Chapter 5

Kendall breaks down at Scott's words, and my heart breaks for her.

"Kendall, Baby, I'm sorry. That came out wrong." He quickly embraces her, and suddenly, I feel like I shouldn't be there.

"Um... I should be going." Kendall and Scott both turn towards me.

"Mallory, please stay," Kendall insists, tears still glimmering in her eyes.

"You two have a lot to talk about," I say, getting off my chair.

"Mallory, you're family, sit," Scott adds.

I sit back down and sip my iced tea. Scott gives Kendall another quick hug, sits back in his chair, and again takes her hand into his.

Scott takes a deep breath. "Give me a minute to take this in."

We all sit silently for several moments, giving Scott time.

Scott speaks, "So pregnant, huh?"

"Yep," Kendall quips, unable to look Scott in the eyes.

"How did it happen?"

Kendall smirks and raises her eyebrows at Scott.

"I mean, I know HOW it happened. I just thought that you were on birth control."

"I was up until I found out that I was pregnant. The doctor said that there is typically a 97% of birth control pills preventing pregnancy and can be as low as 91%," Kendall explains.

"I guess we were in the lucky 3%." He smirks.

"So you're not mad?" Kendall asks quietly.

He smiles, "Surprised? Yes. Mad? Hell no."

"I just thought with the way we had our lives all planned out, it would piss you off, or you'd hate me," Kendal confesses, putting her head down.

Scott places his finger gently under her chin and lifts her face to look into her eyes. "First and foremost, I could never hate you, ever. Second, life has a way of throwing you a curveball. Even the best plans for a future can change instantly."

Scott looks at me as tears well up in my eyes. He gives me a sad smile and then turns back to Kendall.

"So, how far along are you?" He sweetly touches her tiny baby bump.

Kendall places her hands over Scott's. "A little over four months."

Surprised, he asks, "Four months, and you just found out?"

She nods her head. "You know how irregular I can be, and I was on the pill. Trust me; I was just as shocked as you are now."

"Wow, you're about halfway through, and we didn't have a clue." Scott's eyes go wide in disbelief.

"No clue whatsoever. The only reason that I went to the doctor is that work requires us to get yearly checkups. Who knows when I would have figured it out," Kendall replies.

"I would think that once it started to move, you might have an idea that something was up," I added.

We all laugh as Kendall agrees, "You would hope so."

"So when is your next appointment with the obstetrician? I want to make sure that I take off." Scott says sweetly, and I smile.

"Next Wednesday at 10:00," she responds.

Scott takes Kendall's hands. "I'll make sure to get off."

"Thank you," Kendall looks at me. I'd like you to be there, too. After all, you are the godmother."

Awe. "Count me in!"

It's Wednesday, and I'm meeting Kendall and Scott at Doctor Daniels' office. I have seen him around the hospital but don't know him personally.

I arrive before them and park my car. A few minutes later, Scott's car pulled in. I get out and walk over to the entrance where they meet me.

"Hi, are you excited for your first sonogram?" I ask, feeling giddy myself.

She looks over at Scott, and they grin. "We are."

"Doctor Daniels told Kendall that we should be able to see the baby's gender today, too," Scott adds excitedly.

"Do you two want to know, or will you wait until the baby arrives?" I inquired, wondering if I'd want to know. A sad feeling envelopes me, but I push it away for the sake of my friends.

"We're going to find out. That way, we can start to prepare," Kendall reveals, her eyes sparkling excitedly.

I smile at the two of them, "Any guesses?"

"Girl," says Kendall.

Scott retorts, "Boy."

We all laugh and enter the doctor's office waiting room. I take a seat while Scott goes with Kendall to check-in. They come and sit with me to wait for Kendall's turn.

I look at them. "So, do you two have a bet on who is correct regarding the baby's gender?"

Kendall responds, "No."

"Should we?" Scott wiggles his eyebrows at Kendall.

Kendall places her hand on her chin. "Hmmm. It all depends on what you want as your reward."

Scott looks deep in thought, contemplating his reward. "Let's see..."

"While Scott tries to figure out his prize for winning, what about you, Mal? Do you have a guess? You're the baby expert here." She smirks.

I chuckle. "I may be an expert at taking care of babies after birth, but while it's still in utero, I have the same 50/50 chance at guessing as you two."

"So, take a guess," Kendall insists.

