Chapter two

My mentor gives me a small bag made of white leather. It's definitely from the Capitol; it's currently considered the most fashionable type of material. I had to hear Ionel, Ateia and my prep team talk about that for way too long. Intrigued, I grab it and before I can open it, Mags stops me.

"It's because of you. Everyone is thankful for that."

Having a vague idea of what it may be, I open the pouch as if it was going to be taken from me any second. I have to stop the tears from running on my face as I unpack Viviana's beautiful necklace. It's just like how I remembered it. To my surprise, two items are still sitting in the bag, waiting for me to collect them. I immediately recognize Adenias' copper bracelet but it takes me some time before realizing that the other token belonged to Cedar. Just like you'd expect from someone from District Seven, it's a beautiful wood ring. Inside is engraved his last name: Clarksridge. It's probably a family heirloom. Only a scratch is left to tell the story of who once was wearing the object.

"Why are their tokens there? Weren't they returned to their families?" I ask, suddenly worried.

"I don't know. They were your allies so maybe you're supposed to give them back yourself." proposes Mags, clearly as clueless as me.

"Where is Anthos' then? He was my ally too."

"I don't know. Maybe there was nothing left to give back." she answers shamefully as if she was the one to blame for what happened.

"I suppose it makes sense."

I can't help but feel sorry for Anthos' family. At least I can say I tried. Even if I'm holding the tokens, I still can't believe it worked.

"After you said you wanted to have the tokens, everyone decided to buy them since; no one wanted to deceive you. When I gave them to Mags, she told me that you wanted them to return the objects to the families which is so nice of you!" says Ionel, answering the question I had in mind.

I thank him with a smile and for the first time since I met him, I don't have to force it. I also couldn't help but notice that he didn't talk in his usual excited and cheerful voice; something seems wrong. I don't bother to ask because as soon as I look at him with an intrigued face, he quickly jumps back to his old annoying personality. I probably just imagined everything anyway.

When we arrive at the justice building, I enter alone and walk towards the mayor's office, the necklace in my hand. It's been a while since I've been here, but I clearly remember where it is. I knock on the door that separated me and Mags a few months ago, bringing up memories that I'd rather forget.

"The door is open."

At the sound of the familiar voice, I can't help but shiver. Since I came back, I've been avoiding him. When I look in his eyes, I only see Viviana's. They have the same brown almond shaped eyes and every time, I find it destabilizing. A peacekeeper opens the door for me and incites me to enter the room where I was shoved by one of his coworkers. When I step in, the mayor lifts his head from the paperwork sitting on his desk. At first, he looks surprised; I would be too.

"Hello, Finnick. What is the reason behind your visit."

"I wanted to give you something before I left. I thought you'd be happy to have it back."

I see something changing in his eyes as he finally sees the object I'm so carefully holding. Viviana looked so much like him; the resemblance was uncanny. It's weird because I used to think she was her mother's twin. That's not important anymore; she's dead because I couldn't save her.

No; she's dead because the Capitol killed her.

I have to constantly remind myself that what happened in the arena wasn't my fault. If I keep saying it, maybe someday I'll start believing it.

Tears in his eyes, the mayor gets up from his chair and walks towards me. As soon as the necklace touches his shaking hand, a tear falls out of his eyes. He quickly dries them, probably ashamed of showing emotions. He spends some time just standing there, admiring what was once his daughter's.

"She didn't want to bring it inside of the arena, you know." He says, still looking at the token. "She said didn't want to lose it or break it. Truth is, I'm pretty sure she just wanted me to keep it. I didn't realise it until her... her body came back without it. It used to be her mother's. I gave it to her the night of our wedding, years ago. When she died, Viviana attached her wedding ring to it. This necklace probably was the thing that was the most precious to her. Thank you for bringing it back."

"I'm sorry for your loss, sir." I answer, not knowing what else to say to a man that has lost everything.

A knock on the door interrupts him as he's about to say something. He quickly dries his face for a last time before inviting whoever knocked to enter. Mags is nervously standing there. She looks so tiny compared to the two peace keepers that are guarding the door. Since the incident, she stayed fearful of those soldiers that the Capitol sends in the districts. I have no doubt that the fear she shows only hides anger and a desire of vengeance.

"We should get going or the train is going to leave without us." declares Mags as she walks towards the long vehicle, expecting me to follow her.

Before I leave, the mayor thanks me oncemore but I can't answer anything; the peacekeepers have already closed the doorbehind me. Without looking back, I start walking in the corridor towards theexit.
