Chapter 28

My phone was vibrating on my bedside table when I walked into my room. I hurried over to it before it could fall off and break.

Stephan was calling. He must have been really bored when he was here because he had a picture of him pop up.

It made me roll my eyes. In the picture I was sleeping and he was leaning over me with a smile, his vampire fangs extended.

“Want to explain this picture?” I asked as a greeting.

He chuckled. “I was bored. It seemed like a good idea at the time.”

“Right. Now what’s the call for?” I’d keep the photo, just because it was unique.

“I found Monica. She’s the one who’s been with the rogues and convinced them to kidnap you.”

“Did you tell the guys?”

“No.”

“Why not?”

He sighed, “I figured you wouldn’t want them to deliver the justice.”

“And who else could?”

“You, darling. Rumor is that Finn’s powerful psychic returned your abilities to you in a full force.”

I looked around the room. Maybe he had a microphone, or a webcam in here. “Where did you hear that rumor?”

“I just hear things. So. Are you in? Or are you out?”

“I can’t kill them all.” I sighed. I didn’t know if I even had it in me to just kill the rogues. I know they killed my brother, but if I was going to raise this baby, I couldn’t just be a murderer.

“That’s fine. I’ll help.” He seemed too happy with the idea of killing a pack of rogue werewolves.

“How can you kill a whole pack? You…” couldn’t even stop Grayson from killing your own coven. I almost said it, but I didn’t finish my thought. It would hurt Stephan. I didn’t want to shove that in his face.

“They’re fighting for dominance. They’re weak and divided.”

“Fine. I’m in.”

“You have 5 minutes to get what you need together. We won’t have much time. We need to be long gone before the wolves return.” I went to my closet to grab my backpack. I shoved some warm clothes in it. “You’re going to need to look out for my car. Once they know I’m here, they won’t let you come with me.”

“Alright.” I grabbed shoved the essentials in the bag. I didn’t know how long I’d be gone with Stephan.

I threw my phone in the front pocket before gathering up everything I’d need. Stephan would buy me clothes if I stayed longer than I planned.

I was about to walk out of my room with the packed backpack when I looked over my room one last time. There was a bottle for pills on my vanity. I picked it up. They were prenatal vitamins.

I shoved them in my backpack and went downstairs. When I got to the bottom of the stairs I could hear Stephan’s car coming down the drive.

I wouldn’t be able to say goodbye to anyone. I hadn’t even told Grayson about his unborn child. He told me he loved me, but chose to be with that whore. So I’d choose to keep the whole baby thing a secret.

I sighed and walked out the front door.

When Stephan stopped the car, he didn’t get out; he just leaned over and opened the door.

“Hurry up.”

I got in the car. I threw my backpack in the back and looked over at him. “What’s with the hurry?”

“The rogues are moving out. We need to get there before they leave.”

Stephan’s sports car threw up a lot of dust behind us until we got onto one of the main roads.

“Give me your cell phone.”

“Why?” I reached back and dug it out of the pocket.

“Because.” He took the phone and threw it out the window. “I don’t want the pack tracking you.”

My jaw dropped. “Do you know how much that phone cost?” He shrugged, not really caring. “I still have to pay the bill for that.”

Stephan sighed. “I’ll pay for a new one. I don’t need your werewolves breathing down my neck right now. I have bigger things to worry about.”

He was talking about the rogues. “Where are they staying?”

Stephan didn’t look over at me. “They’re in a cabin. The owners only use it for vacations.”

“How do you know that they’re there?”

“If they are the rogues who attacked you and your brother, I’ll know. I have their scents.” We zoomed past several cars. “Once a vampire catches a scent, it’s there forever, much like the werewolves.”

I sighed and leaned back. I trusted Stephan’s driving. “I’m exhausted.”

He smirked, still looking at the road. “I’d be worried if you weren’t. Your newly pregnant, your brother was murdered, you’re recovering from a severe knee sprain, then to throw on the fact that you just got home from your brother’s funeral, you should probably be sleeping.”

I shook my head, “Let’s just get this over with. The sooner those bastards are dead, the sooner I’ll be able to sleep.”

Stephan nodded his head once. “Alright.”

