DON'T NO 21: Lack Of Realistic Approach

In the never ending list of the Don'ts of writing, this can be considered as the most annoying (for me at least) and yet ever persistent one around.

Lack of Realistic Approach or in simple words, an unrealistic concept/story/scene/reaction etc, is a major let down of writing fiction be it an original one or a fandom associated one.

Now what would you really call a realistic approach? Let's focus on it a bit closely.

Being realistic does not necessarily mean writing about  real life and real people going through their normal everyday routines. Being realistic means to write your story in a manner that people can relate to and which is considered as a quite believable action by most. This logic applies nearly in all genres except Fantasy, Horror and AUs.

Nowadays, writers focus on a lot other stuff such as love interests, addictions, disorders etc etc instead of giving a believable touch to the story. And as it continues, their writing turns to flow out of track and edges more towards the bizarre cliff of nonsense literature (I mean come on you are not writing an Alice In Wonderland story, you're writing a fanfiction on a specific fandom like TVD  which does not categorize in the Fantasy or Nonsense genre).

And yet the point is that most readers do not usually notice it. This is what bothers me most that if an author has included a scene in a particular chapter which is completely out of the blue and unrealistic, still readers are going all oohing and aahing over it and a thousand emojis are visible straight up in the comments sections.

I know what you all are thinking right now. Yup, I know you're thinking that if readers don't even bother about this then why am I wasting my time (along with yours as well) and churning out a seemingly unnecessary chapter?

Well because this book isn't here to just tell you what readers want you to put in a book but also to tell you what should go in a book.

***

For example, let's take up a very common scene that exists in every single fanfic on Wattpad. Every single one of them. The only difference is that it is very seldom portrayed correctly.

I'm talking about the scene in which a Vampire/Werewolf etc confesses to his/her lover that he/she is supernatural. Now if you take a look at this scene, the Vampire tells the truth, the lover is shocked but accepts it almost immediately promising the supernatural girl/boyfriend that everything's gonna be okay and that they will be together no matter what.

Such a scene takes place as a climax (turning point) in the story, usually after a tragedy or some emotional crises so obviously the characters are bound to be tense. but soon as the confession is made, eyes widen a bit but then a kind smile breaks onto the human's face as he/she quickly accepts the truth.

Stefan: But I can't let anything happen to you! I won't be able to forgive myself if you came to any harm because of me.

Girlfriend: Hey, hey... That's okay. I will be alright as long as you are with me.

Stefan: But I'm a Vampire. I am dangerous to you.

Girlfriend: Look into my eyes, Stefan. The only thing that matters is that  you and I both love each other. And nothing in the world can stop it. Nothing can stop us being together. No matter what you are, I'm always gonna be by your side.

Aaaawwww, that's so sweet, they are such a beautiful couple!

(Note the sarcasm dripping from each word).

Yeah yeah, I agree it's very emotional. I have tears in my eyes right now from all the fake crying, ugh.

Well now that I've found my handkerchief, let's get down to the actual deal. What should have happened instead...

Honestly if I had a boyfriend for a long time who just recently confessed that he was in fact a Vampire/Werewolf etc, I won't be that supportive at all. Throw all the touchy feely things in the dustbin, that's how I'm gonna react after hearing the truth. I would feel a lot more emotions than the one described above of eternal love and blah blah blah.

Here's a list, I would be:

1. Shocked: because any normal person should be after discovering that the man you've been spending all your time with could eat you up anytime he wanted. And also, how the hell could I not figure it out in the first place?

[Because my research skills are not as good as Bella Swan and also I'm not that obsessed to google stuff just because my boyfriend is super pale and stays out of the sun].

2. Angry: because damn it, he dared cheat me by being my boyfriend even though he wasn't of the same species!

3. Disgusted: because the above point clarifies this as some sort of Bestiality case. Well, to be honest, vampires and werewolves are beasts that prey on humans and the word Supernatural is just a way of sugarcoating it.

4. Scared internally: because who knows maybe all this while I wasn't being bitten by mosquitoes at all. And it was just the love of my life coming over for a drop or two. And also due to the fact that the person laying next to me at nights had not been asleep at all the whole time I was snoring away without a care in the world.

[Plus, I'm a heavy sleeper so I would get traumatized after learning that I could have been drained/killed/eaten up/murdered gruesomely in my sleep without even realizing who did that. Dead men tell no tales; women in my case though].

5. Downright pissed: because I would definitely not approve of a relationship whose foundation is set on such a huge lie. And also because it would suck if the groom didn't show up in the wedding photos at all and the bride would just have her hand linked through someone not even present in the photograph.

[That is, if I did have the stamina to actually get married to a Supernatural creature. I'm pretty sure I would be running away from him screaming blue murder at the top of my lungs].

And if I really did have such a boyfriend (thank God that I'm spared the trouble) then it would take me a very very long time to accept it and to be sure that he and I could be fine together. It would take me more than an year to sleep comfortably because hell, if that happened to any human in real life; he/she would always have nightmares of their loved one sucking the life out of them. But in fanfictions, all this mutual understanding takes place in merely half a second.

How exactly romantic!

[P.S the gif added topmost in this chapter is in reference to this scene, just in case you were wondering].

Even if you are writing this scene with an OC who takes everything as a joke, still she can't be like "hahahehe my boyfriend is a Vampire! Imma tell this to all the bitches at school and ooooh won't they be jealous!" in just five seconds after hearing it.

[But you can do that if your story is categorized under the Humor genre. Plus, have you realized that I'm giving a lot of hints on how you can make it into a humor book? Guess I'm just in a different mood right now than usual].

***

There are infinite scenes that are portrayed unrealistically but if i went on explaining each of them then it wold take the whole night and considering that it's already 3 am, I wouldn't get any adequate sleep at all.

All I'm saying is that try and think what you would do in that situation and write it out. Not only would it be easier to relate but will also save you the trouble of diving into the never ending ocean of uncontrollable emotions.

Ah well, time to say goodbye.

Hope to see you guys soon and don't worry I have two more chapters fully planned out in my head. I just have to find the time to write them. So maybe I will get to update soon as well, but can't be sure really.

See you in the next update.

[Aaaaaaaahhhhh, my studies are going to kill me!!! Help, call the cops! This freaking exam is a blood sucking mooonnnsssterrrrr!]

Also, honestly, me having a boyfriend is extremely unrealistic. And the realistic approach to that (in my case) would be me dying single.

And that, my dears, is a consequence of being an annoying, nerdy, sass queen.
