Chapter 16

I was woken up by my mom opening my curtains in my room.

I let out a groan, "Go away," I mumbled burying my head beneath my pillow away from the bright light.

"Get up, it's 11 and we have things to do today," my mom beamed.

"Like what," I said looking at her with squinted eyes, "I had plans with Bailey," I grumbled. I wasn't a morning person, I was actually kind of a dick in the morning.

"The sooner you get up, the sooner you'll be done. It will only take a few hours."

"What are we doing?" I asked now holding my phone in front of my face to text Bailey.

"Well your father and I are going out later so before that we have to move boxes up the attic, I want to move the furniture in the living room so I can vacuum underneath," I let my moms voice drown out while I texted Bailey.

*Goodmorning :-)* I sent hoping she was already awake.

*Hi, goodmorning :)*

*I have to do some stuff for my mom, but how about I pick you up at 4 and we can grab something to eat and hang out at my house?*

*Sounds good :)*

"Luke are you listening?" my mom scolded me.

"Yeah boxes, furniture, and stuff," I said putting my phone down and sitting up.

"Let me eat breakfast and then i'll help you," I said standing from my bed and making my way downstairs.

The things my mom had me do weren't terrible, but I would have rather used the hours watching How I Met Your Mother, or spending more time with Bailey. I was glad when I was finished, and was able to shower before leaving for Bailey's house.

"We'll be home later this evening. We're going fishing with your fathers friends," my mom said to me as I descended down the stairs from my room. I made my way outside, placing the bag of things I bought from the store by the fire pit. I figured it would be nice to have a small bonfire and some s'mores.

"Okay, i'm going to get Bailey," I said once I got inside, picking up my keys and heading for the door.

"Love you!" my mom shouted as I opened the front door.

"Love you too," I said as I let the door shut behind me.

As I turned on the car, I realized I was already late. It was 4:11 and I told Bailey I would be there at 4. I pulled my cellphone out of my pocket to call her and tell her I was about to leave. I put the phone to my ear and I waited for her to pick up.

"Hey," I heard her voice on the other end of the line.

"Hey Bailey, I'm gonna be a little late as usual," I sighed, hoping she wasn't angry or anything. I knew many people hated when someone wasn't on time.

"I counted on that," she said with a laugh, relieving the tension on my shoulders, "It's alright though."

"I'll be there in 10 minutes okay?" I said pulling on my seat belt.

"Alright see you then," she smiled before the line went dead. I turned on the radio, and pulled on my ray bans before heading towards Bailey's.

Moments later I was in her driveway and she was getting into the car.

"Hemmings," she said shutting the door.

"Parker," I said mocking her tone, "I know we just had pizza, but would it be cool to order some and just hang out?" I asked. I had forgotten to think about what we were going to do for dinner, and I knew I only had $20 in my wallet. I really needed to get a job.

"That's fine. I could eat pizza anytime," she said with a small chuckle and I laughed too. She was right, there was never a wrong time for pizza.

When we got back to my house, my parents were already gone, leaving the house quiet. I shut the door behind Bailey once we walked in, making sure to lock it so no one could rob my house. I was always paranoid about that. I was just a tall lanky kid, but I had no chance in a fight.

"Pepperoni?" I asked as I sat down in front of my laptop.

"Yep," she said walking around my living room, scanning over all the pictures. I typed in all the necessary information, like my address as she continued to look at the pictures on the walls.

"Did you play baseball?" she asked a moment later, looking at a picture of my brother and I on our back deck when we were a lot younger.

"Cricket, it's more popular in Australia," I said turning to look closely at the picture she was also looking at.

"Orders in," I said aftering one last click.

"Okay," she smiled softly, looking around the living room one last time. "Is your family not here?"

"Oh no they went fishing," I said hoping she didn't mind. She nodded and sat down on the couch, playing with her hands.

"I'm sorry if you're bored," I mumbled after a moment of silence. I cursed myself for not thinking of something better to do. She probably didn't want to sit in my living room and eat pizza, she could do that at home anytime.

"I'm not," she said with a little bit of edge in her voice as my eye caught a picture next to the tv of me at one of my performances. I quickly began typing on my laptop.

"Youtube?" she asked confused.

"I want to show you something."

"This was a year ago I think, when I performed at this outdoor festival," I said clicking one of the videos I had uploaded.

"You look like a baby," she smiled watching the video.

"Shut up," I said playfully, bumping my shoulder with hers. A minute into the video the doorbell rang, and I got up to answer the door.

