A Date
My thoughts were interrupted by a knocking at the door.
"Hey. I'm coming in." Steve said. I quickly put the pillow behind my back. "Hey." He said as looked at me.
"Hi, Steve."
"I just wanted to come check on you." He sat on my bed and patted the spot next to him and I moved over closer.
"I'm really okay, Steve. I just got tired." I explained quickly, but I knew he could see right through me.
"You know, I know you better than that." He moved a stray strand of hair from my face and I let out a sigh.
"I know." I fell backwards on the bed groaning. "I'm mostly just frustrated." I vented and Steve laid on his side beside me.
"Okay, why are you frustrated?" He held up his head with his hand, his elbow resting on the bed.
"I'm mad that I still don't even know anything about myself." Which was true, but I wasn't about to tell Steve I was angry that Thor didn't come back for me because he likes another girl... "After everything that happened during New York. Finding out I was possibly Asgardian, or that I am. I don't even know... I was scared to get the answers i've had questions about all my life. He promised me he'd come back. It's coming up on a year and i've just been here waiting like some type of moron." I groaned.
I felt so angry and sad. I could feel my fingers radiating again as my hand's laid on my stomach. Steve obviously took notice. He put his hand on the top of mine without any fear of me hurting him. I turned my head to look at him.
"I'm sure Thor has a reasonable explanation for not coming back. You're also not a moron." He said to me softly.
"Honestly. I'm sure this is just anxiety talking. But the only thing I can think of is that he didn't come because he found my birth parents and they didn't want to meet me. Or they're dead and he didn't want to disappoint me. So it was easier on him to not come back for me at all either way." I said sadly. A part of me also felt like that was true. The other part was that I knew he didn't care about me enough. Only her.
"I'm sure it's anything but that. If for some reason that turn's out to be true, you don't need to worry about it. Your place is here with us. Tony, Nat, Clint, Pepper, Bruce and Me. We're your family." I rolled over into his arms and he wrapped them around me. My hand's laid on his firm chest, pinned between us.
"Maybe they're right." I sighed with my forehead on his chest.
"Who? And right about what?" Steve asked curiously.
"Nat and Clint. They said we should try going out on a date." I felt Steve shift a little and his chin rested on my head. "It doesn't have to mean we start dating right away or anything. Just two friends going out alone, not that we've never done that before either... But that way if nothing comes of it we don't lose our friendship. If something does... Well I guess we take it from there." I explained.
"Well, then it's a date." Steve chuckled. I sighed in relief and snuggled into him closer if that was even possible.
He held me tightly in that position. I guess I really was tired because I fell asleep in his arms.
The next morning. I was startled awake.
"Good morning, Miss Amara. Mr. Stark asked me to wake you." Jarvis, Tony's AI system spoke to me.
"Jesus. Good Morning to you too, Jarvis." I rolled over and noticed I was in my bed alone.
"Sorry, ma'am. But, Mr. Stark wanted me to inform you, he will be out of the tower today on some important business."
"Okay, thank you." I rolled off my bed and cleaned myself up for the day.
Brushing my teeth and taking a shower. I dressed in my usual casual clothing. A pair of jean shorts and a purple tee shirt. I walked downstairs and into the kitchen looking for something to eat.
"Good morning." Steve looked up from the paper he was reading at the kitchen table, which I had failed to notice him at.
"Jesus." I almost dropped the bottle of orange juice in my hand. I caught it with my telekinetic power before it could hit the floor. As I reached down to grab it I spoke out loud. "Is it just spook Amara day today?" I turned and looked at him. He was trying to hold back his laughter.
"Sorry. I don't believe so, because I certainly never got a memo." Steve said and let go. His laughter came spilling out of him.
"I'm glad I amuse you." I raised an eyebrow at him, trying to hold back my smile. His laugh was so cute, and contagious.
"Sorry. You're reaction and face were just really cute." Steve said and I rolled my eyes. There was a crumpled piece of paper on the counter so I grabbed it and threw it a him. "Hey!"
He smirked and got up from the chair and ran after me. I giggled and tried to get away. Steve came up behind me and grabbed my waist and started to tickle me. We fell onto the couch and Steve was on top of me.
"Okay, okay I give! Stop it!" I laughed hard. Steve stopped tickling me and looked at my face.
"So, I was thinking maybe we could do that date today if you wanted? Maybe we could go out for lunch." Steve looked down at me. His hair wasn't slicked back yet like usual, so his hair was in almost in front of his eyes. I reached up and pushed it out of the way.
"I'd like that very much." I moved my hand to his cheek.
"OH, MY GOD! You two better not be doing what I think your doing!" Clint walked in from the elevator with Nat beside him. He covered his eyes like a child. Steve jumped up off from me and I sat up.
