So lets start on one of the most common topics - tortured and kidnapped Alec

I cannot even begin to tell you how much this bothers me!
In more than half of the fanfics Sebastian has kidnapped and is torturing Alec for no reason whatsoever.

Sebastian: Hey Alex! Imma gonna kidnap you!

Alec: First off, its Alec, and why do you wanna kidnap me?

Sebastian: I dunno, the author feels like it. Even though I barely know you and hate you about as much as the other shadowhunters cause you haven't really done anything to me and I should instead be kidnapping Jace, I am kidnapping you

Alec: What will you even gain on doing this

Sebastian: oh it will certainly traumatize Magnus Bane, a warlock whom I have barely heard of and don't give a fuck about but the author apparently likes mentally torturing them so yeah

Alec: Screw the author, let's make out!

Sebastian: ......

Alec: ........

Sebastian: okay!

Yeah well, that was combining another thing I hate - SEBALEC

WHY THE FUCK DOES THIS SHIP EVEN EXIST?!?!?!

ALEC HAD THE BARE MINIMUM CONTACT OR DIALOGUE OR SCENES OR WHATEVER YOU WANNA CALL IT WITH SEBASTIAN, IN BOTH BOOKS AND SHOW SO WHY DO YOU EVEN SHIP IT?!?!

THIS SHIP HAS ACTUAL FANFICS

I usually don't criticize which two or even three people fangirls and fanboys ship together but THIS I CANNOT TOLERATE

Another important that I somehow failed to mention - CLALEC

Let me try to tell you systematically why Clalec is plain wrong

1. They hated each other.

As simple as that. Mostly Alec hated Clary but Clary disliked Alec and was totally in love with Simon/Jace in the books

2. ALEC IS GAY.

THIS IS THE MAIN POINT.

Look you all, its okay if you turn straight characters into gay,lesbian, bi etc but it is NOT OKAY to turn gay, lesbian, bi etc characters straight!

Do you have any idea what kind of impact this has on the LGBT+ community?

These characters specially had different sexualities to provide support to the LGBT people out there but no. We make them hella straight and discourage every non-straight person out there!

3. THERE IS NO GOOD REASON FOR THE TWO OF THEM FALLING IN LOVE.

Now we come to Drunk Magnus

First off, there are three stages of drunk Magnus-

1. Mild drunk: He is almost not drunk, just flirtier than usual

2. Drunk: Flirty and sassy as hell with a filthy mouth and is literally glued to Alec Lightwood or feels that the world revolves around him

3. Hammered(very rare): In these rare cases he kind of loses common sense but he knows who he is and remembers the Shadow World and stuff

Now what writers do is mixing up these stages. Magnus goes from being drunk to hammered to mildly drunk to hammered again in a matter of seconds, which is NOT how it works!

And Drunk Magnus does not cry until and unless it is a VERY GOOD REASON.

Another point is that people should be specific whether they're using book characters or the show characters and try not intermingle them as might happen in an AU

For example if you are using the book character, Alec cannot be taller than Magnus and if you are using show characters then Alec's eyes are hazel and not blue.

Intermixing just creates more confusion and it is difficult for the readers to visualize the scene and engage in the whole plot.

Also, remember the bonds

Now we all know that Alec has a very strong bond with all of his siblings. If one of them dies he will probably be traumatized for days, especially if it was his fault. He would not just get over it soon.

Unless of course in the plot Jace is actually an enemy or Izzy is a cruel sister and things like that. What? Its an AU. Anything can happen

And a very important thing - DO NOT MAKE THEM FALL IN LOVE IMMEDIATELY

This specially refers to but is not limited to Soulmates AU.

Even if Magnus and Alec are each other's soulmates and know it, they cannot just fall in love at first site or even after a couple of meetings! Its all very unrealistic.
There may be lust or sexual attraction at first site but not love. It should take at least 2-3 weeks for them to fall in love, depending on the situations.

Also, they cannot just trust them immediately if they were total strangers and just met. Like hi, hello I just met you and you are insanely attractive so I trust you!

So stupid.

Shy Alec.

Okay, we all know that Alec is a bit on the shy and introvert side but don't make him overly shy and a stuttering mess EVERY TIME HE SPEAKS

Alec is not like that. It is unrealistic and difficult to relate too. Also, as we can see in the later books, his shyness fades away(but definitely cones back in times of flirting and love and Magnus) and he switches to sass mode so you can add that too.

These rules don't apply to AUs because, well they are Alternative Universes.

But still, the more you keep every character in form, the more appealing the fanfic is. Although another option is to completely reverse one's personality. Like making Alec a confident, stylish and popular guy. Some people tend yo like that.....not me, but yeah some people do.
