Something that's been annoying me for a while now is people (especially Twitter users) making fun of and cancelling Wanda just because she was whitewashed in the movies. While I definitely agree that it's aggravating that they chose a white actress to play a Roma character, they did have some good reasoning behind that.
DISCLAIMER: I am definitely not okay with whitewashing of any kind, HOWEVER I am really in love with MCU Wanda and I do see some reasons why she wasn't whitewashed. Sort of. I'm on both sides of this argument, honestly.
Okay, so first off, she was pretty dang white in the comics. This was obviously the choice of the artists involved. There's so many different versions of her, we can't really say she has to appear a certain way! In some comics she has red hair, in others she's a brunette. She's a vegetarian in some comics while in others she's shown eating meat. She's white in some comics and in others she's a POC. We're not even gonna go into the million times over retconned past of hers, that's way too much for me. Different artists make different choices for how they want to represent their characters.
Secondly, in the MCU she's not Roma! It's stated on the Wiki that she's of Eastern European descent, a place were there are quite a few white people. Obviously this doesn't mean that she HAS to be white, but she's also from a made-up country! For all we know, Sokovia could be mainly made up of white people. We know nothing about Sokovia, so we can't judge a country based upon a few things we've seen.
Thirdly, she can be Roma and white! The Roma are a nomadic people, meaning they migrate all the time. They're everywhere! That means there can be a white Roma person, a brown Roma person, or a black Roma person. They don't have a specific "look" to them. They're from everywhere, and we can't judge them just because we see a few photos of them.
Y'all are so quick to cancel characters and honestly cancel culture is really stupid. There's no need for it. There can be different iterations of characters, obviously. And this whole thing is such a small issue. Just because a character is white-washed (even though she's white most of the time in the comics) doesn't mean we should cancel her and pretend she doesn't exist (some antis keep saying things like "Wanda isn't in the MCU what r u talking about"). There are bigger issues to focus on, especially in the Marvel world. Focus on stuff like the James Gunn thing instead of one character.
I'm probably gonna get hate for this but seriously y'all, take a deep breath and back off from Wanda pls.
