-ˏˋ BIG TIME SLEEPOVER ˊˎ-
THE RASP OF AURORA'S PENCIL on her page of the faintly run down journal was loud in the still silence of Kendall's room. Pictures of inspiration played across her mind as she tried to capture the right words to describe them. She bit the tip of the rubber eraser on the end of her pencil before erasing some of the words on the page.
Aurora sat up on the blue-covered bed in Kendall's room. She leaned her back against the headboard and had her knees up close to her chest, her journal sitting on top of them. Almost everything in the room was either blue, black, or brown. The bed sheets, the wall, and some of the loose articles of clothing that laid around the room were blue, the dressers and the wooden frame of the bed were brown, and the television that sat upon a tall dresser was black. Even some of the posters on the wall were those colors.
Mrs. Knight's pink pajamas that were loosely fitted on Aurora's figure stood out in the room. They were a hint of light color in a sea of deep shades.
Aurora brushed the shavings off of her book and onto the wooden floor, some landing on the bed sheets underneath her. She began to pour her imagination out onto the page, wanting to immortalize the ideas quickly before they flickered and faded out of her head.
Excitement welled up within the girl as she wrote down a poem about what she believed being loved felt like. She told herself she had never received such a thing before—not from her mother, not from her father who she has not seen in years, and not from any of the boys she had gone out with in the past. All she knew were the familiar feelings of hatred and anger from her parents, and pretentious love from her old boyfriends. That wonder and fascination to find someone who would give her the experience of being loved lingered in her heart. The idea clung to the back of her mind so much that she had to let it out somehow.
So she wrote.
Kendall rubbed his eye as he opened the door to his room, coming back from the bathroom. The light from the hallway seeped into the dark room just for a few seconds until the boy closed the door behind him. He had on a plain white t-shirt with long green and blue plaid pajama pants. He yawned, the feeling of tiredness slowly taking over his body.
Aurora was so engrossed in her task that she did not notice the scrape of Kendall's footsteps across the floor and the faint shadow now looming over her.
Kendall smiled as he stood at the side of his bed. He squinted in the darkness and tried to peek and see into the journal that was pressed against Aurora's upper legs.
"Whatcha writing?" Kendall instigated.
Aurora was snapped out of her thoughts by the boy's words, startled. Her eyes went wide and she looked up from her book to look at Kendall.
"Oh!" Aurora began, putting her pencil inside the journal and closing it. She shook her head and started to scoot over to the other side of the bed, "It's nothing." She disclosed.
Kendall was hesitant to get into his bed. His heart skipped a beat at the thought of sleeping in the same bed as Aurora. She has slept over before, but that was long before Kendall had developed any sort of romantic feelings for her.
Kendall leisurely peeled the sheets off of the bed and Aurora did the same on her side. He sunk down onto the mattress and laid the sheets over his lower half. He glanced again at the book that was now in his friend's hands.
"Is that a diary?" Kendall questioned with his eyebrows furrowed. Aurora was clearly a little flustered by his presence, so he wondered what exactly she was writing in that book. He watched her as she nervously pulled back a few loose tendrils of her hair that slipped out from the bun on top of her head.
Aurora shook her head, "No, it's not a diary."
"Can I read it?" Kendall said with a smile.
Aurora scrunched up her face before almost shouting, "No!"
Kendall's smile faltered and he gave her a plain look. "Then it's a diary."
Hesitant to reveal her secret, Aurora hugged her book close to her chest. She prayed she was not blushing, although she knew she was. "It's not a diary!" She defended. "It's just...private."
Kendall narrowed his eyes curiously at the girl for a moment before turning away to face his nightstand. He picked up his black phone and opened it. He decided he would go ahead and take the advice Aurora had given to him sometime before she left his house: send James a message to see if he was alright.
Aurora put her feet in a crisscrossed position and watched the boy as his fingers typed away almost gracefully. She saw that he no longer seemed interested in her book, so she cracked it open once more and picked up the pencil.
Aurora let some of her final words spill onto the beige tinted page. After a minute or two had passed she finished up her last line, putting the pencil back into the book and closing it shut. She shifted her gaze to Kendall to see that he was staring intensely at his phone.
Aurora smirked and almost laughed at the sight. "What are you doing?" She asked him. She crossed her hands over the book on her lap.
Kendall did not change his position. He stood exactly the same, only his lips moving to answer the question. He replied, "Waiting for James to answer my text."
Mirroring Kendall's actions from earlier, Aurora peeked over to look at her friend's phone. "What did you say to him?" She asked, as she was interested.
Kendall sucked his teeth in disappointment sarcastically. "Sorry," He grimaced, "It's just...private." Kendall spoke in a higher pitched voice, mimicking Aurora's previous words.
