I was biting my newly manicured nails while staring at the phone in the living room. Conner, my brother, was supposed to be calling soon. I was told I would only be gone for 6 months, max. Well it’s been 6 months and there’s been no news. The only thing that kept me busy was my monthly allowance.

I kept my hair and nails nice, just in case I get to go back home. I wanted to work out things with Grayson, see if he meant what he told me. I didn’t want to believe that he meant it when he told me he used me.

I used the months to reign in my powers. Three weeks after we got to the city, I threw a tantrum and threw Brian across the house, through the drywall and support beams. I felt so bad that I dropped what I was complaining about. If Brian didn’t happen to be a werewolf, I would have really hurt him. He broke a couple ribs; support beams are strong for a reason. I haven’t thrown a tantrum since.

I didn’t want to hurt anyone. I just wanted to go home. I knew that it wasn’t Brian’s fault that I was stuck here. He was just the easy target.

I was able to keep out the thoughts of others by creating a metaphorical bubble around my mind. It was a pain in the butt having to listen to everything everyone around me thought.

Just because I had the power, didn’t mean I wanted it. Though the advantage it gave me over the werewolves couldn’t be overlooked.

When the phone rang, Brian leapt towards it. If I wasn’t so anxious, he would’ve beaten me. With a curl of my finger, the wireless handset came flying towards me. I caught it with a smirk at Brian.

“Connor?” I asked as soon as I pressed the “talk” button.

“Casey?” My brother’s tired voice said.

“Of course. Do I get to come home now?” I asked hopefully.

I heard him sigh. “Let me speak to Brian.” He was trying to give me an order. Like I was a part of his pack or something.

“Come on Connor, just tell me. I want to come home.”

“I know you do. I can’t tell you what’s happening. I need to talk to Brian. He can tell you what he thinks you should know.”

“No.” I said. “You should tell me what I need to know. You’re my brother, not Brian.”

“He’s your protector at the moment Casey. Knowing you, you’re probably making this very hard on him.”

“Am not!” I argued.

“Let me speak to him Casey.”

I huffed and held the phone out of Brian. “He wants you.”

Brian carefully took the phone from me.

Everything Connor told me came out so fast and at so low of a volume, that I couldn’t hear or understand what he was saying. That was frustrating… until I remembered that I can hear his mind. So I did it. I knew Brian wouldn’t be happy with me, but what can he do?

I took down my shields and focused on Brian’s mind. Connor was having trouble with a couple packs. They were still fighting some off. No one was hurt. We weren’t allowed to come home yet. Connor didn’t know when we were going to be allowed to come home. He wanted us to stay where it’s safe.

That was bull…

They had talked long enough. I forced the phone away from Brian with another curl of my finger.

“Connor, you need to tell me when I can come home.” I said as calmly as I could, which wasn’t very successful. “Tell me Connor!”

“I don’t know Casey. Just not yet. You need to be patient. You don’t want to be around here with all the fighting we’ve been doing.”

I couldn’t take it anymore. I was finished being reasonable.

"Are you fucking serious?!" I yelled into the phone. "I was told 6 FUCKING months max! Now you're telling me that this shit isn't over?!"

"Calm down Casey." Conner ordered, like that would do any good over the phone.

"Fuck you!" I slammed the phone into the holder. This wasn’t fair. I didn’t ask for this.

Becky was pissed at me for not telling her I had to leave, but we still communicated through text message. I was jealous that she got to go to college, we were supposed to go together, before everything fell apart.

Brian had Amanda here living with us. I made myself scarce as often as I could.

The only thing that made the city worthwhile is the fact that I was able to start gaining control over my abilities. I was starting to get good. Though I hardly used them, the last thing I needed was attention.

                                        ~2 1/2 years after that~

I managed to settle into the city. I had friends, even a boyfriend. Things were starting to get better.

I was laughing into my phone as I opened the door to the house.

"Whatever you fucking liar." Brian was leaning against the wall with his arms crossed on his chest. He looked mad at me. What else is new? "Call you back." I smiled, "What's up Brian?" I faked enthusiasm. He scanned my hair. It was bright red now. I had been switching colors lately. I felt like bright red hair like The Little Mermaid.

"I had an earful from Conner this afternoon." He sounded awfully grumpy.

I shrugged; I really didn’t care about what Conner had to say. I didn’t want to have anything to do with him anymore. "What did that asshole want?"

"He wanted to talk to his sister."

I laughed, "Whatever. Did you tell him I was dead like I asked?"

His eyes narrowed. "What's wrong with you? You think rebelling against the pack is good for your health?"

I lifted the pack of cigarettes I started smoking a year ago, "Does it look like I care about my fucking health?"

Brian walked over to me and put his arms around me. Something I hadn't allowed anyone to do since the day I was forced to leave. I allowed it and I hugged him back with a sigh.

"You know I love you." I nodded. Of course he loved me, I loved him too. "Please slow down."

I sighed. "Fine."

He nodded and kissed my cheek. "Your birthday's tomorrow."

I nodded, "The big 2-1." I said unenthused.

He smiled, "I'm taking you out."

"What about Amanda?"

He looked up the stairs where his wife was sleeping. "She's staying home. She can't go out and party since she's pregnant."

I smiled, genuinely happy for him, "You're going to be a daddy?"

He nodded and shushed me. "She doesn't know yet."

"Then how do you know?"

"Hormone changes."  Brian was amazing. He could smell things that weren’t even there.

I shook my head, "Your sense of smell is too good."

He nodded. "I'll be home at 5 from school. Then we'll leave around 11."

I nodded. "I'll be home when you get home then."

He smiled then walked back upstairs.

I redialed once he was safely out of hearing range. "So? Is that party still on for tonight?" I asked as soon as there was a click.

"Of course my dear."

"I'll be at your place in an hour. Gotta wait for security to sleep."

Stephan chuckled. "Alright."

Then I hung up. Stephan was the vampire I'd been hanging around. Ok, it was more than hanging around. He’s been my boyfriend for the past several months. He's a pretty nice guy, but shallow in every sense of the word. I went to my room and got ready for a night of partying with vampires.
