Chapter 26
I was nervous. I was in pain. I was in mourning.
I definitively wasn’t in the right frame of mind to make friends with this guy.
“Connor made a deal with me, that if I let you live, that he’d see that my granddaughter was taken care of. That’s the deal we were talking about.”
“Who’s your granddaughter?” I had a pretty good feeling that his granddaughter is Grayson’s stupid whore.
Aubrina’s eyes narrowed at me. I had completely forgotten that Grayson said she was like me. She knew what I was thinking. Aubrina smirked at my realization.
“Miranda. She’s been here a few times. She’s currently the alpha’s girlfriend.” He looked so proud. That information didn’t stop the rage I felt roll through me.
I shook my head and looked away from him. “What did you come here for?” My temper was short and I know it came through in my voice.
“You should respect your elders.” Aubrina said with as much attitude as I had.
My eyes narrowed on hers. “My elders have are nothing more than a pain in my ass.”
Finn smiled at me. “You have quite the temper. It must run in your family.” He was referring to my brother. I just stared Finn right in his eyes. It was dumb, but I wasn’t in the mood for werewolf politics. I wanted to find those bastards that killed my brother and rip their guts out. “I am here to offer my condolences for your loss.” That felt like he stabbed me right in the gut. “Connor was a great man and an even better alpha. He’ll be greatly missed.”
I crossed my arms over my chest. “If that’s all you have to say, you should just leave.” I looked down at my knee. It didn’t hurt so much anymore compared to the pain in my chest.
Finn slowly sat next to my legs. “Grayson expressed concern over your leg, and over your abilities.” Finn rested his hand on my bandaged knee. It felt very warm, then the pain slowly slipped away. “I’m not going to completely heal you. There’s a risk of malformation in the healing since you’re human.” He took his hand off of my knee. It felt a lot better.
“Thanks.”
He nodded and stood. “Aubrina is going to fix your abilities.”
The woman came closer to me than Finn had. “What did you do to short circuit your abilities?”
I sighed. “I was reading Monica’s mind. She said Finn had something planned for this pack.” I looked at Finn. “I wanted to know what, so when I dug too far, everything exploded.”
Aubrina smiled, “Good to know my abilities are that effective against unwanted readings.” She placed her cold hand on my forehead. “You shouldn’t be so nosey.”
“I just wanted to know what you have planned for my family.” I was looking at Finn. “No one else has the balls to man up and tell me.”
“Have you ever considered that they’re protecting you? Connor died protecting you. Connor made the deal with me to protect you. Connor conceded to my will because if he didn’t I would’ve come for you.” Finn’s eyes narrowed on me. “I’m not someone you want to mess with. The things like you killed everyone I loved a long time ago. I made it my mission to rid the world of your kind long ago. Don’t push me.” Finn’s voice was too calm, too controlled.
Aubrina sighed once Finn left the two of us alone in the room. “You sure did press his buttons.”
“I didn’t mean to.”
She nodded, “He’s just a bit racist when it comes to people like you and me.”
“So what he said was true.”
She nodded, “That was a very long time ago though.”
“How did they kill werewolves?”
She smiled, “Very easily actually.” She sighed and took her hand of my forehead. “It was a mess in there. No wonder your abilities were on the frits.”
“Do you know what he has planned for them?”
She sighed. “Yes. But it’s not my place to tell, just as it’s not your place to ask.” She got up. “I’m not going to get punished for your curiosity.”
Then she left the room.
I sighed and tried bending my leg. If Finn healed it like Trevor was able to, then I should be good.
There was no real pain. It just felt a bit stiff and sore. Nothing I couldn’t walk on. So I swung my legs over the bed and jumped a couple times, making sure my knee wouldn’t spontaneously give out.
He’d healed me.
So I tested Aubrina’s work. I fixed my bed without touching it, then I rearranged my furniture a bit before I put everything back where it belonged.
Then I sat on the bed and closed my eyes. I could locate everyone by the sounds of their minds. Of course there were a couple minds that were clouded that I couldn’t get a read on probably by Aubrina.
I was back at 100%. Finally. I’d like to see Grayson come at me now. I’d teach him a lesson he’d never forget.
I was about to get up and join everyone when my door opened. Brian came through. “Rumor is you’re all healed.”
I nodded and dragged the cart over to the side of the bed with my mind to prove the point. “Yep.”
He smiled and nodded, “Good to know.”
I eagerly laid down next to the side edge of the bed. We hadn’t had an opportunity to do an ultrasound yet. I kept the door locked and un-open-able. I didn’t want this special moment ruined.
The gel Brian had was cold, but that didn’t matter. I propped my head up with one of my pillows.
Brian showed me the creature that my baby currently was. It sure didn’t look much like a baby yet.
Brian showed me the heart and let me listen to it for a few minutes. It was amazing.
He took some measurements and put the results into his phone while I stared at the screen.
“Everything’s great.”
“When can you tell if it’s a boy or girl?”
“You can tell between 18 and 26 weeks.” He looked at the screen again, taking another measurement. “You look like you’re a little over 9 weeks. So in a month or two we can try to figure it out.”
He turned off the machine and pushed it away from us. He wiped off my stomach and threw the napkins in the trash. “I’m just going to check out your knee. Finn wouldn’t heal it completely.”
“Why not? Trevor fixed my ankle once.”
Brian nodded and started flexing my knee. “Trevor did it all the time. When you heal humans, if something goes wrong, it doesn’t just fix itself like it does with us.”
We were silent as he finished up his exam. “You’re going to need to take it easy so you don’t aggravate it, but at least you won’t need crutches anymore.”
I nodded and stood. “Good.”
He smiled. “Take a shower then meet us downstairs. Everyone’s in the living room.”
I nodded and went to my closet. I had a slight limp, but nothing that wasn’t easy to deal with. “What did they do with Connor?”
I heard Brian sigh. “He’s being buried tonight.”
“Where?”
He was silent for a moment. “In the woods.”
“When are we leaving?”
“You’re in no condition--.”
“Shut up.” I said harshly. He closed his mouth. I grabbed dark jeans and a black sweatshirt. I wasn’t going to dress up. “I am going to go wherever they bury my brother. He was the only real family I had. He’s not going in the ground without me there.”
Brian had to be stupid if he really thought I wasn’t going to be there.
I took a hot shower until the water ran cold. It felt nice to be in the warm water, nothing thinking of anything.
It was awkward being around everyone when I went downstairs. Of course by everyone, that meant the entire pack. The house was so full. I sat on Chris’ lap since there was no room and no one wanted to stand up to give me a place to sit.
There were even wolves outside.
It was nice to see that my brother had so much support. He had so many people who loved him.
“When are we leaving?”
Chris sighed, “Soon. You’re not going to be able to keep up though.”
“Doesn’t matter, I’ll hop on your back.”
He nodded, “We’ll need to go before everyone else then. I’m fast, but not if I’m carrying you.”
I looked around the room. “Where did Stephan go?”
“To feed.” Mason said behind us. I looked back at him. “And to escape the entire pack.”
“Is he coming back?”
Mason just shrugged. “You’d have to ask Grayson. He’s the head honcho now.”
“Great.” I muttered.
