Chapter Twelve
For the last few days, Ghost has been incredibly jumpy.
He had done his best to hide it, of course, he didn't want Toast to worry. Though, he was pretty sure it was obvious.
He couldn't exactly help it, knowing about this demon inside his own head kept him in edge at all times. He got even less sleep than before, and could barely pay attention to anything. If someone in the room even shifted slightly, Ghost would flinch, unsure what exactly he was expecting to happen. He felt like he was going crazy.
It didn't help that the demon started talking to him.
It had revealed its name to be Jimmy-Ghost didn't really want to call him that though, it felt weird-and he never shut up. It was honestly getting to be more annoying to him than scary.
One day, Ghost and Toast were working on their case. Ghost wasn't able to pay much attention, not that it mattered now he knew who the killer really was, because Jimmy kept talking and talking and talking.
"You know, Ghostie," he started, using the annoying nickname he had picked up. It reminded Ghost too much of Maxwell, and he shivered at the thought each time he said it. "We should make a deal, y'know?" He started, and Ghost rolled his eyes-immediately regretting it and making himself smaller in an attempt to silently apologize.
"C'mon, don't be like that!" Jimmy chuckled. "Hear me out, alright?" When Ghost said nothing in return, Jimmy took it as an invitation to speak. "Well.. if you'll help me out, let me take control over you without fighting back.. we could have power together. We could share it! It would be in both of our best interests. If you'd just help me out..."
"No!" Ghost suddenly shouted aloud, immediately covering his mouth with his hand and looking over at Toast, who stared at him in confusion. He gave an awkward smile. "Uh.. I'm sorry. Trying not to fall asleep over here." He chuckled, and Toast frowned.
"You really haven't been getting enough rest, love." Toast looked at him in concern, and Ghost frowned too, shrugging as he looked down.
"Got too much on my mind." He spoke quietly.
"Ha, more like too much in your mind."
"Shut up." Ghost thought back. He heard something faint in his mind, almost as if Jimmy were muttering something under his breath, and then he fell silent. Ghost sighed in relief.
"Do you want to talk about it?" Toast offered, moving to sit closer to his boyfriend and taking a hold of his hand gently. "I'm always right here for you, no matter what, love. I won't ever leave you."
Ghost winced, looking at the ground for a moment before plastering a smile on his face to assure Toast he was fine. "I'll live, Johnny. I promise, I'll try my best to get more sleep tonight." He knew he couldn't tell Toast about this, and he felt awful about it. Especially since he was so kind, and always offered to help him.
He wouldn't care so much about me if he knew what I did. No-what Jimmy did. Ghost thought, sighing once again and moving to lean against his boyfriend. "Thank you, though." He whispered. "I love you."
"Of course, I love you too. Like I said, I'll never leave you." Toast pressed a kiss to his forehead. They say like that for a while, and Ghost had dozed off until Toast shook him.
"Why don't you go lie down? I'll work on this for now, you aren't going to be able to concentrate. Take a nap, love." Toast told him, and Ghost yawned as he considered.
"Yeah.. I probably should." Ghost muttered. The only reason he really agreed was because he couldn't look over the case anymore with what he knew. Otherwise, he would have stayed and helped-it's not like Jimmy would let him sleep anyways.
It wasn't long after Ghost was by himself that Jimmy showed up to talk once again. "So, about my offer?" He questioned, and Ghost groaned.
"I told you, no! I won't take your offer, I'm not an idiot. Now shut up and let me sleep!" Ghost thought back to him. Jimmy laughed.
"Someone's getting grumpy." He suddenly sounded much more serious, and sinister. "But if you're really not going to take my offer, I'll just have to do this myself. I promise you this, Johnny Ghost: I. will. break. you."
Ghost was still unable to sleep for the next 24 hours.
