Old Friends, New Faces
Evil In His Eyes - Re-Edit
Chapter One. Thomas's POV.
I pulled my business coat closer to my body as I made my way down the sidewalk, after I had parked my car in the lot next to the large law firm building where I will be working for - who knows how long?
I had just returned from my time spent, studying and working for a man named Benjamin Franklin in France only a week prior to today. I had spent that week applying to numerous Law Firm companies and unpacking into my new penthouse apartment I had gotten myself.
I sucked in a quick breath and shivered slightly as New York's October chilly air filled my lungs, as I grew closer and closer to the building. After spending so much time in France's warm environment for so long, I'm not adjusted to the coldness of the states yet during winter. Don't think I ever will be.
As I walked down the sidewalk, I noticed a large amount of others out on the streets as well. Not that surprising though. New York's always busy - even at seven AM.
Everything's been busy for me though. With moving and transfers of jobs. It's been exhausting. I haven't had a chance to see any of my old friends, and there's no point in talking to my family. If I could even call them that though. Guessing that I haven't talked to any of my "family" since before I went to college.
Seems like they just couldn't accept the fact that I'm gay. It's difficult to live with, but it's been that way for ten years now. And I've done far better on my own. And now, I'm actually happy for once in my life...
Besides, it is nice to be back in New York. Home. Not that France won't be missed., because that's simply not true The time I spent there could never be replaced. The ladies, the food. Irreplaceable. But home is something that I've been gone from for far too long.
I stopped walking when I was standing in front of the two large glass doors of the new office I will be working at. I have a similar job - almost the same one but different policies - as I had while working un Mr. Franklin.
To work on the more important court cases we would deal with, keep track of peoples records and over all - all records of the firm, as well as help with finances of the Firm. So a little bit of everything in a way. Nothing I'm not used to though.
I let out a breath I didn't know I was holding and watch the cloud of air float away from my lips. I grip the cold, metal door handle and begin to pull it open. No point in waiting any longer.
When I pulled open the door, a warm gust of air blew over me as I stepped inside the office. I let it fall closed behind me as I walk further into the office. Not many people are here to be honest. Only a few by the secretary desk as well as some others by offices. I walked towards the secretary's desk and glanced down to the girls name tag on her chest. Sally Hemings.
"Good morning sir, how can I help you today?" She asked sweetly, brushing a piece of her stray, curly black hair from her face. She had darker skin than I did, and a beautiful smile. No wonder she was chosen to greet people as they entered the building. I cleared my throat slightly and stood taller.
"I'm Thomas Jefferson. I have a meeting with Mr. George Washington to talk about my new position here." I said, strong and stern. Her eyes widened slightly as she looked up at me before typing something into her computer.
"Oh Mr. Jefferson! Hello, the whole office has been buzzing about the new secretary that will help run things over here, under Washington. Yes, he's in his office right now. Third floor, office five. Ya can't miss it. Elevators down that way!" She said turning to point to a corridor in between some office doors.
"Thank you." I said with a nod and slowly began walking down the hallway. I saw rows upon rows of desks filled with papers . I saw a few people who were chatting with other coworkers.
As I walked down the hall, I saw a room that was off to the left of the hallway. A Breakroom with snacks and a coffee machine. As I neared the room, I could hear a rather loud conversation going on.
"Alexandre, I don't understand why you stay with him. Look at yourself! You look as if you're dying! You're way too skinny, Alexandre. You need to start eating up and-" A strong french accent filled my ears.
It sounded as if English was their second language. I could tell because, my french accent sounds odd to some first speaking french people due to me learning French as my second, maybe third language.
"Laf. Stop. I'm perfectly fine. Now will you drop it? We're at work, what if someone hears you? They'll think Charlie is a bad guy." Another voice said. Quieter, meaker. It had some sort of distant accent to it, but I couldn't distinguish it.
"People already think he is a bad guy, Alex! Look at yourself! It's ridiculous!" A feminine voice added. A familiar, feminine voice.
I looked through the doorway and saw a dark - but a bit lighter - skinned man that had curly, bouncy hair pulled up in a bun. Some scruff on his face as well, wearing a white button down with some black pants.
