*The Family Cliches

Before I get on with the chapter, let's take a minute to appreciate how adorable the gif above is. I can't even comprehend how nice all of them look and happy in their very rare family moments.

Kay, now let's begin.

***

Since I have done nearly all the cliche plots, I believe this is going to be the last of them so I am making it a family one in which I include the cliches in fanfics about every specific family in TVD. Hence it is kinda an overall chapter which will summarize all the cliches.

I might make a Stefan x OC plot chapter too but it depends since it requires a lot of time to read books and find cliche points (research requires a lot of time). And frankly these days I do not have much time at all.

The results for my Grade 11 exams are due next month and soon I will be giving exams for Grade 12 probably in April but trust me, the pressure starts building from just now. And after that the humongous headache of universities and aptitude tests awaits...

Yeah, to cut a long story short, life is kinda shitty right now.

But enough of my rambling (I know everyone hates author notes) so let's get on with the chapter. I will state how characters in these families are portrayed in fanfics.

Gilbert Family:

1. Elena usually comes off as a bitch with insecurity issues who just can't choose between the Salvatore brothers.

2. Jeremy is nearly always ignored and if he is kept in the story, it is just to show how much if a depressed, troubled and damaged kid he is.

3. Miranda and Grayson Gilbert never really exist because nearly all fanfics start from the time after the Wickery Bridge accident.

4. Jenna is usually portrayed as a mothering creature but the downside to it all is that she is never really shown to have feelings other than her concern for the Gilberts.

5. John Gilbert either doesn't exist and if he does, then he is just a mean person who can not sort out his priorities and who always chickens out or rather becomes the evil guy of the series.

Salvatore Family:

1. Damon is usually portrayed as a reckless, insolent brat who takes pleasure in doing all the wrong stuff and is just as heartless as can be.

2. Stefan is portrayed as a kind caring, goody two shoes brother. He is way too sweet, too nice and too good to be true. Or in some cases he is portrayed as a whiny kid who cries all the time.

3. Lily Salvatore is really non existent and so is Guiseppe because you never find fanfics about human Damon and Stefan (as in ten or twelve years old? Idk, even if they are human they are usually portrayed in the 1864 era).

4. If Lily Salvatore does exist, she is shown as a cowering woman afraid of her husband who can not do anything for the sake of her children and is basically a coward.

5. Guiseppe is shown as a lousy father who is way too abusive and who certainly would not care if his kids were thrown in the garbage.

Mikaelson Family:

1. Esther and Mikael either do not exist or just turn up to cause havoc in the story.

2. Klaus is either portrayed as a power hungry, Hitler mindset individual or a tough person with a lot of inner hidden feelings (depends on the author).

3. Elijah is nearly always the bookworm type of person, a sage who knows a lot about everything and who is way too respectful of others.

4. Rebekah's insolent and petulant side is more focused on in fanfics and seems to be magnified since she is always portrayed as a bratty spoiled kid who falls in love with everyone way too easily and when gets dumped, turns into a horrific monster.

5. Kol's flirtatious tendencies are much magnified and if he is ever shown in the story, it is just Kol with a smirk on his face and bat slung over the shoulder probably turning up after causing a huge massacre.

6. Finn, Freya, Henrik etc do not exist.

7. Hayley is quite similar to Elena and I really don't get why is that. Just because she loved Elijah but made a mistake with Klaus doesn't mean she deserves all the hate.

8. Hope Mikaelson was certainly not just a mistake since she would turn out to be the best thing to ever happen to the Original Hybrid. But the aspect is not clearly highlighted in fanfics.

Bennett Family:

1. Bonnie is just portrayed as a magical negro stereotype (refer to Don't No 7: Character Representation).

2. Grams is either dead in fanfics or just shown as an old lady who knows most of the fantastic things but is really not given much attention to.

3. Bonnie is often seen always talking about her Grams and how she says things about her being a witch and all.

4. The only time when the Bennetts do turn up in fanfics is when they have to perform a tracking spell or any other sort of spell such as lifting of the tomb's enchantments, communicating with the dead etc.

Donovan Family:

1. Mr and Mrs Donovan... Wait who were they again? Because they are really never mentioned. It seems as if Matt and Vicki lived at an orphanage then turned up at Mystic Falls just out of nowhere.

2. Matt is portrayed as a nice, sweet guy but he is also added to the list of depressed damaged kids and never really given any stand alone scene except that in Mystic Grill where he has to serve the drinks.

3. Vicki is pretty much shown as a sl*t, excuse my illicit choice of words, but yeah really that is just what we see Vicki as. No one ever describes why she was like this and her character is never deeply explored.

Forbes Family:

1. Sheriff Forbes is shown as a working mother who doesn't have enough time for her daughter due to which they suffer a rift in their relationship.

[Honestly, this is not true. Liz Forbes was an amazing person and both Caroline and Liz were quite close, I just can't understand why authors so love the neglected child and busy parent phenomena].

2. Caroline can be portrayed in multiple ways. Either she is portrayed like Rebekah, i.e a girly person who throws herself on anyone and everyone, or she is portrayed as a person with a non existent personality.

Saltzman Family:

1. Alaric is shown with a conflicting personality, a person who suffers from a lot of mood swings and who can not get over his wife's death so is either shown getting wasted or in other cases teaching history at school but that's just the minimal part of his presence in fanfics.

2. Isobel either never exists or just shows up to cause a major havoc. No fanfic has ever been written in which her human life was explored or her character was justly analyzed.

Lockwood Family:

1. Mason Lockwood is either the villain or the person who just has one thing on his mind: how to protect Tyler from the werewolf curse.

2. Carol is portrayed as an elite class woman who cares only for status and kitty parties and who is always arranging events such as balls or fund raisings etc.

3. Tyler is pretty much shown as a bully and a jerk. And along with Matt and Jeremy is forced into the list of depressed and damaged kids.

[In reality though, Tyler was a bit of a jerk but along with that he wasn't as shallow as shown in the fanfics, he actually cared for people and didn't want to trigger the curse on him by hurting, more specifically killing, someone].

And that's pretty much it. Hope you guys liked it and thanks a lot for being with me from the beginning to the end. But don't worry, this book is not ending just now. I have a lot of other things up my sleeve such as a few more Don'ts of writing Fanfics plus I might get some review requests as well.

So in simple words, stay tuned for the next update.

And no worries, when the book ends officially I'll let you know so you can easily remove it from your libraries, without any further ado.
