Was I Just A Fool
It is the night of the Championship game, where Natalie has to be more focused than ever. The band played for a while and stopped.
"Everyone now please rise for our national anthem. Singing for us tonight, we have a very special guest. From Nashville, our very own Tammy Thompson!"
The three had their jaw dropped, Natalie started staring at Robin, as she turned her head to look at someone. Out of curiosity, she looked up to find Steve with some girl.
"Go, Tammy!"
"We love you, Tammy!"
♪ O say, can you see? By the dawn's early light... ♪
"Told you, Muppet," Steve whispered.
"Ok she does sound like a Muppet"
Natalie let out a chuckle, she quicky covered her mouth so she didn't burst out laughing. Natalie heard another voice speak it was a girl's voice. Her smile quickly dropped
"Oh my god totally- she sounds like Kermit"
"I was probably thinking Miss Piggy"
And not only that, but Robin was also talking to her. Natalie felt her teeth clench and her heart slowly breaking. She hasn't felt this way ever since she saw Steve and Robin hold hands. Of course it was a misunderstanding. But she is a girl? Why is Robin talking to her! And she is pretty too! But at the same time, Natalie wanted to be her.
"I used to think she was good because I had this massive crush"
Now why was she telling her this - only they knew her secret. If only she had the guts to tell her, maybe Robin won't be gawking at some other girl. Or maybe Robin never liked her at all! Natalie felt like a fool, thinking otherwise that Robin Buckley would fall for someone like her. They are two girls after all. Luckily, she wasn't paying attention and turned her head to her.
"I'm sorry-"
"Um- we -we- um- took a massively hard class together - we were - we were - in Mrs. Clicks class together- yeah"
And she sounded nervous - nervous - she couldn't believe it what she was watching. Natalie felt like crying, but she can't leave, it's the championship game
"Eh- um sorry where you asking me a question"
" No" The girl shook her head with a smile.
"Um ok"
She stopped looking at her- and focused on Tammy. Natalie let out a shaky breath and closed her eyes, trapping in the tears from falling, the people in her row looked concerned, so she just put on a fake smile. Natalie couldn't focus on the game at all, her mind clouded with the thoughts of Robin and the red head girl. Now she understood how Peppermint Patty felt when talking to Linus, that all she wanted to do was to cry. Natalie felt this burning ache in her chest, she put her hand on her uniform, trying to stop it.
She takes in a deep breath and closes her eyes, counting in her head from 1 to 4. Natalie quickly opened her eyes to find Lucas on the field, he's not on the bench but on the field. That caused a sense of relief. He passed the ball over to Jason as he made the shot. The crowd went wild, but why wasn't Natalie in the mood to celebrate!
For the past few minutes, she actually payed attention to the game watching the ball go in and out. The couch called Time Out, that was their cue to start playing again. Natalie tried to keep a steady beat. The team started to discuss after a while, and they made their choice. Jason goes in first and grabbed the ball but ended up missing. Lucas goes in next, and shoots the ball, everyone stood up in anticipation.
The ball slowly enters the hoop. He did it, he made the shot.
The crowd jumped up and down, as the basketball team lifts up Lucas. Natalie just clapped with a small smile on her face. The game was finally over. She passed by Lucas
"Hey, man you did great"
"Thanks"
"I knew you can do it"
Just then one of the basketball players pulled him away.
"Ay mijita"
She sees her mom there with flowers in her hand, Natalie put her fake smile on her face.
"Gracias" (Thanks)
She went and pulled her daughter into a tight embrace.
"I'm so proud of you"
At the moment, Natalie felt like crying, she may be proud now, but if she found out her secret, would she still be proud now. A ton of what ifs scenarios ran through Natalies mind. What if she doesn't love me anymore, what if I'm not her daughter but a freak, what if she doesn't accept me, what if - what if!
"So, what should do to celebrate, we could go watch a movie, or go somewhere nice like Enzos"
"Thanks, mama, but I'm tired. Been a long day"
She saw the smile on her mother's face drop, she felt bad.
