Chapter 17
I took two weeks off of work to take care of Sam. He's getting around pretty well, but Dr. Preston wants him to take at least two more weeks off. Sam has a fellow OB/GYN caring for his practice while off. I just finished preparing spaghetti and meat sauce for dinner. Sam is slowly making his way to the table. He was just on the phone with Sammy.
"Yum, Babe. Dinner smells amazing." Sam limps over to me and kisses me on the cheek.
"Thank you. How's Sammy?" I ask while draining the cooked pasta.
"She's good, but I do want to run something by you."
I get everything on the table, and we sit to fill our plates.
"Yeah? What do you want to run by me?" I ask, passing him the bowl of pasta.
"Well, I've been loving staying with you these last couple of weeks, and the thought of leaving you is honestly breaking my heart," he admits sheepishly, fiddling nervously with his napkin.
I put my hand on my chest in awe of this man. "So what are you suggesting?"
Sam explains, "Sammy and Tim's leases on their apartments run out at the end of this month. They've been looking for a house to rent but have been unable to find one they both like. On the phone just now, Sammy commented how she and Tim would love to find a house like mine because they both love it."
"Okay..." I'm not sure where Sam is going with this.
"What do you think about offering to rent them my home, and you and I become permanent roommates?" he smiles and wiggles his brows.
"You want to move in here?" I ask, surprised.
"If you will have me." He takes my hand.
"Your house is amazing, Sam. Why would you want to leave it?"
"Because it doesn't have you." He squeezes my hand. "So, what do you think?"
"If you are sure that is what you want, I would love to have you as a roommate."
"Oh, I'm so damn sure." His eyes sparkle as he takes my hand and kisses it.
Sam returns to work on Monday. We've been spending all weekend going through things in his home with Sammy and Tim. As we sift through Sam's belongings, there are three categories. First, does Sam want to keep it? If not, Sammy and Tim have the option to keep it. If they don't want it, it goes on a donation pile.
Once we sort everything in Sam's house, Scott and Tim move what he's keeping to my house and take the unwanted items to the donation center.
"I didn't feel very helpful," Sam says, dismayed.
"You know there's no way that Scott or Tim would have let you lift a finger. You start work tomorrow, and you don't need a setback because you overdid it," I say, trying to make him feel better.
He lowers his eyes. "I know you're right; it's just hard feeling so damn helpless."
I put my hand on his shoulder. "I'm sure that this has been hard on you. We'll take care of them all with your delicious grilled steaks."
"Yeah. Just call me the Grill Master." He smirks.
I chuckle. "Yeah, that's not happening!"
Sam and I are preparing a cookout for everyone to thank them for their help.
"Knock, knock." Kendall walks in with eighteen-month-old Benny Boy.
"Ma, Ma," Benny calls me Ma just like he does Kendall. He can't pronounce the L yet in Mal. I think it's adorable, Kendall, not so much.
"Mal, Benny, Mal," she overpronounces the L.
"Maaaaaa" is Benny's response.
Kendall rolls her eyes as I reach for Benny. "Hey, Benny Boy."
Sam walks over to say hello. "Hi, big guy." He hardly has a limp anymore.
"Hi," Benny responds to Sam, speaking clearly.
"Oh my goodness, Ken. He's getting so big." I kiss Benny's chubby cheeks, and he giggles.
I glance over and see Sam beaming at Benny and me. "What?"
"I just thought that you'll be an incredible mother."
I smile at him. "Yeah? Someday..."
There's a knock on the door, and Sammy comes walking in. "The guys aren't here yet?"
"Scott just texted me. They'll be here in five minutes," Kendall informs us.
"Is there anything I can do to help?" Sammy asks.
I respond, "Nope. Sam and I got this. You two head to the backyard; drinks are in the cooler."
Kendall takes Benny from me, and the three go to the backyard. Sam takes the marinated steak out to put on the grill.
I'm getting the macaroni and cheese out of the oven when I see Scott and Tim in the backyard.
Sam pops his head inside. "Steaks are ready."
"I'll be right there," I call out.
I place the macaroni and cheese on the outdoor table, then return to get the baked beans from the crockpot.
Sammy meets me at the door and takes them from me. "Thank you," I say, appreciating the help.
I get the tossed salad out of the fridge and sit with everyone to enjoy our dinner. Once we have our fill, Sam and I clean off the table and put the dishes in the sink. I grab the strawberry pie and whipped cream. Sam opens a bottle of wine to have with dessert.
Sam waits to sit. He looks around the table at our friends and family. "There are no words to do justice to how I feel about each one of you. Your friendship and the generosity you give Mallory and me are beyond anything I've experienced."
I nod in agreement.
Scott speaks up, "You have also been there for us."
Sam gives Scott the side eye. "We had to move your shit once. You've helped Mallory twice and me once. I would say that we owe you."
"Sam, we are not keeping score," Kendall adds, wiping strawberries from Benny's mouth and hand.
"I know. I'm just saying you're very much appreciated." Sam replies sincerely.
"We love you too, Bud." Scott elbows Sam.
I stand up and join Sam. "To friendship and family. Cheers!"
Everyone clinks their glasses, cheering each other.
The next thing I knew, Sam slowly took a knee before me.
"Sam, what are you doing?" I questioned, my brows snapping together, confused.
"Mallory, you're my everything. I didn't have a clue what love was till I met you. I knew I would have to be patient and wait for you to be ready to love again, and it was worth every second. When I was in that accident, I needed to have you in recovery so that you would know that I was going to pull through for you no matter what. I love you so much. You are my entire life."
Tears stream down my cheeks with love for this man kneeling before me.
"Would you do me the honor of making me the happiest man on this planet and become my wife?"
He pulls out the most beautiful round solitaire diamond ring.
My hand goes to my mouth. "Oh, my God, Sam. Yes. Yes, I'll be your wife."
"Thank God. Shit, can someone help me off of my knee?" Sam asks, his face scrunched up in pain.
Scott chuckles and gives Sam a hand. Once we both stand, Sam places the ring on my finger and takes me into his arms. We kiss like no one else is there, pulling away, and we hear everyone applauding.
"I love you, Samuel Daniels," I say, blinking back the tears filling my eyes.
"I love you, too, soon-to-be Mrs. Mallory Daniels."
Everyone gathers around us to give us hugs and congratulations. I'm beside myself with joy and happiness.
After everyone left, Sam and I finished cleaning up the dishes. I was putting the last plates in the dishwasher when I felt Sam's arms around my waist. I closed the dishwasher and leaned back into his chest.
"Mmmm," I moan.
He begins kissing my neck.
"Oh... Sam..."
"Hmmm?"
I get goosebumps at the slightest touch from him. I turn around and wrap my arms around him as he pulls me close.
"I can't believe that you asked me to marry you in front of our family and friends," I say, my mouth curving into a smile.
He leans back and looks me in the eyes. "If it wasn't for Kendall and Scott, we might never have gotten together. I wanted them to be present when I asked you. It just so happened that my sister and Tim were here too."
I smack his arm. "You're terrible."
"That's not what you said last night." He smirks, waggling his eyebrows.
"Wow," I say sarcastically, looking heavenward.
"Yes, now that is what you were saying last night." He beamed, his eyes glinting with mischief.
"Oh, my God, Sam," I exclaimed, slapping my hand onto my forehead.
"Again, here is more of our conversation from last night." He chuckles at himself.
"Stop," I say, giggling like a schoolgirl.
"Nope. I don't remember hearing that last night." He pulls me into him, kissing me slowly and seductively, and I melt into his embrace.
