CHAPTER 12: DID HE JUST SAY 'MOM'-?

It had been a few weeks since Nico had taken that day off.

He had needed it more than he thought, not just to give himself a rest physically, but watching movies with his mom all day after sleeping for a good 15 hours had given him a chance to unwind mentally.

He had barred thoughts from his other life from entering his mind.

But... all good things came to an end, right?

After his mom had left for work, Nico had snuck out, as usual.

The thing was, now his objective was different.

He knew his sister was alive now, but it was not the same Hazel he knew. Still, it was still surely her.

He initially thought about finding where she lived so he could have a serious talk and somehow make her realize that he was her VERY MUCH ALIVE brother.

Good news and bad news.

Good news?

Nico soon realized that he didn't need to search for Hazel.

She came to him.

Without fail.

Every night onwards.

Bad news?

She was out for his blood.

All Nico needed to do was put on his suit and step out into the cold night air, and she was there, ready to tear his head off.

Nico gave her what she wanted, he went out, every night, without fail.

Because then, he would be able to talk her out of this.

So far, he had had no improvement.

It became a routine, a practiced dance.

Every night, Nico would go out, he would wander the city idly, choosing different routes each time with no connection to the last (in case Hazel somehow figured out where he lived. He wanted her to come back home with him, but not like this, not when she was so... misled.).

Hazel, or 'Paragon' would show up, scream at him for killing her brother or more accurately, himself, and shoot down all his attempts at a conversation.

Then she would lunge at him and try to rip him to shreds or punch him to pulp with her cool/terrifying gemstone boxing gloves or try to (unintentionally) blind him with her brightly coloured costume, but wait- no- that was Sunshot's job.

Speaking of Sunshot.

He looked like he had no idea what to make of everything.

He too would show up, without fail but all he did was stand in the sidelines and watch as Hazel rained blows on Nico, who, while evading everything, never fought back. He knew he could win, but he couldn't even bear the thought of lifting a hand against his little sister, no matter how corrupted or misled she was.

Hazel paid Sunshot no heed, and Sunshot seemed conflicted, confused, probably about what he should do. So all he did was watch from the sidelines and make sure no late night bystander got hurt or no property was demolished.

Then the police would arrive and Nico would shadow travel away, his heart growing heavier and heavier.

That's how it's been for the past several weeks, like a broken tape, the same scenario playing over and over again.

School, on the other hand, wasn't that bad.

Nico managed to keep good grades, through all of this, he had to do it, for his mother, and he was proud of himself for it. He had met a few more people and actually made a few kinda friends.

And Will, aka Sunshot, was becoming something of a friend too. He was a hero, and Ghost king was a villain in his book, so it was natural for him to hate him. But unlike Nico, he didn't know his real identity, so Will was all smiles when Nico was around and stuck to him like glue.

Nico didn't push him away, that would be a little suspicious, but he always remained on his guard, he was always cautious. Will seemed like a nice, helpful guy but he was still Ghost king's arch nemesis. If Nico somehow let ANYTHING slip, it would be a disaster.

Nico didn't know how he felt about Sunshot anymore.

Nico was fine with Will Solace, but his other persona?

Nico didn't know.

Anyways, as he said, school wasn't that bad. He was even wondering if he should join a club or two.

*******************

Sunshot watched, unsure what to do, as Paragon and Ghost king danced around each other, locked in combat.

Sunshot didn't understand what was going on. Every night, he watched as Paragon all but tried to bite Ghostie's head off while the said super villain did nothing to fight back, just leaped around Paragon like a feather caught in the wind, evading her blows.

Ghost king tried to talk to Paragon while fighting, but she never waited long enough to hear what he had to say, cutting him short and screaming profanities at him.

Sunshot couldn't decide whether she was a good guy or a bad guy.

She was an enemy of Ghost king, fighting him and accusing him of killing someone, which Ghostie profusely denied.

Sunshot didn't like Ghost king, but it was hard to think that he would kill. Will wouldn't put it past him though, because well, he was a villain after all.

Does that make Paragon a hero? Fighting the bad guy?

But is he really a bad guy?

And what if he's not guilty of the crime he's being accused of?

Should Sunshot join forces with Paragon? And take Ghost king down once and for all?

But was that the right thing to do?

Was Paragon the hero here? Or the villain?

Will was so, so confused.

So all he could do was watch and make sure any bystanders were safe.

Social media was chaotic these days with the appearance of Paragon. Most people pegged her as a good guy, because she was against the town's common enemy, Ghost king.

But none of these civilians knew that their beloved Sunshot was once assaulted by this new hero too, and the one who saved his skin was the supposed enemy.

And how exactly was Sunshot supposed to feel about that?

URGH! So many questions!

He redirected his attention to the fight as Ghost king ducked to avoid a particularly harsh looking blow. Sunshot couldn't help glancing at the sheathed sword strapped to his back.

Not once had he seen the sword out of its sheath.

Will himself didn't wield a weapon, he wasn't that good with them, he relied on his powers. His suit came with a bow and a quiver of arrows but his aim was so bad that when he tried using it, he nearly shot himself. His hand to hand combat was good enough. At least... he could hold his own against Ghost king... but then again, Ghostie never fought back, so Will didn't exactly know...

Anyways...

Will knew that he had to stop the two of them from killing each other, and he couldn't pick a side.

He fired a beam of sunlight between them, and they sprang apart.

Paragon was panting and snapped her head around to fix her golden glare on him. Ghost king too fixated his eyes on him, but Sunshot couldn't see what his expression was.

"Stop this!" Will exclaimed, "this is getting nowhere!"

"Right?!" Ghost king agreed readily.

"NEVER!" Paragon screeched, her gold eyes burning with hatred, "I will get revenge!"

Ghost king groaned out loud, throwing up his gloved hands, "for the last time H- Paragon! I. Didn't. Do it!"

"I saw his BODY!"

"Okay FINE! So he's dead! But how can you accuse me of killing him?!"

That's... a fair point.... Will thought.

Paragon huffed, "I know what cuts left behind from your sword look like! And besides, my mother was there when you murdered him!"

Huh... Will mused, this is getting interesting but the second.

Ghost king remained silent for a few heart beats, as if processing what she just said.

Then he exploded, "WHAT—? MOM WAS THERE??"

Okay what-

The way he said 'mom'... he didn't say 'your mom' he said 'mom'. As in HIS mom.

Sunshot blinked hard, what was going on?

A/N: Hello my peeps! So what do you think? Is this a little slow paced? I promise you, stuff is on the way!