I messed with the car’s seat adjustment knob on the seat. There was no way that this was a cheap car. “How much is this car?”

“It’s a Mercedes-Benz Roadster.” That meant absolutely nothing to me. Stephan looked at my blank expression. He rolled his eyes at me then looked back at the road. “It’s expensive.”

“And you drive an expensive car into werewolf territory why?”

“Because this is my fastest car and time is precious.” He sped up.

I looked forward. We were coming up to a busy intersection.

“Stephan…” I was only a little worried now. He didn’t respond. “You know I’m pregnant right?” He growled. Of course he knew, but he didn’t slow down. “With Grayson’s child?” He growled again. “He’ll kill you if the baby’s hurt.”

“Shut up Casey. I know. You’re distracting me.”

I closed my eyes and took a deep slow breath. I just had to hope he knew what he was doing.

I heard horns bare and metal crunch behind us. I hesitantly opened one eye, to look around. The car was still intact. I opened my other eye and looked at Stephan.

“We made it.”

Stephan laughed. “Yes, we made it. We’re almost there. Don’t get comfortable.”

I held onto the side rails as Stephan drove off the main road.

Stephan growled profanities when we arrived at the cabin. It looked abandoned.

I didn’t immediately get out. I scanned around for anyone thinking. All I could find was Stephan. That meant that the rogues were gone. We were too late.

I stepped out of the car, but I didn’t go far. A couch flew through the cabin’s beautiful windows. That would be expensive to fix.

Stephan jumped out the mess he made and stalked towards the car.

“We’re too late.” His voice was low.

“Obviously.”

He roughly opened the door and just stood there, looking around.

“Can you follow the scents?”

He shook his head. “No.” He looked at the dirt all around us. “There are too many tire treads. They left in cars.”

He was right. “How late are we?”

“Minutes.” He said bitterly.

I sighed. “So if you hadn’t come pick me up, then you could’ve gotten here on time?”

He nodded. He looked like he was trying very hard to restrain himself.

“We could’ve fucking passed them on our way here.” He was going to be mad for a while.

“Now what?”

Stephan huffed angrily then got into the car. I rolled my eyes then got in the car. These supernaturals needed to get a handle on their anger. It drives me absolutely crazy.

“You have two options.” He lifted his index finger. It was obviously choice number one. “You go home to the wolves, I’ll keep you updated on what I hear, but I’m not going to pick you up again. Or” he held up his second finger “you stay with me and I’ll drag you along everywhere I go.”

“How long is it going to take?” Brian was the one who was supposed to deliver my baby. Plus Amanda was due before me and I definitely had to be there for that.

“I don’t know.”

“Will you take me home if I ask you to?”

He nodded, “Of course. I’m not making you my prisoner.”

I sighed, “Alright, then I’ll stay with you.”

“How long before you need to go back home?”

I shrugged, “We’ll see.”

He nodded and started the car. “I’m sorry they weren’t here.”

I nodded and looked over the cabin. We weren’t very far away from the house. They were this close all along and the guys had no idea there were rogues on their territory.

“You didn’t pass on the warning I gave you to your brother, did you?”

I shook my head. “I wasn’t worried about it.”

Stephan shook his head and started driving. He told me he was worried about it, which should have made me worry about it.

I felt cold as I realized, my brother’s death had been my fault. If I had warned him, then we wouldn’t have gone out into the woods without any backup. Connor would’ve been looking for the rogues on his territory.

“Is this all my fault?”

Stephan looked over my face for a moment, then he looked away and started driving.

It was.

I looked down at my hands, ashamed. How would I ever be able to go back to the guys, the pack, if it was my fault that their alpha was killed? They’d never want to see me again. They’d blame me for this.

Stephan drove for maybe 45 minutes before he stopped. We were at a house in the middle of the suburbs. It was close to midnight.

He handed me a disposable phone. “Use this to call the pack house. Tell them that you’re with me and that you’re safe. Tell them you need some time away from everything to cope and that you’ll be home soon.”

I nodded and took the phone. No one answered. They were all probably too busy to notice that I was gone. So I left a message. They’d get around to checking the messages soon enough.