He was standing tall next to a much smaller, tanned skin... male? I couldn't quite tell from the angle I was standing at. They had messy black hair and seemed to be pretty thin for their size. Wearing a white button up with what seemed to be black skinny jeans. Whoever they were, they seemed to be very unprofessional.
And lastly, a caramel skinned women in a pink button up shirt with a black skirt that went down to her knees. Curly blackish - brown hair pooled over one of her shoulders. A frown on her lips. Eyes filled with worry. No, was that...
"Angelica? Angelica Schuyler?" I asked with a smirk beginning to tug on my lips. I leaned against the doorway as I saw her - as well as the other two she was standing with - spin around in surprise to look at me.
She looked confused for a few seconds before her eyes widened in shock. She smiled just as brightly before walking towards me, opening her arms as she did.
"Oh my God, if it isn't Thomas Jefferson. Back from France I see. How Franklin treat ya'? Guessing that you're going to be George's new assistant Secretary of the Firm, I say he helped you out?" She said, I scoffed and hugged her. Sighing in content of seeing my old High School friend.
"Yeah, yeah. How are your sisters?" I asked pulling away from her. She gasped and began to gush about how Eliza had a girlfriend who was thinking about proposing to her, and how Margarita is still as loud and boisterous as they had been in High School.
"Umm, Angie? Who's this?" The tall male asked, an eyebrow raised on their face. The smaller man - I could see that they had some peach fuzz on their chin - also looking confused, but stayed silent.
"Oh! My apologies, Thomas, meet Marquis de Lafayette - one of Mr. Washington's datemates, he has two - and Alexander Hamilton! One of the most opinionated, loudmouth bothers you'll ever meet!" She said ruffling the smaller man's - Alexander's - head. Who flinched slightly and pulled back from her. Causing Angelica to give him a look I couldn't quite interpret.
"Nice to meet you Monsieur Thomas. So your Angelica's first and only boyfriend she mentions?" Lafayette said, a coy smile on their lips as he reached his hand out to shake hands with me. Which I returned smirking at the slightly flushed Angelica.
"You weren't kidding when you said you were Asexual, huh?" I teased. She chuckled and shook her head.
"Well, it wouldn't make sense for me to date a gay man." She fired back causing me to throw my head back and let out a loud laugh.
"God - when you told me you were doing law, I didn't know we would end up being coworkers. I mean - I know Jemmy works here, I can't believe he left out that you work here as well. Speaking of Jemmy, where's his office? I'll visit him after I speak to Mr. Washington." I said, standing straight again.
"Oh, yeah he should be near Washington's office. Same floor. I'll have Alexander show you where since he needs to speak to Washington too, right Alex?" Angelica asked, looking down at the smaller man. Alex jumped at the sudden mention of himself and looked at Angelica, then me.
"Yeah, fine. C'mon. Later guys." He mumbled, me barely even hearing him.
"Bye Lexi. Remember to hear him out!" Angelica howlered as we walked out of the breakroom and down the hallway to the elevator. I heard Alex grumbling to himself as he pressed the button for the third floor.
We stood in silence as we waited for the elevator's doors to open so we could step in. I kept find my gaze drifting down to the tan skinned man, next to me. He had dark bags under his eyes as well as a tired look in them.
Jesus, when was the last time that man took a break?
When hearing the 'bing' sound, my head snapped away from Alexander, and forwards towards the metal elevator doors. We stepped in and he pressed the third button once again. When the doors to the elevator shut again, I decided to break the silence.
"So... how long have you worked for Mr. Washington?" I asked. His eyes glanced up at me before he sighed.
"Since I got out of college. He's my father, so he wanted me to come work under his as his Secretary of the Firm. Basically, his right hand man." He said monotonically.
"Oh, well I guess that makes me his left hand man, because he offered me that same position, but to work alongside you of course." I joked lightly. Alexander just rolled his eyes at my comment and I took that as a sign to drop the conversation, letting the elevator fill with silence.
This was gonna be a long day.