Aurora smiled and shifted her body to face Kendall. "That's not fair!" She laughed. "I was the one who encouraged you to send that text."
Kendall smirked before quietly sighing. "Well, I'm pretty sure he's ignoring me, so there's that."
Kendall's phone buzzed.
He looked down at his phone screen and read the message, his eyes widening at James' angry and sarcastic response.
"Okay, so he's not ignoring me." He noted.
Aurora cringed at Kendall's reaction. "What did he say?"
An idea formed in Kendall's head. He tilted his head in Aurora's direction and gave her a sweet smile. He urged, "I'll tell you if you let me read your diary."
Aurora groaned. "It's not a diary!"
Kendall put his phone back down on his nightstand. He shifted his body to face his friend fully. "Then let me read it if it's not a diary!"
"No!" Aurora shot back.
Kendall turned away. He crossed his arms over his chest like a little kid and stuck his head out marginally. "Fine!" He scrunched up his face and spoke in a dramatic tone before he looked down at his lap.
Silence fell over the two best friends. They sat there for only a few seconds until Kendall glanced over at the book in Aurora's hands once again, only moving his eyes. His famous lopsided smirk replaced his frown of suspicion.
Aurora was just about to get up from her spot on the bed to go put her book inside of her school bag before Kendall swiftly leaned over and snatched it out of her hands. He flung the bed sheets off of himself and hopped off of his bed, scrambling and running towards the door.
"Hey!" Aurora panicked and gave him an icy stare from her spot on the bed. "Give that back!"
"Nope!" Kendall shouted as he opened the door and raced out of the room and into the hallway.
Aurora scoffed and quickly got up from the bed and followed Kendall out of the room. "Stop! It's not funny, come back!"
Kendall did not respond. He laughed instead and ran into the bathroom. He shut the door behind him immediately and locked it from the inside. Aurora's heart rate picked up as she rushed to the door and fiddled with the knob. Realizing that was no use, she knocked aggressively.
"Kendall!" Aurora shouted. She was embarrassed and somewhat irritated. Her book was not something she wanted other people to read. She nearly growled, "I swear if you don't open this door in the next three seconds, I'll—"
"You'll what?" Kendall interrupted her in a teasing manner, a smirk creeping up onto his face. He turned on the light in the bathroom before leaning against the door. He cracked the book open and took the pencil out from inside.
Aurora clenched her jaw and shut her eyes. "I'll...I'll..." She repeated bitterly, thinking of something to respond with. She took in a sharp breath before she spat out her next few words.
"¡Te voy a pegar una hostia que te van a salir los dientes de la boca!"
Kendall pulled his brows together in a frown. He paused on the other side of the door. "I don't know what that means!"
Aurora gritted her teeth. "It means, I will give you such a slap that your teeth will fall out of your mouth! So open up!"
A smile made its way onto Kendall's face. He bit his tongue whilst trying not to laugh. Resuming back to his task, he focused his eyes on the book in his hands. His eyes lingered and moved as he absorbed the words on the page in front of him. His mouth formed a serious line that replaced his previous smile.
Kendall had a focused gaze and a faintly furrowed brow. After reading the poem that Aurora had just recently finished he flipped to the front of the journal, skimming through the previous writings.
"Kendall!" Aurora snapped after not hearing a word from him.
Kendall was so focused that he almost did not hear Aurora. He continued to curiously flip through pages as he asked, "Aurora, what kind of diary is this?"
"I told you it's not a diary!" Aurora yelled on the other side of the door in annoyance.
Kendall blinked rapidly. "Then what is it?" He asked. He continued to flip through the pages, his skimming turning into curiously reading at a normal pace.
Aurora bit her lip. The anger had left her face and she was now becoming nervous again. She took her gaze off of the door and onto the floor. She began to fiddle with her fingers.
"It's a poem book." Aurora responded quietly after a few seconds.
Kendall could barely hear the soft words coming out of Aurora's mouth. He flipped another page and asked, "A what?"
"A poem book." Aurora spoke a little louder. The constant noise of her friend flipping through the pages of her book made her slightly anxious.
"Are you sure this isn't a song book?" Kendall speculated on the other side of the door.
Aurora's nose wrinkled. "Why would it be a song book?" She questioned with uncertainty.
"The sentences rhyme." Kendall observed, still focused on reading.
The girl rolled her eyes before saying, "Just because the sentences rhyme doesn't mean it's a song."
Kendall finally got near the end of Aurora's writings, and he read through the second to last poem. "Well," He spoke. "Whatever these things are,"
"Poems." Aurora assured.
"They're really good." Kendall continued, reading the last few lines. He flipped the page over to see if there was more, but realized he was back to the first poem he read.
