Chapter 8

It's moving day. Thank goodness my mom and Kendall were here to help me get through Ben's things. I donated most of his belongings but ensured Scott could go through everything to get what he wanted before we boxed everything up. I kept a few souvenirs from Ben's college days and every photo we ever took together (except the ones that Scott wanted.) It was a difficult couple of days, but we got through it together.

"What time did you tell Dr. Daniels to be here?" Kendall asks, taping the last box shut I had set out on the porch.

I look at my watch. It's 7:45 a.m. "I told Sam 8:00."

"I'm glad you two are being friendly. Sam is a great guy." Kendall smiles before struggling to her feet.

I quickly get up to help her. "He is. Although, after today, he might wish he never offered up his strong arms to me," I giggled.

Kendall raised her eyebrows.

"You know what I mean. Don't be an asshole," I say, the amusement gone from my voice.

She holds up her hands in defense. "Who me?"

We don't hear Scott enter the room. "Who's calling my wife and the mother of my child an asshole?"

Kendall pouts and points at me.

"Damn, Scott. What the hell? Keep sneaking up on us like that, and we'll make you wear a bell around your neck," I joke with a smirk.

He childly sticks his tongue out at me, and I roll my eyes.

"So, where's the Doc?" Scott asks, looking around as if he missed seeing him.

"He should be here any minute," I said, looking at my watch again.

Speak of the devil; Sam pulls in behind the moving truck.

He gets out of his car with his hands full. "Good morning. I brought coffee and donuts. Decaf for you, Mrs. Denson."

"You're hired!" Scott exclaims.

"And you get a raise," I add.

"Who knew it only took a few donuts." He smiles sweetly, his eyes landing on me.

"And don't forget the coffee," I include.

"Right. Who knew a couple of donuts and coffee would get me a raise? Do you think it would work for the hospital board?" he jokes, his eyes dancing with mischief.

"Nah. We're pushovers compared to them," I say before trotting down the steps to help him.

Sam hands out coffees, and I hold the donut box so we can choose one.

"Mallory, here's your coffee. Two creams and one sugar."

I take the cup. "Thank you, kind sir."

I catch Kendall and Scott looking at each other and smiling.

I give them a dirty look. "What's the big deal? The man pays attention."

"Obviously," Kendall smirks.

Sam blushes, and it's adorable.

"See... now you've embarrassed the help," I say with mock annoyance.

Sam raises his brows. "The help, huh?"

I shrug. "You're here to help, right?"

His hand goes to his chin, fake thinking before he smiles. "I can't argue with that logic. I guess I'm the help."

We put the last bite of donuts in our mouths when the boss speaks up, "Okay, slackers. Let's get to work."

I lean in and whisper to Sam, "I told you she would be bossy."

"You did, and I think I mentioned something about gusto," he adds, which makes me grin.

"Chop, chop, people we don't have all day. I heard that there would be pizza once we finished the job," Kendall announces, clapping her hands

"You just ate a donut." I fire back as she pulls another donut out of the box, and I can't help but chuckle.

Kendall shrugs. "I ate mine; this one's for Baby Boy."

"That's my boy!" Scott proudly exclaims.

We finally entered the house and began to take the boxes and furniture to the truck. Kendall and I had everything reasonably organized, and within two hours, we had the U-haul packed full.

"Kendall and I will drive the truck to Mallory's rental unit. Do you mind driving Mallory over, Doc?" Scott asks Sam.

Sam looks at me before responding, "I wouldn't mind."

Kendall and Scott hop in the truck and pull out, leaving Sam and me standing in the front yard.

"Would you mind if I did a final walk-through before we go?" I choke out, finding it difficult to contain my emotions.

"Of course not. Would you like me to go with you?" Sam asks sweetly.

"No, thank you. I only need a minute." I give him a sad smile, and he nods.

I walked into the home Ben and I shared four months ago. I'm happy this home will have what Ben and I couldn't give it: a loving family with children's laughter and a husband and wife's love to grow old together. A single tear escapes as I leave and close the door on what could have been.

"Hey." Sam looks at me, his forehead creased with concern.

"Hey," I respond quietly, unable to meet his eyes.

He opens his arms, and I don't hesitate to enter his embrace. "Are you okay?"

"Yeah. It's just hard." I breathe in his spicy scent for a moment longer before I pull away. "We should go," I say before wiping the tears from my eyes.

He releases me. "We should."

We arrive at the storage unit and see Scott and Kendall waiting outside.

"Sorry. It's my fault we're late. I wanted to take one last look around," I apologize.

Scott gives me a knowing look. "No need to apologize. I would've gotten the storage unit key from you if we were thinking. That way, I could have started unloading some smaller items."

"That would have been a great idea." I return his smile.

"I know, I'm brilliant." He smirks, and my eyes look heavenward.

