Trying to Understand
Everyone was on board and we took off. Thor sat next to me, stroking my hand. After a while of flying I was able to speak again.
"Are you sure all right?" Thor asked me for the hundredth time.
"Yes, Thor. Really I'm fine." I said slightly annoyed. I knew he was just being caring, so I tried to not bite his head off.
Clint laid on a table attached to an IV. Bruce and Nat were talking which I couldn't help but, smile at. They were really cute together.
"Amara." Heimdall spoke in my head.
"Hello, Uncle."
"I can see you were in distress."
"Well, I'm alright, Uncle. A witch got inside my head and the vision... It showed me something. Something strange and I'm worried about what I saw, but also about what's to come. Everyone I knew was dead and I was somehow at the center of it." I explained concerned.
"Don't worry, my child. I'm sure you will figure it out. We should have a discussion about what you saw. Maybe sooner than you think, in person."
"Yes, Uncle. We should and thank you." I snapped back to reality when Nat called to Thor.
"Thor report on the Hulk." Nat said to him. He stood up and walked closer to them.
"The gates of Hel are filled with the screams of his victims." Thor stated proudly. Bruce groaned and Nat shot him a death glare. Quickly noticing this was not the answer he was looking for Thor tried to dig himself out of the hole he'd already dug. Steve and I pursed our lips, trying to hold back any laughter.
"But not the screams of the dead, of course. No, no, wounded screams. Mainly whimpering, a great deal of complaining and tales of sprained deltoids and gout."
Steve was trying really hard not to laugh at Thor struggling to take back his words. I threw a small ball of light at Thor's back. He turned to look at me surprised and I gave him a glare too, trying to hold back my smile.
"What?" He asked. I just shook my head at him.
"Hey, Banner, Dr. Cho is on her way in from Seoul. Is it okay if she sets up in your lab?" Tony called to him in the back, since he was piloting the jet.
"Uh, yeah, she know's her way around." Bruce answered.
"Thanks. Jarvis take the wheel." Tony said.
He then turned around and walked over to us. I got up and walked over, standing beside them. We all looked at the scepter.
"Feels good, yeah? I mean you've been after this thing since Shield collapsed." Tony said talking to Thor. "Not that I haven't enjoyed our little raiding parties. But.."
"No, but this... This brings it to a close." Thor said with a small smile.
"We need to find out what else thing thing has been used for." I said softly. Steve put his hand on my back. "I don't know why, but like with the Tesseract, I can feel this thing's energy. Whatever that is, was not used for anything good." I explained pointing to the blue glow at the end of the scepter.
"She's right. And I don't think we mean just weapons, here. Since when is Strucker capable of human enhancement?" Steve agreed and asked.
"Banner and I will give it the once over before it goes back to Asgard. Is that cool with you?" Tony looked at Thor and he nodded. I saw Tony's eye's flick back to mine. I knew he'd have to go back at some point soon, but I'd have to stay here again. "Just a few day's until the farewell party. You're staying for that right?" I groaned after Tony said party. Him and his crazy need to throw a party for seriously any occasion.
"Yes, yes, of course. A victory should be honored with revels. So long as this one agree's to come with me?" Thor turned and grabbed my waist pulling me closer to him. I shook my head and smiled.
"Well, duh. Who else would I want to go to one of Tony's crazy parties with?" I leaned up and kissed his lip's.
"Hey, my parties aren't that crazy." Tony interrupted.
"Yeah, sure, sure." I rolled my eyes at him.
We soon landed at Avengers tower on the helipad. The back door's opened and Dr. Cho quickly came in, taking Clint out. Natasha walked along with them. Thor took the scepter himself to the lab. While Tony and I were sitting in the front seats of the jet and turned around to be greeted by Maria.
"Lab's all set up, boss." Maria Hill said. She greeted us with her usual friendly smile.
"Oh, uh, actually he's the boss." Tony pointed at Steve. "I just pay for everything and design everything with a little help and make everyone look cooler." Tony nudged me. I rolled my eyes and smiled.
"What the word on Strucker?" Steve asked her. I stood up from my seat and we all started walking out from the jet.
"NATO's got him."
"What about the two enhanced?" I asked. She pulled up a file on the tablet she held and she gave it to me. As Steve and I looked at it she explained.
"Wanda and Pietro Maximoff. Twins. Orphaned at 10 when a shell collapsed their apartment building. Sokovia's had a rough history. It's nowhere special, but it's on the way to everywhere special." Maria explained.
"Okay, so what about their abilities?" I asked her curiously. I really wanted to know what the hell happened to me and Tony out there.
"He's got increased metabolism and improved thermal homeostasis. Her thing is neuroelectric interfacing, telekinesis, mental manipulation."
Steve looked at us both, looking a bit confused.
"He's fast. She's weird." Maria answered him before I could give a dumbed down answer. I shot her a look. Wanda was a tiny bit like me. Only her powers weren't natural born. I could sense it when they were around. "Oh, uh, sorry Amara." Maria apologized quickly after seeing my reaction.
"Yeah." I said sourly. I walked inside the elevator. Steve followed me and I knew he could sense my tone.
"Well, they're gonna show up again." Steve stated.
"Agreed. File say's they volunteered for Strucker's experiments. It's nut's." Maria said. Ooh I knew that was going to sting at Steve.
"Right because what kind of monster would let a German scientist experiment on them to protect their country." He shot back annoyed at her.
"We're not at war, Captain." Maria said as she looked between us both.
"They are." Steve said as the elevator door closed. He put his arm around my shoulder. I took a deep breath in and laid my head on him. "Sounds like she has abilities similar to your's. I saw her, you know. She can't be much younger than you, if she's not the same age." Steve explained. I let out a tired chuckle.