I walked into the kitchen when the pizza box, and placed it on the counter along with two paper plates as Bailey walked in.

"Two?" I asked ripping two slices off for myself.

"Two," she said confirming. I ripped off two slices and slid the plate to her.

"Do you want a coke or water?" I asked opening my refrigerator.

"Coke please," she said and I passed her a can. I picked up a water bottle for myself and walked back into the living room with Bailey following me. We both sat together on the couch, and I opened my laptop placing it on the table and opening netflix.

"I was just watching this earlier," she said as I clicked on How I Met Your Mother. I was mid-bite into my pizza, so I lifted up my fist. She bumped it and laughed. She is everything I was looking for.

"I'm rewatching this series for the second time," I said after swallowing.

"I'm barely on season three," she said amazed and how fast I had already watched all 10 seasons.

By the end of the 20 minute episode, we had both finished our food and shared a good amount of laughs. I was glad to have a connection with Bailey, we both liked many similar things.

I stood up to take my plate into the kitchen to throw it away. I was going to grab Bailey's but she already had hers in her hand, walking to the kitchen.

"Do you want another piece? There's half a box left," I said opening the box once again.

"No I'm alright thanks," she said downing the last bit of her soda before throwing it away as well.

I shrugged and picked up a piece of pizza, taking a bite before nodding for to follow me with head. We made our way outside and went down the deck stairs, into my backyard. The sun was already setting, as the evening was approaching quickly. We both walked over to the two small chairs I had set in front of the bonfire pit. Bailey sat down as I reached under my chair and grabbed the grocery bag from underneath it. I pulled out everything that was needed: the wooden sticks, marshmallows, chocolate, and graham crackers.

"Like s'mores?" I asked realizing I didn't even know if Bailey did like them.

"Love them," she said. I was relieved because it would have really sucked if she didn't like them, or if even worse, she was allergic to something in them.

"I was hoping you were going to say no so I could eat them by myself," I said acting disappointed.

She leaned over and gave my arm a small push, "Jerk," she said biting her lip, obviously trying not to smile. I looked at her and gave her my classic pout.

"I was just kidding," she exclaimed rolling her eyes.

I let out a laugh and passed her a stick with a marshmallow on it. She smiled before turning to the fire, roasting the marshmallow. I did the same, but before I knew it, my entire marshmallow was on fire. I quickly tried to blow it out, not wanting to burn it to the point where it wasn't edible. Bailey laughed and I looked over as she was turning her marshmallow in circles, evening out how the marshmallow was cooking. She was being smart about this.

Finally we both had placed our marshmallows on the crackers with the chocolate. As I was trying to eat my s'more, melted marshmallow was coming out of the sides, making it get all over my hands. I met Bailey's gaze, and we both laughed. The marshmallow was all over her hands too, my plan wasn't thought through very well.

"I'm gonna go wash my hands," she laughed standing up and making her way back to my house. I kept humming, not being able to stop myself. I had a song stuck in my head, but no clue what it was.

"I'll be right back, make sure you don't light my whole backyard on fire," I said once Bailey sat back down. I needed to wash my hands too, plus I figured I could get my stereo so we could listen to some music. I made my way into the kitchen, quickly washing the goo off of my hands before making my way up the stairs to my room. I pushed open my door and grabbed my portable speaker on the nightstand next to my bed. A blanket draped over the back of my desk chair caught my eye, and I grabbed it. I quickly made my way downstairs and back to the backyard.

I put the blanket on the ground next to Bailey's chair and placed the speakers next to it. I grabbed all of the items we needed for the s'mores and put them back into the bag and set it on my chair so I could grab it when we made our way back inside. I sat down on the blanket, plugging in my phone and clicked the power button on the speakers. I clicked on my spotify playlist and turned up the volume.

I patted the blanket and looked up at Bailey, wanting her to come sit and listen to music with me. I enjoyed it when we did that together. She stood up and sat next to me with a soft smile pulling at her lips. The music started playing and we both just gazed at the fire. There was a light breeze, but nothing strong enough to put out the flames a few feet in front of us. I scooted closer to her, putting my arm around her not wanting her to be cold, but also because I wanted to be closer to her.

"Turn it up please I love this song," she said softly nudging me. You and Me by Lifehouse was playing, which I also loved. I reached over, turning the volume up before looking back at her.

"Good?" I asked.

"Good," she said leaning in to me.

Everything was quiet, besides the cackling of the fire and the soft hums coming out of my mouth.