I shrug my shoulders. "Sorry, Ken. I'm with Scott on this. My guess is a boy."

"I thought you were my friend." Kendall fake pouts.

Scott interrupts our conversation. "I know, I know what I want if I win. Wait, did I hear that Mallory agrees with me?"

"You did," I confirm.

He smiles with delight at this rarity. "Great minds."

Kendall laughs at his antics. "Okay, okay. So Mallory is on your side. Enjoy this rare moment while you can. Now, what's your prize if you win?"

Scott leans over and whispers in her ear. I can only imagine what he said to her, but whatever it was made her fair skin turn three shades of red.

Scott raises a brow. "What about you, Babe? What's your prize?"

"Back rubs on command till this little one arrives. Deal?" She smiles slyly.

"Deal," he agrees.

A nurse appears at the door and calls, "Kendall Keller?"

"Yes?" Kendall answers.

"The doctor is ready for you," the nurse announces.

We all stand.

"Is it okay for my fiancé and best friend to come with me?" Kendall asks.

She responds, "Absolutely. Follow me, please."

The nurse weighs Kendall, takes her to an examination room, and checks her vitals.

She instructs Kendall, "Here's a gown for you. Please remove everything from the waist down. Doctor Daniels will be with you in a moment."

"Thank you." Kendall changes while Scott and I talk.

Ten minutes later, Doctor Daniels knocks and enters the room. "Good morning, Miss Keller. It's nice to see you all today. Your chart shows you are about four and a half months along. Are you ready to see your baby?"

"Yes." Kendal and Scott reply in unison,

I didn't remember Dr. Daniels being so attractive and sweet. Maybe I was just too busy to notice.

"Any guesses?" He looks right at me and smiles. Then I noticed his eyes go to my hand and engagement ring. Did I see him look disappointed?

He turns towards Scott. "Dad?"

"Boy," Scott announces proudly.

The doctor turns towards Kendall. "Mom?"

"Girl!" Kendall exclaims excitedly.

He looks at me again. "I'm sorry, do I know you? You look very familiar."

I smile. "Mallory Stevens, Neonatal Nurse. We both work at The Villages Regional Hospital."

I can see the recognition on his face. "Ahhh. Yes! So you are..."

Kendall answers, "She is the baby's Godmother and my best friend."

"Any guesses, Godmother?" he asks.

I look at Scott. "I'm on his team, boy."

Doctor Daniels raises his brow. "Interesting, siding with Dad, huh?"

"Yeah, she's going to pay for that," Kendall jokes.

"Well, let's see who the winner is."

Kendall has a sheet across her lap, and then Dr. Daniels lifts her top to just under her breast.

"Miss Keller, I'll put some gel on your abdomen. It may feel a little cool. Okay?" he warns.

Kendall reaches for Scott's hand. "Okay."

Dr. Daniels places the ultrasound conductor on Kendall. He hits the keyboard controls to take different measurements as he moves it around. After a few moments, he turns on the sound, and we hear a steady swooshing sound.

He describes the swooshing sound we are hearing as "your baby's strong, very healthy heartbeat."

I look over at Kendall and Scott. They both have tears in their eyes.

Doctor Daniel makes the announcement that we've all been waiting for, "And the winner is... congratulations, it's a boy."

Scott kisses Kendall's forehead. "Oh my god, Kendall. We're having a son." Scott's excitement is adorable.

"Congratulations. So what's your award, Scott?" I ask because I'm nosey and want to know why Kendall blushed at his answer.

"Uh, sorry, Mal, it's between my baby daddy and me. You stay out of it." Kendall makes it clear that she has no intention of telling me.

I put my hands up, surrendering. "I guess I'll just have to use my warped imagination."

Dr. Daniels stops cleaning off Kendall's stomach and turns towards me, raising his eyebrows and smirking. Heat crawls up my neck, settling in my cheeks.

He returns his attention to Kendall and Scott. "Okay. All I need to do is print these images for you. I was unsure if I would need the probe, so I had you disrobe from the waist down. That won't be necessary since we have good images and everything looks great. So you can go ahead and get dressed, pick up your pictures when you checkout, and make your next appointment. Again, congratulations."

Dr. Daniels shakes Scott's hand before turning off the machine and walking towards the door.

He gives me one last smile before leaving. "See you at the hospital, Mallory."

"Uh, yeah. See you."
