright, see you on the bus then." I turn and start heading towards the exit of the tent.

As I exit the tent, I'm pretty much tackled to the ground. "There you are!" She laughed and helped me to my feet, and I soon steadied myself. I roll my eye and wrap my arms around her in a hug.

"You have a thing for trying to make me fall, don't you Mary?" I join her in the laughter and give her a quick peck on the lips.

"It's working isn't is?" She smiled. "I just wanted to say that I was gonna be at a friends place later. So don't worry." She gets out of the hug and crosses her arms.

"I'm probably going to hang with everyone else. So you'll know where to find me." I smiled back at her.

"Well then, I'll be back later." She started to back away. "And keep in mind that our day is next week." I heard her giggle right before she ran off in the other direction. That's right. Our day. I couldn't believe that I was getting married in a week. It all came so quickly. But I don't regret any of it.

Brendon then stood by my side and pulled his top hat a little ways down his face. "Don't trust her." His words were simple. "Do not have this wedding. I am warning you." He turned to face me, his face menacing as he gave me a glare.

"You're 'warning' means nothing to me, Brendon. I'm not going to bail on my fiancée at our wedding. It's not going to happen. So cut out all this warning bullshit." I roll my eyes and back off a step.

All he did was sigh and bite his lip when he spoke. "You are going to regret listening to my words, Ross. Remember that." And he started walking away back towards the entrance of the tent.

"Now why's that then?" I cross my arm in annoyance. I wanted to hear his reasoning on how 'horrible' Mary is.

Brendon stopped walking and leaned on his cane with a hand resting on his hip. He sighed once more as he spoke. "You really want to know?" I made an 'Mhm' sound, still crossing my arms across my chest. Then within a second, he spun on his heel and glared at me from under his hat. "Mind you, I've known Mary for quite some time. Far longer than you have. I know what she's like. I know how she handles things. I know what she's hiding from you. Currently, too, she's hiding something from you."

"Like what?" Now he was just speaking nonsense. Mary would never hide anything from me. Would she?

"Oh, well imagine.." He looks up and waves his hand across my face before placing it back onto his cane. "As I'm pacing the pews in a church corridor, and I can't help but to hear. No I can't help but to hear in exchanging of words. 'What a beautiful wedding!' What a beautiful wedding says the bridesmaid to the waiter. 'Oh yes, but what a shame!' What a shame the poor grooms bride is. A. Whore." He stared at me menacingly before disappearing into the tent once more.