"Yeah, except I might be 21 here on earth. I'm really almost 1,300 year's old. I beat even you old man." I nudged him playfully. He shook his head and let out a laugh.
"Yeah, yeah. Except to me you'll never seem that old." He playfully nudged back.
We made it upstairs and I walked into the lab where Dr. Cho set up her infirmary to heal Clint. When I had. I walked into the conversation.
"That is exactly the plan. An Helen, I expect to see you at the party on Saturday." Tony grinned.
"Unlike you, Mr. Stark. I don't have a lot of time for parties." Dr. Cho paused before continuing. "Will Thor be there?" She asked shyly.
I watched as Nat, Tony, and Clint looked at each other. That's when they noticed I was in the door.
"Yep, he'll be there with me, his girlfriend." I scoffed angrily. She looked up and saw me standing in the door way with my arms crossed.
"Oh. Hello, Amara. I didn't see you there. I'm s-sorry." She apologized.
I rolled my eyes and walked away. Tony quickly ran after me.
"Hey, kiddo. Wait up." He called out.
"Not now, Tony." I mumbled loud enough for him to hear me and to realize that I was angry. They all knew I needed space when that happened.
"Okay, hey. Really stop." Tony caught my arm and we stopped walking. "Listen, there's no need to be rude to anyone. Especially me. Dr. Cho was just asking a simple question." He explained and I rolled my eyes at him.
"Yeah, because asking if someone who's taken will be at a party like that, is just general curiosity, couldn't possibly be insinuating something else." I scoffed.
"What the heck is your problem? You've been acting weird since the mission. I know that little witch got inside your head, but you don't need to take it out on everyone else." He scoffed and so did I. I was ready to respond back with something snarky and probably a lot meaner than I meant, but he spoke again. "What did you see?" Tony asked quietly.
"I am not having this discussion right now. I said, I wasn't in the mood. And clearly have shown so by my actions. So kindly back off. I'm going to my room." I huffed away before he could argue.
I felt a little badly because Tony and I hardly ever argued. But how could he defend that? My head didn't feel like it was in the right space so I did the only sensible thing and that was to go to bed.
I stayed in my room for the next 3 days, waiting for Tony's stupid party. Thor was the only one allowed into our room. I kept everyone else out. He was somehow the only person I could even remotely tolerate when waves of anger washed over me like this. He was able to calm me down just by being present with me, or a touch of his hand.
I just didn't want to be bothered by anyone else. So, I sat and stewed in my thought's about the words said to me in that hallucination and I tried to figure out what the heck the colorful rock's I had seen were and why I was somehow involved. I didn't want to show it but I was terrified of what I had seen. Was I to be the cause of all my friend's death's?
One night as we were laying in bed Thor put his arm around me and I snuggled in close to him.
"Alright, that's enough of this. Please, my love, tell me what's wrong." Thor spoke softly.
He pushed my hair behind my ear. I couldn't even hold it in anymore and I started bawling. He just held me and gently rubbed circles on my back until I was calmed enough to speak.
"When we were about to grab the scepter. I got distracted by the memory of it..." I choked on my words.
"It being in your father's chest." He quietly finished for me. I nodded.
"Then Wanda came from behind us. I could sense something was off, but I was unprepared. I should have been paying attention and not letting thing's affect me the way they do. She played some sort of mind trick on me. It was like she managed to play a vision inside my head of my worst fear's."
"What did you see?" He asked sweetly. I tried to talk and get it out but no sound came from my mouth. Thor leaned down and kissed me softly before pulling away. "It's okay, Amara. Please tell me. I can't help if you don't let me in."
"I-It was a vision of you and me. We were dancing happily at first and it was great. But then suddenly we were surrounded by guards, and you turned on me too. Your voice said I was dangerous and I didn't belong on Asgard, that I would never be a real Asgardian and how could you possibly love someone like me." I explained. Immediately he frowned and tried to interrupt, but I put a finger up to his mouth.
"Then it changed. I saw my Dad and everyone I love. All of you were dead at my feet. Someone or something had killed you all. I ran to my Dad and checked for a pulse and apologized to him. That was when he started talking saying I let him down, I wasn't protecting the world like I promised him I would and that it was my fault he died. Because I couldn't protect him. Some how I was at the center of it all. Like I killed you all or didn't do enough and you all died. It was my fault. Then there were these colorful stones... and... and..." I sobbed some more into his chest.
"Oh, Amara. You know how much that's not even remotely true. I will love you for all eternity and even after that. You're the light of my life and existence. Whether you grew up there or not, you are an Asgardian. You are not dangerous. Powerful, sure, but not dangerous, not to me. I will protect you with everything I have. And I vow that to you. As for the other part, you can't possibly think that what happened to Phil was your fault. You couldn't have done anything more to save him, then what you had already tried to do. He would be immensely proud of the bright and beautiful young woman you are today. Your light shines as a beacon for his name, and in his honor, miss Amara Carys Coulson."
"Why do you always know the right thing to say?" I cried some more in his arms making him chuckle. Thor kissed my forehead.
"Because I love you. I know you like the back of my own hand. You're my best friend and my gorgeous, talented, brave girlfriend." Thor said sweetly again and kissed my face all over, before giving me one soft kiss on my lip's.
"Stop it." I giggled. "I love you too, Thor. More than anything else in this entire world. You're the best thing that's ever happened to me, you're my best friend and my amazing boyfriend." I said wiping away my tears. He snuggled up close to me and we peacefully fell asleep in each other's arm's.