Moving my things from the truck into the storage unit took less than two hours. After I locked up, we headed to Scott and Kendall's apartment for pizza and beer.

I'm riding with Sam again to Scott and Kendall's.

I place my hand on Sam's arm. "Thank you again for helping out, Sam. I appreciate it."

He places his hand over mine. "I had a nice time with all of you today."

I slip my hand off of his arm. "Are you sure you don't mind taking me back to get my car after we eat?"

"Not at all. I have nowhere to be."

"If you change your mind, Kendall can drive me." I give him an out.

"I don't mind, Mallory."

I'm glad Sam is following Scott. I lean back into my seat and close my eyes.

"I'm going to feel this tomorrow," I admit.

He gives me a side-eye. "Yeah? Not used to manual labor?"

I laugh, "The only thing I pick up is my sweet little patients; they don't weigh very much."

"Tomorrow, they're going to feel like they weigh a ton with as sore as your arms are going to be," he retorts.

I groan. "Oh, god! I hope not!"

Sam pulls along the street behind the moving truck. We see the pizza delivery guy's car pull up as we leave the car.

"Perfect timing," Sam says.

The next thing we see is eight-month pregnant Kendall waddling as fast as her little legs can carry her to the pizza guy.

"Holy shit, did you see the look on that poor guy's face?" I gasp.

"Poor guy probably thought she was going to attack," Sam chuckles.

Through my laughter, I say, "I can just see the headlines now: death by an overzealous pregnant woman."

Sam holds his stomach and laughs that deep-roaring laugh that I've come to adore, and I about peed my pants doubling over from cracking up.

Kendall looks at us like we have three heads. "What the hell is so funny?"

Kendall goes waddling by us with the pizza boxes in her hands. Sam and I take one look at each other, and we're once again laughing uncontrollably.

Scott chimes in, "Hey, do you two want to share with the rest of the class?"

Sam shakes his head. "Nope. We're good."

"Well, if you two don't get your pizza quick, there are no guarantees that Kendall and Baby Boy will leave you any," Scott warns.

Sam and I lose it again as we go inside to claim our pizza.

Turning to Sam, I ask, "Are you ready to head out."

We had our fill of pizza and a couple of beers. We're all exhausted from our busy day.

Sam nods and gets up off of the chair. "Whenever you are."

I stand and go over to hug Kendall and Scott. "Thank you both for all of your help. You two are the best."

"Of course." Kendall hugs me.

"Payback is next week," Scott informed me.

I roll my eyes. "Yeah, yeah. I'll be here to pay my debt in full."

Sam asks, "Do you guys need help next week?"

"If you're available, that would be great," Scott says gratefully.

"I'm good for the morning, but starting at 4:00, I'll be on call," Sam reveals.

"That will work. Can you be here at 7:30?" Scott asks.

"Sure," Sam replies.

"Thanks, man." Scott shakes Sam's hand.

"Don't mention it. Today was fun." Sam smiles, patting Scott on the back.

"If today was your idea of fun, I don't even want to know what a bad time means in your book," I say, jumping in on their conversation.

I look over and see Kendall sleeping on the couch. "Come on, Sam. Time to go."

Sam and Scott say goodbye, and we head to his car. He opens the door for me.

"Thank you." I smile sweetly at him and get into the passenger seat.

He gets behind the wheel. "I meant what I said about today being fun. It was a blast hanging out with the three of you. I haven't laughed this hard in a very long time."

"You need to get out more and have fun," I giggle.

"I would like to." I catch him looking at me before I lean my head back and close my eyes.

We drive the rest of the way in comfortable silence; somewhere along the way, I fall asleep.

"Here we are," Sam announces, waking me.

"Oh my goodness, did I doze off?" I say, feeling my face go hot with embarrassment.

"Not for long. You look exhausted. Are you sure that you are okay to drive home?" He looks at me with concern.

"Yeah, I'll be fine," I yawn.

Sam places his hand on mine. "Do me a favor. Please text me when you get home so I don't have to worry about you."

"Awe. You're so sweet. Of course, I'll text you when I get home. Thanks for caring." I beam.

"That's what friends are for." He gets out and walks over to open my door. He offers his hand to help me out.

I take it and realize after our hands have touched several times today that his hands are smooth yet firm. "Thank you."

"You're very welcome." He walks me over to my car.

I press the button to unlock it, and he opens the door for me. "A girl could get used to this."

He grins. "Please drive safe."

"I will," I promise, then get into the driver's seat.

"Don't forget to text me," he reminds me.

I salute him, "I won't forget."

"See you tomorrow." His mouth slightly turns up.

"See you then," I say, waving.

Sam shuts my door and walks back to his car, and yes, I check out his ass as he leaves. I start my car, pull out, and wave again as I pass him. It's not until I'm several blocks away that I realize I didn't even look towards my house before leaving.