"Can you open the door now?" Aurora pleaded.
Kendall chuckled. He took one last look at the page he was on before putting the pencil back where it was and shutting the book closed. He stopped leaning against and the door and stood up straight. He turned the light off, pulling the door open at a slow pace.
Kendall stepped out of the bathroom and stood directly in front of his friend. Her cheeks had a tint of red, and Kendall was not sure if it was because of her anger from him stealing her book, or her embarrassment of him reading through it. The girl's eyebrows were pulled together and lowered, and a small frown was visible on her face.
Aurora reached her hand out to grab her book out of Kendall's hands. He reacted quickly and moved the book away, out of her reach. He spoke in a calm voice, "Why didn't you tell me about this?"
Aurora tilted her head downwards before faking a chuckle. "There isn't much to tell." She looked back up at Kendall.
Kendall pursed his lips and cocked his head. His eyes narrowed as he asked, "What do you mean? We tell each other everything." Kendall shook his head. "How long have you been writing these?"
Aurora bit the inside of her cheek. "Since the middle of freshman year." She replied. She watched as her friend's brows elevated and eyes widened.
"Seriously?" Kendall doubted and Aurora nodded.
Kendall repeatedly blinked. "Why have you been hiding it all this time?" He interrogated. He watched Aurora glance away and start to fiddle with her fingers again. She answered with a sad grimace, "Because...it's embarrassing."
She continued, "I didn't want you and the guys to make fun of me."
Kendall pulled a face showing he was confused. "We wouldn't make fun of you." He denied.
Aurora raised her eyebrows, as if to say 'really?' Kendall paused and looked away for a second, pondering. "Okay, maybe just a little bit." He admitted quickly, lifting his free hand up and bringing his index finger close to his thumb.
Aurora rolled her eyes.
Kendall smiled and looked back down at the book in his hand. He fanned through the pages and said seriously, "But these are good." He inclined his head. "Really good. You could be a songwriter for James when he finally gets famous someday."
Aurora lifted an eyebrow, her lips forming into a sly smirk. "Or," She began. "I could be a songwriter for you at Rocque Records...?"
Kendall's smile broadened, though he shook his head at his friend. "I know you want to go to LA, but I'm sorry, I'm not going."
"We will talk about whether you're going or not in the morning." Aurora commanded with a straight face. "And can I have my book back now?"
Kendall reached his hand out to give Aurora the book. Before she could take it from him, he quickly narrowed his eyes and pulled the book towards his chest.
"Okay, wait." Kendall spoke, holding up a finger. He opened the book to where the pencil was and flipped back a page. "Who's this one about?" He questioned in a curious manner. He turned the book around and showed the page to Aurora.
Aurora chuckled and shook her head. "It's not about anyone." She told him truthfully.
"Oh, really?" Kendall scoffed. He flipped the book back around so he could read the words on the page. "'Here I am, there you are. Why does it seem so far?'" He quoted and recited the written words dramatically.
Aurora groaned and covered half of her face with her hand in slight embarrassment. "This is why I didn't want you to read it."
Kendall laughed. "I bet it's about James."
Aurora scrunched up her nose in disgust. "Ew, gross!" She complained. "No, it's not!"
"Logan?" Kendall teased.
Aurora spat, "No!"
Kendall exclaimed with a smile, "Carlos!"
"It's not about anyone!" Aurora spoke loudly, irritated. "They're just inspired by movies I watch, or things I see sometimes." She explained.
Kendall gave her a sarcastic nod. He hummed, "Mhmm."
"I'm serious!" She defended. She grabbed her book out of Kendall's hands with swift and shut it closed. "Now, if you'll excuse me." She began, leaning forward vaguely. "I have to go get my beauty sleep."
Aurora turned away from Kendall and trailed back to his bedroom.
Kendall smirked. "Right." He taunted, "So you can dream about Jaaames."
Aurora's feet squeaked on the wooden floor as she stopped dead in her tracks for a second. She let out a heavy breath before walking again and stating, "It's not about James!"
Kendall followed behind his friend. "Logan." He carried on.
"Still no!" Aurora proclaimed.
Kendall continued in a playful manner, "Carlos."
"¡No, pendejo!" Aurora insulted him in Spanish, stepping inside the room.
Kendall's eyes bulged out and his jaw dropped. He stopped in front of the doorway to his room. He responded, "Okay, I know what that means and it isn't nice!"
Aurora turned around to face her friend, giving him a forceful smile. She shut the door to the room in his face. Kendall heard a noise that sounded like a lock clicking, and he reached to turn the doorknob.
When it would not open, Kendall spoke, "Did you just lock me out of my bedroom?!"
Aurora smiled on the other side of the door. "That's what you get for locking me out of the bathroom!"