"Don't be such a baby. They are just having fun." Nat winked at me.
"Oh, my god. You guys are so embarrassing." I put my face in my hands and hung my head between my legs.
"You love us." Nat laughed. I looked up at her and stuck out my tongue.
"Okay well, if you guy's are good and finished now. We came up to ask if you wanted to go do some training?" Clint asked trying to remove the tension in the room.
"I'll take you up on that." I smiled.
Clint and I trained in the gym for a few hours. He spared with me and then we did some archery training until it was time for me to meet Steve.
"You ready?" Steve knocked on my bedroom door.
"Yeah I'll be out in a sec." I called back to him. I put on a small infinity necklace that hung up and down with a tear drop shaped diamond in the bottom loop. I held it for a minute and took a deep breath. "I wish you were here, Dad." I said quietly to myself.
Even though this is a different kind of first date. It was still my first. I wished he was here so he could see me off. I walked out the door and Steve was waiting for me. He held out his hand and I gratefully took it. We walked down the stairs and to the elevator with our hand's intertwined. When we got to the garage, Steve opened the passenger side door for me to the car we were borrowing. He was such an old fashioned gentleman. It was sweet.
"So, I was thinking maybe we could get something to eat first, then go for a walk in the park?" Steve asked as he drove us away from the tower.
"Steve that sound's really nice. Thank you for all of this." I played with my hair nervously.
"You're welcome. I'm sorry I'm a bit rusty at all of this. I haven't been on a date since 1943. And even then I don't think I've really ever been on an actual date." Steve chuckled.
"It's fine. So far, anytime I've spent with you has been lovely. It's my first date ever too..." I said and he looked at me a bit surprised.
"So then we will be get to be new at this together." He chuckled and I giggled.
We arrived at a nice sit down restaurant. We ate and talked, it was really amazing. We drove to the park, got out and began walking.
"Today has been really great, Steve." I talked as we swung our hands in between us. "What did you think?"
"I've had a great time with you. I mean, any day I spend with you is great. But today was amazing." He smiled while looking over at me.
We walked into the grass and under the shade of a tree. Steve quickly pulled me to his chest which surprised me. I let out a small nervous laugh. Steve's hand's were gently placed, but firmly holding my hip's. He crooked his head to the side and started to lean forward, our nose's rubbed together and our lip's were almost touching. A large thud, caused our attention to turn.
"Amara." Thor looked between Steve and I who were still holding onto each other. His face was ridden with surprise, that slowly showed anger. "I shall speak to you at the tower." Thor stated and swung his hammer, casting off from the ground, leaving us alone again. I took a step back from Steve and we both looked at each other.
"Uhm, I think we should go back to the tower now." Steve said nervously rubbing the back of his neck.
"I think that would be a good idea." I nodded my head slowly.
We walked back to the car awkwardly. No talking or holding hands. The car ride was silent as a grave, and we pulled into the car garage at the bottom of the tower. Steve went to open his door to get out, but I reached over and touched his hand making him turn and look at me.
"I really want to thank you for today, Steve. I'm really sorry about how quickly things got awkward earlier." I said nervously.
"Don't be sorry. I had a great time today." He turned fully towards me. "Is there something else you wanted to tell me?"
I leaned in and kissed Steve's cheek. Then I took a deep breath.
"I have feelings for you. I really enjoyed today..." I hesitated. Steve looked at me and gave me a small smile.
"But?"
"But, I really need to figure things out with Thor." I looked down at my hands. Steve pulled me chin up to look back at him.
"It's fine, Mar. Really. You're still my best friend no matter what happens. I'm really glad I got to hang out with you today." He leaned towards me and kissed my cheek too.
"Thank you..." I said softly.
We got out of the car and headed up to the top of the tower together. The elevator door opened and we walked into the penthouse lounge.
"Uhm, so Thor's back. He seems a little peeved. He's waiting for you, Amara, on the balcony." Nat said with her arm's crossed.
"I'll fill you in on what happened. Amara, you better go to him." Steve gestured to the balcony. He walked away starting to tell Natasha about what happened.
I sighed and walked over to the balcony opening the sliding door. I saw Thor standing there leaning against the railing. His hand's were folded together and he didn't budge when I opened the door. He truly was so handsome. His long blonde hair flowed down to his shoulder's, he was in his armor, his long red cape flowed down his back to the ground.
"Hey." I quietly said as I stood behind him. He still didn't move or speak. "Thor. Please say something." I sighed.
"And what exactly would you like me to say?" His face turned to look at mine from over his shoulder.
"I suppose something along the lines to why you're angry with me?" I crossed my arm's in front of my chest not a fan of his tone with me.
