Chapter Five
I sleep the night in my childhood bedroom. I don't know why. It just felt right. When I wake up, I don't go to school like I normally would. Instead, I walk to the dojo at the mall. My dad had made Duncan promise, on his deathbed that I was to be trained by the sensei here, an old friend of his. He also insisted I know three languages other than English. With Duncan as old as he was, I just told him I was fluent in French, German, and Spanish then made up convincing gibberish to prove it. I feel bad about that now. After I decided to join the Navy, I worked really hard to earn my third degree black belt before I left. I'm a second degree right now. The dojo has always been a safe, peaceful place to be when training wasn't going on. "Sensei," I said walking through the doors. Before I could tell him about Duncan he interrupted me, "Ah, the hero has returned to train." I tried again, " Sensei, Duncan has gone to the senior care facility. I am without a place to stay. " He smiled, " How about some tea? " We sit down and he makes a proposition over tea. " Would you like to stay at the dojo? " I'm shocked, " I can't ask that much of you. " He smiled again his knowing smile, " What if I make you clean and train? " I let out a breathe I didn't know I was holding, "Thank you Sensei, I will start right away." " No, you have somewhere else to be. " As if on cue my phone buzzed in my pocket. I pulled it out to see Sarah had sent me a text, " Where are you? " I looked at the time and saw it was already near noon. I had wanted to make it to school before ten. I hastily thank Sensei and sprint all the way to the school five blocks away.
