CHAPTER 13: SHUT IT, SOLACE.
To say Sunshot was flabbergasted as realization hit him, would be an understatement.
If Paragon's mother was Ghost king's mother.... That would make them siblings?
Does that mean Ghost king killed THEIR sibling?
Had he murdered his own flesh and blood?
But then again, it made no sense. They couldn't possibly be brother and sister because Paragon was dark skinned and Ghost king, considering the small part of this neck which showed under the hood- which was also the only visible portion of skin on him- was pale as moonlight.
But...
What if?
"Who are YOU calling mom, huh?" Paragon snapped out.
So Paragon didn't think Ghostie was her brother? Or was she just being salty?
Ghost king paid her no heed, "no way! This is impossible!"
"Just admit it, you killed him!" Paragon pounced on him.
Ghost king flipped out of the way, "I DID NOT! I AM YOUR BROTHER!"
Okay, so he WAS Paragon's brother somehow apparently, so that means he killed THEIR sibling?
This was the most talking that had happened in a giht between the two of them that Will was a witness to. Will wasn't sure if the talking was clearing things up for him, or if it was confusing him even more.
It was probably the latter.
"MY BROTHER IS DEAD!" Paragon cried.
"I'M NOT DEAD! I'M STANDING RIGHT INFRONT OF YOU!" Ghost king screamed back, whatever restraint he had had earlier seemed to be cracking.
What-
Ghost king was claiming to be the brother who he was being accused of killing?
SOMEBODY EXPLAIN THIS TO WILL!
"SHUT UP!" Paragon flung herself at Ghost king, who faded into the shadows and re-materialized behind her.
He raised his gloved hands and curled his fingers into fists. Shadows darted towards him from all directions, dancing around him before winding themselves around Paragon, pinning her fists to her sides.
Ghost king walked around her to look her in the eye, his voice heavy with emotion Will didn't know he was capable of possessing, he spoke, "please, you have to believe me, I didn't kill your brother, I AM him!"
Paragon held his gaze, silence engulfing them.
Silence so deafening, so... impending.
Paragon parted her dark lips, "I... LIAR!"
She stuck out one of her feet, the only limbs she had that were not bound, and caught Ghost king in the knee, effectively sweeping him off his feet.
Ghost king had clearly not been expecting that, he only had a split second to register what was happening before he crashed to the ground.
Will winced internally as he saw Ghostie's head collide with the ground. The shadow faltered as his concentration broke, and Paragon wriggled free of her bounds.
She stood over Ghost king as he tried to gather his scattered bearings and raised her gem encrusted fist, "this is for my brother, Nico di Angelo!"
Okay what now-??
Nico di-
SOMETHING WAS DEFINITELY WRONG!
Paragon brought down her fist and-
"Stop!"
Willaim Andrew Solace-
WHAT the HECK are you DOING?
Honestly, Will wasn't sure himself.
Paragon jerked her head at him. "What did you say?"
Sunshot stepped forth, placing himself in front of the fallen villain. "I said stop."
"Why? He's a villain!" Paragon sneered at him, "wouldn't it be easier for you if I got rid of him?"
"Well- yes, but he shouldn't be punished for a crime he didn't commit."
Paragon laughed, harsh and cold, "oh but he did! He-"
"-didn't kill Nico di Angelo."
It took a second for his words to sink in.
Paragon seemed breathless as she whispered, "w-what? How can you say that?! I saw his BODY! Me and my mother- we gave him a funeral!"
"I know a Nico di Angelo, I don't know if it's the same person," Sunshot continued, albeit being very confused himself, "but he's very much alive, I met him earlier today too!"
Paragon seemed frozen.
"Black hair, dark eyes, pale skin, dashi-" Will stopped himself there, he had nearly said 'dashingly handsome' and god knows what else he'd say if he kept going.
Paragon nodded her head slowly, hey eyes were swirling with emotion, but then something snapped.
She growled at Sunshot, "YOU! You're the same as Ghost king! Lying to me!"
"I'm not lying! I-"
"You call yourself a hero! But you're helping the villain- How could you-"
That's all Will heard, because he felt someone's hand on his shoulder, then he was being pulled into the realm of cold, dark shadows.
****************
When they rematerialized, they were once again, in the old warehouse.
Will felt unsteady on his feet, but apparently, Ghost king felt worse.
As Sunshot stood shakily on his feet, Ghost king collapsed into him. Will reacted out of reflex, catching the villain before he managed to bash his head for the second time that night.
"Are you okay?!" Will asked frantically, lowering Ghost king to the ground so that he could sit against the wall.
"Fine."
Will sat himself down as well, not quite buying the villain's words but he forged on, "Now explain!"
Ghost king turned his mask to look at him, his figure slumping in exhaustion. "What?"
"Explain to me, what the heck is going on?"
"Why should I?"
"Um... I dunno, maybe because I SAVED you?"
"And I saved you too, that makes us even, I don't owe you anything."
URGH WHY IS THIS GUY SO GOOD WITH HIS WORDS?!!
"I've been watching the two of you fight without a single clue of what's going on, I think I deserve to know!"
Ghost king scoffed, "Nobody asked you to come and watch."
Sunshot bit down a curse, the next words that left his mouth... he had no idea where they came from, but they were to be the cleverest thing that he has ever uttered: "I've started having doubts."
"...."
"... about you."
Ghost king was effectively confused, his tired voice layered with bewilderment, "what..."
Will took a deep breath, "I don't think you're a villain."
A beat of silence.
Will felt like a weight had been lifted off him shoulders. He realized he believed what he said. He had been thinking about it for a long time and he was just in denial. He hadn't been ready to admit that all people who seemed like villains were not villains, and that all dark people weren't necessarily evil.
He had thought about how Ghost king never stole anything, how he never vandalized and how he had saved him enemy, Sunshot. He had thought about how he seemed unwilling to draw his sword against Will, how he seemed reluctant to raise a fist against Paragon.
He remembered how Ghost king had offered him help and he had declined thinking there was an elaborate plan beneath his words but then the vice versa of the situation happened. Will had not had any ulterior motives when he himself offered Ghost king help, but got accused of it anyway.
Ghost king's response came out in a whisper, barely audible, but Will heard it, "what makes you say that?"
"You seemed to be searching for something, but you never stole anything. You never harmed anyone. You never fought back. And also..." Will swallowed, casting Ghost king a glace, "you offered me help... you saved me..."
Ghost king remained quiet.
Sunshot continued his speech, "I don't think you're a villain, but if what Paragon says is true..." he paused, "so explain."
Silence rang in the warehouse. Will gazed inquiringly at Ghost king who finally sighed. He leaned his head against the wall, but winced and brought up a hand to run the back of his head.
"Are you okay—"
"Shut it, Solace."
Ghost king tensed at once, realizing what had slipped from his lips.
And Will was dumbfounded. "You..."
Ghost king cleared his throat. "About explaining—"
"You know who I am?!" Will exploded. "HOW?" Ghost king cringed at the volume of his voice, but Will was panicking, then something hit him: "Wait... if you know me—" He leaned closer. "Does that mean I know you?"