"Angry?" He scoffed. "Why would I be angry? Could it be because I assumed that when we last spoke you had feelings for me. That once I came back for you like I promised, you'd be waiting with open arms? Is that why you'd expect me to be angry because none of that happened?" He said sarcastically.
"That's entirely unfair. You left me here waiting for almost a year! I asked you to figure out your feelings and you so clearly did." I raised my voice at him.
"What in Valhalla's name are you talking about? I did not leave for a year." Thor stated and he left the balcony's edge, turning his body fully towards me.
"You most certainly did leave for almost a year! And you chose Jane!" I yelled.
"No, I didn't." Thor said as he looked completely confused.
"You can't lie to me about it, Thor. You were with her in London." I waved my hand out like I was pointing towards London, even though I didn't exactly know which direction it was in.
"How do you know about that?" He raised an eyebrow at me.
"Thor, your face was literally plastered all over the news. That's how I found out. I'm glad to know you would have kept that from me." I stated angrily and he looked stunned at first but then he started laughing, a very big hearty laugh. "I'm so glad you find this amusing." I scoffed and turned around beginning to walk away while Thor started to speak. I stopped but didn't look at him.
"I went to her because Heimdall, the Gate Keeper of the Bifrost in Asgard. Saw her disappear out of thin air. She had become infected with a substance known as the Aether. I had no choice but, to help rid her of it. Once we succeeded I broke it off with her for you. But, here I find you about to lay your lips on another." He growled at me and I whipped around.
"Yes fine. I began to try to move on from my feelings for you. You left me for almost a year! Even with your half way decent excuse, about why you were gone. You are the one that didn't come back or even have the decency to try and contact me. What else was I supposed do or to think?" I yelled annoyed.
I most definitely was not happy. His excuse was better than I had imagined it to be. It was almost to hard to stay mad. Almost.
"And did you?" He spoke softly and took some steps towards me. I tried to hold back the conflicted tears.
"Did I what?" I asked angrily.
"Move on from your feeling's for me. If you so wish, I will leave you alone, you can be with the spangly striped man." Thor said in a low voice as he got very close but without us touching.
I thought for a moment about what I would say. Of course I already knew my answer. But did I really want to share that with him? I think I did.
"Of course, not you big idiot!" The tears began to flow freely down my cheeks. He took that last step forward and placed his big hand on my cheek wiping away the tears with his thumb.
"I'm sorry that i've made you wait, Amara. And that I've made you cry. I do not wish to keep hurting you." He spoke so softly to me. "I'm surprised your Uncle hasn't smited me where I stand. I promised him I wouldn't hurt you."
"Wait, what did you just say? My... my U-uncle?" I stammered my words in shock.
"Yes. I did as I promised and I spoke to him. He wishes to meet you, to see you once again." Thor smiled at me, pulling my waist close to his and his other hand still resting freely on my cheek.
"That was another reason I-I thought maybe that's why you didn't come back... because I didn't have any family or that they didn't want to meet me." I looked into Thor's gorgeous blueish eyes that had hint's of green.
"Oh, no. Not at all. He has watched over you, your entire life time on Midgard. He's missed you everyday. I could take you there now if you'd like?" His voice was soft and caring as his face slowly got closer to mine.
"Please." I whispered. He was making me very confused being so close to me. "No wait! I can't just up and go. At least not without telling Tony. He would freak out if I left without saying anything." I pushed away a small amount so I could at least focus.
"Well, let us go find him." Thor said excitedly grabbing my hands and walking us back into the tower.
"He's gone to some meeting today. He will be back tonight at around 5, at least that's usually when he gets home." I pulled my hand away forcing him to stop and look at me. "We might as well wait here for him. It's only 2 hours until then."
"Then we shall wait." Thor smiled his biggest grin at me.
I could tell he wanted to come hold me again as he placed his foot towards me. I held up a finger telling him to wait one moment. He looked at me rather confused.
"You can come out now." I called out and crossed my arms once again. Steve, Nat, and Clint walked out around the corner of the hallway looking a little surprised that they had been discovered. But I could sense that they were there.
"Sorry Mar, you guy's were yelling pretty loudly. We couldn't exactly help but over hear." Clint spoke as they walked over to us. "Thor good to see you again." They shook hands.
"Thor, pleasure to see you again." Nat shook his hand next, Thor surprised her pulling closing her into one of his giant friendly hugs.
"Great to see you, Lady Natasha." They separated and Thor and Steve looked at each other.
"Thor." Steve nodded.
"Captain Rodgers." Thor nodded back.
We stood awkwardly in a circle for a moment.
"Uh, why don't we put the tv on or play a game." I tried to break up the awkward silence and the tension.
"That sounds like a great idea." Nat agreed and she cleaned up the table so we could all sit down.
I grabbed monopoly off of the shelf and brought it to the table.
