When Camille Renault left her hometown in France to study abroad in America for a year at 17, she had no idea what was in store for her. The picture perfect San Fernando Valley was turning out to be anything but the longer she stayed there, with her first day of classes in the new country ruined by a feud between two rival karate dojos that spiraled out of control, taking their innocent classmates as collateral. A massive brawl of students led to one guy hospitalized and one eventually imprisoned, which wasn't exactly the welcome that she had anticipated.

She was no stranger to the competitiveness of karate, her younger sister Zoë once having been on a path to win against the best of the best in France. And maybe she would return to form in the future, having rage quit the sport after an unfair call that kept her from moving on to Worlds qualifiers.

It hadn't taken Camille long to find a gymnastics club in the States, one that happened to be located next to a karate dojo. She was thrilled, or at least she was before she was warned by the daughter of her host family to stay away from anyone within two degrees of separation that trains in the sport. The gym was small, but it was more than enough to continue her training while abroad. Time had slipped away on her first day of practice, scared half to death when she nearly hit a boy her age with the door from the gym she left at nearly midnight. But he'd introduced himself with a smile, and it was hard for her to believe that Robby Keene was capable of such monstrous things that she'd witness soon enough.

She never fully could fathom it, and maybe that was how she found herself falling— okay, maybe that was a poor choice of words— in love with him before she found herself back on the opposite side of the world.

When it was announced that her sister's dojo received a bid for the Sekai Taikai in Barcelona, Camille was jumping at the chance to go and watch Zoë compete against the best in the world. She just wasn't expecting her old friends from California to be competing as well. Camille thought that she'd be cool about it, deeming the boy from her past as out of sight and out of mind. But for some reason after months apart, she was still drawn to him like a moth to a flame. Something about him was magnetic, her eye of the hurricane as their worlds collapsed around them in Barcelona.

At the end of the day, it always seemed to come back to karate. It was strange how the sport seemed to bring the best and the worst into Camille's life, but she wouldn't have it any other way.
