Chapter 10: FIRST THE VASE, THEN THE ANKLE, NOW THIS?!
When Will woke up, his head was throbbing lightly, but not enough to hinder him.
What had happened?
Slowly, memories came flooding back.
He had been chasing Ghost king, when someone interrupted.
It had been a girl, what was her name now.... Ah yes! Paragon!
She had wanted to team up, but her intentions were too... vicious? Yeah.
And did the Ghost king claim to be her brother, and did she say her brother was dead?
All he could retain were some murky excuses of memories that didn't really piece the whole picture together. Either he was missing a few memories from when he had hit his head, or there was something bigger going on.
And speaking of Ghostie...
As Will's senses slowly returned, he realized he was in some kind of old warehouse. Then, he became aware that he was lying on top of something soft. Something that suddenly shifted a bit and Will nearly had a cardiac arrest.
He may or may not have let out a very unmanly, very un-superhero-y squeak, but that was for him to know and for all you readers to wonder for eternity.
(A/N: * moving to cover up the Will-shaped hole in the fourth wall* nothing to see here.... WILLIAM!!!!)
But if he DID, which he most certainly did not, he had a very valid reason.
He had been using a SUPERVILLAIN for a PILLOW.
Ghost king himself glared up at him. "Finally up? Good, now get off of me, I can't breathe."
Will fumbled up, a little confused as to why he hadn't already been thrown across the room, but tripped over his own feet and fell back on the said villain once more. Ghostie, surprisingly, didn't roll away, he stayed put, cushioning Will's fall.
Ghost king let out a pained grunt, then hissed at him, "what the actual- what is wrong with you?!"
'Sorry—sorry!" Will scrambled away.
Ghost king was lying on his back on the dusty floor, breathing hard, and glaring daggers at him. He gasped in relief as Will's weight lifted from his chest.
Will blinked at him for a moment frowning, as Ghostie slowly pushed himself up and shifted so that he was half sitting, half lying against the wall. His movements were sluggish, every action seemed to be requiring a lot of effort.
One would think that Will would take advantage of the situation and capture Ghost king, but...
Something made him stop, even he himself was uncertain what it was though, so don't ask him.
Ghost king let out a breath once he was somewhat comfortable, then caught Will's gaze, which had been tracking his every action.
"What the heck are you staring at?" Ghostie snapped, but his voice lacked its usual vigor and bite, like his heart wasn't really in it. Now, that was weird, considering that Ghost king, Will was sure, took great pleasure in misusing his talent of roasting people.
The guy dished out roasts like throwing knives! * shivers *
Anyway, Ghost king's half heartedly snappish words jolted Will out of his thoughts. He replied, "Where's Paragon?"
Ghostie shrugged lightly. "No idea."
Wow, real helpful, please note the sarcasm.
"Where are we?"
"Abandoned warehouse."
"I can see that... but how, pray tell, did we end up here?"
"Shadow traveled."
Will blinked. "Like that thing you do? Disappearing into the shadows?"
Ghost king gave a small nod.
"Why did you take me with you?" Will unearthed another question after a few seconds of silence, filled only with Ghosties irregular breathing.
Ghost king turned his face to look at Will, and even if Will couldn't see his face, he could FEEL the raised eyebrow.
"What? Did you want to die at her hands?"
It took Will a moment to clear things up.
Paragon had mercilessly kicked Sunshot, and he had smacked his head on the ground.
That's all Will remembered before blacking out and waking up here, on top of the nefarious Ghost king.
Oh... ooooh....
Will felt sick.
Did he just get saved by...
... no way.
Will honestly had no idea what to think of this guy now.
During the time Sunshot was out cold, Ghost king could have done a million things to him, but he had not (considering that Will was still alive and well), instead, he saved him, apparently.
Great! Now he was in debt to the guy he had been trying to hand over to prison for several years!
But Will still needed confirmation, he just couldn't... believe it. "You... saved me?"
Ghostie leveled him with another look, "you still have a head and four limbs. What do you think??"
"Okay... okay, fair point," Will uttered, mostly to himself, "but... why?"
"Don't get me wrong, I didn't do it for you. If you got squashed by those gemstone boxing gloves of hers, you'd leave a rather ugly stain on that rooftop. I didn't want the owners to suffer seeing such a bright horror."
MY GOD THIS GUY—
WILL COULD SCREAM RIGHT NOW.
Ghost king tilted his head back, sighing wearily.
Will frowned, his frustration still boiling, Ghost king's behavior was a little... off, disregarding the fact that he saved the hero.
Will, since he woke up, hadn't seen Ghostie move more than a few inches, pushing himself into a sitting position. That was weird, since Ghost king was a highly active person, skidding around Will like a shadow, quick and nimble.
Ghostie's shoulders sagged, his movement sleepy, his words lacking their usual force. Will frowned a little more. "Are you... hurt?"
"I'm fine," Ghost king snapped at once, "why do you care anyway?"
"I..." Will wondered, why did he care anyway?
Will bit his lip. "Um... because I'm a hero, it's my job to care?"
Ghostie scoffed, "Yeah Mary Sunshine, whatever."
Will's frown did not ease up. "Seriously though, are you okay?"
"I said I'm fine."
"You don't look like it."
"So?"
Will shift awkwardly, "let me help?"
"Hell no!" Ghost king shot at once, "why would I?"
"Um... consider it as pay back? For saving me?"
"I didn't do it for you."
"Just let me help!"
Ghostie let out a frustrated groan, "I'm fineeee. I'm just a little tired."
"A little?" Will asked dubiously, because Ghost king looked SPENT.
"Just leave me alone."
"Let me help you home?"
Ghost king snorted, "what? So you could walk me to the police station? Nice try!"
"I—" Will hadn't been intending to do that at all!
Oh god... he just realized, this situation was familiar.
Will's offer of help came out of instinctual concern for another human being, had Ghost king's been the same? Last night when he offered to help Will home?
"You can't move, can you?" Will prodded.
"I'm not answering that."
"Come on, let me help!"
"NO! Just go away!"
Will sighed, exasperated, and opened his mouth but Ghostie beat him to it, "I don't want your help, okay? Just leave me ALONE!"
"But—"
"Ugh!" Ghost king groaned, "You're so ANNOYING!"
Then he drew the shadows around himself, letting out a soft breath out of sheer effort.
Then once more, he dissolved into the shadows, leaving Will alive in the abandoned warehouse, wondering what the heck he just witnessed.
