Eleven

My face was still healing from the shot, but I had already left the hospital and was blocks away from any doctors, police, or crime families. The sounds of sirens filled the air and crowds of people ran around in the chaos. I could feel my unstable molecules straining to reconnect with themselves and my systems slowly repairing. This was taking much longer than usual and at the worst possible time. I used my hood to hide the less attractive side of my face and kept running. My mind was having trouble processing everything that happened and this concerned me. I made my way towards a relatively empty parking lot and had what could most closely be described as a panic attack.

My breathing quickened and I began to feel paranoid. There was another one like me, one who knew my name and what I could do. How was this even possible? I clenched my hand into a fist and punched a hole into a nearby lamppost. It dented in, but didn't fall over. How had I not noticed Evelyn was like me that whole time? Maybe my sensors weren't working correctly again or perhaps I just wasn't looking hard enough. One thing that I knew for sure was that I should have stayed and made sure Evelyn had died from my gunshots. My emotions had made me careless, I wasn't even sure why I had these feelings in the first place. I took a slow breath and regained my composure. Whoever this other android was, I would not let her have control over me. I needed answers but had no idea where to start.

Fortunately, fate was kind and sent me a message, or more accurately Delilah Ramos sent me one. I received the incoming signal from my command key telling me to return to her home immediately for a mission update. I was not looking forward to this as technically I had failed her mission. I was no closer to eliminating Yokozuna than I had been, but now there was another rival who killed one of my two potential informants. Perhaps my mission would change once I discussed Evelyn with her. Suddenly, my mind began racing again and I connected mental dots that I had not seen before.

I had not been able to see through or detect things from Evelyn, presumably because of the material she was created with or her energy interference. However, this was not the only time something like this happened to me. I realized I got the same reaction when I tried to look through the second floor of Delilah's home. I could see there was an upstairs section, but the rooms were invisible to me. I began to realize the sensations were nearly identical in both situations. Perhaps returning to Delilah's home would give me some of the answers I needed.

Of course, before I could leave, another unexpected thing happened. My private cell phone lit up and I saw I had missed a call from an unknown number. Well, the phone said it was unknown but I knew it by heart. It belonged to Max, but unfortunately I could not talk or go see him at the moment. I just had to hope he was safe and talk to him when I was less distracted.

I wasn't running at my full capacity, my energy was still drained from fighting and healing and my systems were not at 100 percent. I decided to make my way back to Delilah's in a more ordinary mode of transportation. I rode a city bus. This was not a good idea as I was already quite aggravated and on edge, but I did not feel like walking back and forth again. This concerned me as well, I was beginning to choose preferences over logic much more often recently.

There were several times on the bus ride that I wanted to break my rule about not hurting innocents, but I restrained myself. These humans were loud, rude, and kept bumping into me almost as if they were trying to annoy me on purpose. However, I didn't feel they needed to be harmed for that, and besides that I still needed the bus to get home. After a twenty minute ride that felt like three hours, I saw the block Delilah lived on. I pushed my way through the crowd and quickly made my way to the house and waited.

"You can just walk in, Eve," Delilah said as she opened the door and gestured for me to come inside,

"My orders were to return and debrief me, not stand in my front yard."

"I apologize, Delilah. I was preoccupied and am not thinking correctly." I replied and lowered my hood to show my cheek that was still healing. I joined her inside and sat on a couch as Miguel played with his toys.

"I did not order you to think, I ordered you to do as I say." Delilah replied firmly.

"Now, maybe you can explain why Osaka Ibushi and Matsui Kozawa are dead? Have you even found Yokozuna?" she asked, clearly irritated.

"I was unaware of Matsui's death. However, I know fully well why Osaka is no longer with us." I said and made eye contact with Delilah. I knew Matsui's death was no coincidence.

"It's all over the news, Primera. You basically nuked a hospital and shot up a bank just to get at Matsui." Delilah replied and turned on the T.V. to several news station to prove her point.

"Massive shoot out at major local hospital... Several casualties with bodies left along different floors... Suspects still at large."

One of the reporters stated.

"Bank heist turned into a mass murder... No witnesses left and no footage of assailant who stopped a known crime lord but then opened fire on the rest of the bank..."

The other reporters said.

"That was not me, Delilah Ramos." I stated after a moment.
"I never kill for free, and I do not care about witnesses as much. However, this tells me much about the one who did all this. Her name is Evelyn, and she stopped me from retrieving information from Osaka and apparently Matsui as well."

"She stopped you?" Delilah replied with an expression of disbelief,
"How is that even possible? Do you know how much money was spent on you for you to be stopped by some random girl?"

"She was not a random girl." I said and stood up to face Delilah. My face had healed properly and I was feeling much better than before.
"She is like me, perhaps even better, if that is possible. She also apparently has no restraint on killing innocents."

"What are you talking about? You're not the only android?" She replied, her voice a harsh, loud whisper. She was losing her control and so was I.

"Apparently not, and I need answers about Evelyn just as much as you do. After all, I do suspect that you'll want me to protect Miguel and yourself from her." I replied, neither of us backing down.

"Of course, that's what all this is all about anyway. Where do you expect to get answers from?" She asked.

"In my battle with her she was able to hide herself from my scans. This has only happened consistently one other time, and that is with the upstairs section of your house. I need to see what is up there, Delilah."

"No! That is my father's work space and on his deathbed he made it quite clear he did not want anything there to be disturbed. I'm not sure why you can't see through the walls but I am not happy that you tried. I thought we had an understanding on privacy." She said calmly, as she knelt down and played with Miguel like we were having an everyday conversation.

"Delilah I urge you to alter your command. We both need answers and this is the only place I know of to start." I said and began walking towards the stairs.

"Stop!" Delilah commanded and used her phone to enter orders with my command key. I slowed down and then stopped walking completely, knowing I was ordered to not set foot up the stairs. I grew angry, but I knew disobeying direct orders always had a negative impact on me.

"Change your command, Delilah. Let me try and figure out what is going on. Your father was a brilliant man, maybe he knew of a way to stop people like me." I said calmly.

"I can't allow it. My father did not ask for much, he provided for us the best he could under the circumstances. I do not want to go against his last wishes."

My mind began racing and sorting through all the information I could to find a loophole to her orders. One trick that I learned was making myself believe I was carrying out one order so I could disobey another. It was quite useful in several situations, including now. Given everything I knew about Delilah Ramos, it was not hard to find a way around her orders. I simply had to carry out the one order she held above all.

"I understand your concerns, however you are now stopping me from protecting not only you, but Miguel as well. As you say, I must put his safety above anyone else's." I stated plainly and I felt my systems accepting my decision. Once this happened, I was not sure if there was an order that could stop me. It was almost as if I was making my own choices, which was a liberating feeling for a computer. I looked Delilah in the eyes and then walked up the stairs, much to her disapproval.

"You have to stop, I order you!" she said and held Miguel in her arms. The child could sense the tension and curled up to be protected by her.

"I am listening to your orders quite clearly." I replied and reached the top of the stairs. There was a locked door that seemed out of place, an addition to the house no doubt. I easily broke it open and continued on my way to find some answers.