"Oh- well, I'll see you at home"
Natalie walked to her car, feeling extreme guilt inside. In reality, she is just scared, scared that someone is going to find out. Sure, Natalie can tell Steve, but then he's going to tell Robin, and everything will be a disaster. She wanted to tell her herself, but couldn't find the word to do so, and now it's too late, Robin has her eyes on another girl. She drove through the streets of Hawkins, just as Jessies Girl by Rick Springfield started playing. Natalie tapped her fingers on the steering wheel, as the song continued to play, she felt her teeth clench.
The thought of Robin and the red head girl enter her mind again. Her hand squeezes on the steering wheel tightly. All she thought off was her smile, and how she sounded nervous talking to her. Natalie was desperate, just as desperate as Rick is singing about being Jessies Girl. If only she wasn't so afraid.
She let out a sigh and turned off the radio as the song ended. Natalie slammed the car door and entered the house. It is empty and quiet. She put the flowers in a vase and added some water aside. Natalie went into the bathroom and sat down on the floor. She put her head down on her knees as she scurries though her messy curls. Natalie couldn't take it much longer.
She started to cry, letting out the tears she's been holding. Is this how it felt to be left with a broken heart. Is this how it felt to long for someone that you can't have, Is this a sin? Natalie should have seen this coming; Robin Buckley never liked her; it was all just a summer phase. Robin Buckley was her silver spring. She can already hear the slurs in her mind. Queer, that word sounded so ugly.
She knows Steve is a changed man, but there are other people out there that could call her that and even worst, beat her up. Natalie heard a knock on the door-
"Natalie, Natalie estas aqui?"( Are you there?)
She lifted her head up and wiped the tear in her eye. No response
"Natalie, Natalie, NATALIA"
No response
"NATALIA WHEELER OPEN UP THIS DOOR RIGHT NOW"
She started to shiver and felt her arm tense up. Her breath started to quicken, it's her own mother, why does she feel so scared. Natalie jumped as her mom opened the door, just to find her own daughter crying. It broke her heart seeing how distant she's been, Kamila can remember vividly last year when she heard about the mall fire. She was so scared, so scared that her daughter didn't make it out alive but there she was, with cuts and bruises on her face. ONE thing for sure, she was alive and that's all she cared about.
"Hey, what happened"
Natalie couldn't even look her in the eye, she let out a sniffle
"Que te pasa?"(What happened)
Nothing-
"You know you can talk to me? What's going on"
Still nothing-
" I hate seeing you cry, so please just tell me?"
Natalie let out a shaky breath, her voice started to quiver
"Promise....you won't get mad at me"
"Of course, I'm not going to get mad- just talk to me"
Natalie just stayed quiet for a moment; she can't believe she about to reveal her deepest secret. It could go two ways, one she accepts her or the worst possible outcome, she kicks her out. Natalie took in a deep breath.
"Have you... ever fallen in...love... with
A girl
"Someone...you couldn't have "
"Oh-Oh - who hurt you"
Her mom brushes her hair to the side.
No response
"Don't tell me it was Eddie Munson; your cousin looks up to him"
Natalie shook her head, since Jonathan left, Eddie is basically her only friend. She feels comfortable around him, but not even he knows her secret.
"No not him"
Here it goes the big reveal
" No es un hombre" (It's not a boy)
The room turned silent; more tears started to spill out her eyes
" If you want, I can leave, just say the word and I can go"
"No-"
"It doesn't matter if you like girls or not, i just want you to talk to me"
"Youre not mad..."
"No-"
"I want you to feel safe here. You know when the fire happened, I thought I would never see you again. But here you are-right in front of me"
Natalie pulled her mom into a tight embrace and continued to cry. She rubbed her back reassuringly.
"There, there"
"I'm right here, I'm right here"
She didn't want to let go; this is all Natalie ever wanted- acceptance. Her tears is wetting her shirt. Her mamas' hugs were always the most comforting. After a while, the two let go of each other
"Hey at least I don't have to worry about you getting pregnant"
Natalie let out a chuckle, a genuine one
" There you go- that's more like it"
" Te amo-"
" Te Amo Tambien mijita"
A/N : YAY COMING OUT SCENCE- Anyway sorry for the delay, I was on vacation plus now since I have one more week off, I can write more.
