4. the chase
Where the hell is Lisa?
Jeongguk stands next to the restaurant where he's supposed to be working, hands drumming on his thigh as he looks at the busy street. He's about to pull out his phone to call her when a familiar Porsche speeds through and stops right in front of him.
He only rolls his eyes.
"Hi, honey, sorry I'm late," Lalisa says with an uneasy smile as soon as the passenger seat door opens. Her eyes keep on shifting from him to behind the car, and then she suddenly beckons him inside quickly. "Come in, faster!"
The tone of her voice causes him to get inside as soon as possible, almost tripping on his own feet. He doesn't greet back and proceeds to questioning her. "What's wrong? What happened?"
Lalisa says nothing as she steps on the gas, the car going faster than the supposed speed limit. Jeongguk has never witnessed her drive this fast--so fast that if it weren't for the seat belt, he'd be flying out the window.
"How's work, honey?" She asks calmly, as if they aren't speeding though Seoul 200 kilometers per hour. "Sorry I was a bit late. Had a little problem in the conservatory, but I'm here now."
"Um, honey?" Jeongguk falters, gripping the edge of his seat. "You're driving a little too fast..."
"Oh, am I?" She turns to the side mirror. "It's not that fast, it's just--"
Suddenly, gunshots echo around them.
Jeongguk ducks his head on instinct, his hands already going for the gun he keeps behind his belt loops. He looks at his wife, ready to tell her to get out, but she looks unfazed. She's still driving, eyes constantly glancing at the rear view mirror.
How...?
"Honey," she says again, but this time, there's a dangerous tilt to her voice. Jeongguk waits. "Honey, can you open the glove compartment, please?"
His mouth drops at how nonchalant she was. "There are men with guns chasing us, Lali! Why are you--"
"Just open the damn compartment!"
He complies, hands rushing to open the small compartment in front of him.
"It's open!"
Lalisa nods, and then looks back at the men chasing them. "Great. Can you get what's inside, honey? Hand it over to me."
"Okay, okay, it's-- fuck, why do you have a gun?!" It's not like he's scared of the thing, but his wife having a gun was something he never thought would happen. He's not underestimating her, no, but Lisa is a kind soul and she can't--
"I know, I have eyes, honey. Now give it to me." She holds her hand out and the car goes even faster.
Jeongguk hesitantly hands it to her. "Why do you have a gun?" He repeats.
"In case someone steals the birds from the conservatory," she replies easily and finally looks at him. "Can we exchange seats, honey? I have something to attend to."
He complies, switching seats while the car continues to go on drive. Jeongguk settles into the driver's seat comfortably, hands on the steering wheel, and Lalisa kneels from the passenger seat.
"Whatever happens, just drive, okay?" She asks, and Jeongguk is about to ask why, when she abruptly rolls the passenger seat window down and flings her upper body outside.
What the actual f--
Then the shooting starts.
At first, Jeongguk thinks that men has caught up to them. It's only when he looks at his wife again that he realizes that the gunshots were from her and not from them.
She's shooting at them as if they were toys, her aim precise and clean. Lisa looks rather calm, except for the slight furrow of her brows.
Jesus, that wildlife conservatory must be equipped as hell.
"Why are these guys chasing you, honey?" He shouts amidst the gunshots.
"I prevented them from stealing an exotic bird!" is the reply.
"What kind of bird?"
"Uh," a pause, "an Eagle!"
Ah, now Jeongguk understands why these men are so insistent. Eagles are so expensive, almost extinct, and they're probably pissed because they didn't get ahold of the animal.
Man, being a bird watcher must be so hard. He feels bad for his wife.
"Where should we go?" He asks instead. He knows they should try to lose the men to confuse them, but he still wants to hear her answer. Maybe they were going somewhere that he doesn't even know.
"Anywhere!"
Alright then.
Lisa quickly gets inside and bends down to get something from under the passenger seat. Jeongguk continues driving, hands firm on the wheel. He turns his head to see his wife pull out a freaking bomb and throws it to their pursuers in a heartbeat.
"Why do you have a bomb?!" He screams, almost crashing into another car.
"They tried to steal several birds, honey!" Lisa snaps angrily and holds up the remote control. "If I say go faster, go faster, yeah?"
If this is what a bird watcher is, Jeongguk isn't sure if he'd take the job. It's crazy how much people go ballistic on these winged animals.
Then again, he's an assassin, so he's not one to judge.
Lisa kneels in her seat, eyes trained on the men. Meanwhile he tries to go even faster, the engine purring loudly at how much he's stepping on the gas. When his wife deems the distance perfect, she undoubtedly presses a few buttons and Jeongguk could only watch as the car behind them explodes into dust.
She didn't even flinch.
Muffled screams of terror and surprise are heard around them as Jeongguk continues to drive faster, eyes occasionally going back to the remnants of the car.
"Are you okay?" He checks her body, seeing if there are any unseen wounds or scratches.
She frowns. "Why wouldn't I be?"
Jeongguk sighs when he finds nothing. Good.
"You know," he says as they get further and further away from the scene, "that's kind of sexy."
A police siren sounds from a distance, but Lisa looks unbothered, hands busy returning the weapons back to their proper places.
"Oh, please. There's nothing sexy about being a bird watcher," Lisa chuckles to herself and places a hand atop his, her thumb rubbing gentle circle to his skin. "So, anyway, how's work?"
Jeongguk thinks back to the man he just dismembered in an alley way half an hour ago. His other hand absentmindedly goes to his back, where a huge patch of blood was drying.
"Everything's fine, honey," he says, and kisses his wife's knuckles. "Everything's fine."
