Chapter 1
Everyone has that one friend that is closer to them than all others.
The best friend.
They know all the secrets you're trying to make sure no one knows. They're always there, through the thick and thin. Always. That's what makes them such a great friend.
Growing up, I always had a really hard time making friends, so the fact that I never really had a best friend probably wouldn't be too surprising. Occasionally, I would make a few regular friends. Which means that we would play during recess and talk during group projects, but we were never close enough friends to where they would ever invite me to hang out with them. I mean of course I was invited to quite a few birthday parties, but the weird kid that ate his boogers was too, and I really don't want to grouped in the same category as him.
I was considered for the most part a secondary or tertiary friend. I was a back-up friend, making me always there if they needed someone to hang out with if their actual friends were out sick or if no one was available because they were all already playing another game with their other friends. And for the most part I was fine with that.
I kept myself busy with books, with school work, and anything that just keep me busying and not make me not look like a total loser. Like I said before, I really didn't want to be grouped in the same category as booger boy. Because like I said he was disgusting.
My parents always blamed my lack of friends onme not putting myself out there enough and my attitude. They said I was too cynical, too negative, and a little too self absorbed. They thought that if I would only change a little- and by that I mean my entire outlook on life- then I would have friend lining outside the door waiting to be my bestie. So, at the ripe age of seven, they enrolled me in little league soccer. They thought that not only will it be a great way for me get exercise but also a great way to make friends. But boy were they wrong- well at least about the later part.
Playing soccer was a great idea, it gave me a new sort of focus, and a new drive towards life. I was really dedicate towards winning, and I would do anything to win. And that fact made a lot of the other kids hate me even more, because not only was I really determined to win, but I wasn't quite a team player, I would never pass the ball. Basically I pushed a lot of my teammates out the the way, and kicked a lot of balls.
I had a really hard time learning that it was a team sport. I got a lot more evil glares from the parents than I ever got from kids.
But anyway, soccer was not the answer for my friendship problems. Nope. The answer to that was a girl that moved to town about mid year during ninth grade.
She was instantly popular, and though I was popular for my own reasons, she helped me become who I am today. She encouraged me to still try out for the varsity soccer team, to take on leadership positions at school, to really put myself out there. She even dragged me out to cheerleading tryouts the month before the start of sophomore year- we made varsity together.
And now four years later we rule the school together. We finished a great fall season on the varsity football cheer season, and are about to go into the competitive cheer season as well as our spring sports. We are the dynamic duo of the school.
"Quinn, are you even listening to me?" A hand waves in front of my face, and I instantly snap out of my thoughts.
I look over at Cleo, and see a concerned look on her face, "What?"
"I was asking if we could have a party at the lake house this weekend?" She asks.
I sigh and run my hand though my light brown, basically blonde hair. Cleo had convinced me that blonde would be cute on me so I dyed it a way lighter shade of brown, almost blonde, "I don't know Cleo."
She pouts and give me a puppy dog face, "Please?" She asks, "It'd be a great way to welcome the new season." She reasons.
"You know that the other teams will be having parties this weekend and next." I tell her as I get up to get another book, and she just huffs in frustration, making me roll my eyes. I really don't understand why she wants to throw a party. I mean yeah, the hosts always get major popularity, but last time we threw a party at her house it was trashed by the next morning. Her mom was not pleased when she came home early from her business trip to surprise her.
But the fact that Cleo is suggesting to have the party at the lake house is what really bugs me. The lake house was my 18th birthday gift from my parents. I've been going their since I was little, and honestly that is one of the only places I feel like I'm ever truly me. And Cleo knows that.
Where is this stupid book?
Suddenly my phone vibrates, and I pull it out checking it.
Pls???? xxCleo
Rolling my eyes I quickly type back a response.
I already said no. -Quinn
Instantly I get a reply.
Party pooper -Cleo
I frown at that, but just continue looking for the book on Victorian Era England.
Why couldn't Cleo pick a simpler topic?
After another five minutes I finally find the book and return to the table, to see that she has a depressed look on her face, and holding tightly on the necklace that her dad gave her before he dyed.
"Look Quinn, I'm really sorry. I don't know how they even heard that we were talking about that." She quickly tells me, and I just raise my eyebrow at her.
"What are you talking about?"
"You see, a few people think that we are throwing a party already." She nervously tells me, and my eyes widen.
"How?" I yell at her, earning me an evil glare from the librarian, but I give her one back and she instantly goes back to reading her book.
Cleo runs a hand through her wavy curls, and nervously laughs, "I don't know. But a few people came up to me and said that they'd be there then a few people texted me too."
"Well tell them that there's no party." I whisper yell at her, causing the grumpy librarian to shush me, and I shush her right back.
"I can't do that!" Cleo nearly shrieks, causing the librarian to shush us again, and I give her one of the same daring stares that I use during soccer games and she instantly goes back turns the other way. Good choice lady.
"Yes you can!"
"That'll ruin us though!" She starts freaking out, and I just roll my eyes. She is being so over dramatic.
I put my hand on my hip and just stare at her, she is talking about having a party at my house, and she is clearly only thinking about herself. I could careless about popularity. It's just a stupid party.
"Cleo. We don't need a stupid party. We rule the school already." I tell her and she frantically shakes her head.
"No, we have to have it now, if we don't then no one will take us seriously for now on, and we can't have that. We won't be respected. People will see us as a joke." She nearly yells.
I squint my eyes at her and give her a confused look, where has she been the last three years? "We literally set the trends for the school. We have gotten respect since day one. I doubt that canceling one party will ruin everything."
She just shakes her head and put walks up to me, putting her hands on my shoulders, looking me in the eyes and sighing. "Quinn, we can't cancel. We are the Queen B's, but if we cancel, that B, won't stand for anything good. It'll stand for Bail for the rest of our high school lives. Then during the reunion they'll all call us the Bail Queens. Do you want that for us?" She starts panicking at the end, and I instantly cave.
After all, she is my best friend, and one party at my lake house will hurt, right? And it's not like some idiot will down.
