The velvety silk of the royal carpet meets the soles of our feet, cushioning every step as Serena and I walk towards the palace elevator.

We step in to hear soft music coming from the speakers on the ceiling.

Even palace elevators have music!

"I'm tired, haha," Serena says, stretching her arm as she presses the button for the top.

"You can say that again," I stretch my arms as the elevator begins to make its way up.

"I think I'll take a warm bath and head straight to bed! What about you, Ash?" She turns her head towards me, her eyes glittering.

I scratch the back of my head with a sheepish smile.

"Eh... I was supposed to talk with your mother a couple hours earlier, heh,"

Her expression drops and she gives me an unamused look.

"Idiot,"

Serena and I part ways as we exit the elevator.

"Night, Ash!" The princess gives me a wave before making her way to her room.

I nod and turn around, walking down the hallway and towards the office.

I straighten myself before knocking.

"Enter," A voice says from inside.

I open up the smooth spruce doors and step inside to feel the warmth of the fireplace.

"Ah! Ash, there you are!" Grace steps forward from behind her desk.

"I'm sorry I was late, I was uh, busy." I scratch the back of my head sheepishly once again.

She claps her hands together, making me flinch slightly.

"Not to worry. The past is the past! Go ahead and sit down, Ash,"

I step forward and collapse on the soft leather chair in front of the desk as the Queen sits behind her desk.

"So Ash," She takes a sip of her coffee.

Drinking coffee at night?

I guess Queens tend to be busy...

I sit up straight.

"Yes?"

"If it's not too much of a hassle, I'd like you to return to the university to start your studies the day after tomorrow."

"Yeah, that's fine..." I couldn't help but be a bit disappointed.

I just started to get comfortable here...

My mind suddenly wanders over to a certain girl.

"And if you're wondering, Serena will also start her studies tomorrow as well. The only difference is that she'll be staying here instead of the dorms for her own safety," She gives me a small wink.

I nod.

After several more minutes of off-topic conversations, she dismisses me to my room as it's already gotten pretty late.

I walk back to my room and head straight to the shower.

My clothes are still damp from the lake.

Not to mention I'm freezing...

After I get changed into some warm clothes, I collapse on the bed and grab the TV remote.

Before I turn it on, I take a quick glance at the clock to see that it's already past midnight.

Well, one episode won't hurt. Right?

I yawn and rub my eyes as the warm morning light washes over my face.

Ugh.

I've been watching the TV since one in the morning...

I probably passed out sometime between 4 or 5.

Now it's 10.

I really need to start watching my sleep schedule.

I crawl out of the warm bed and walk across the cold marble floor leading to the bathroom.

I brush my teeth and change into a clean set of clothes before leaving my room and into the hallway.

Checking the menu to see if there's any good breakfast today from a board, I head down the elevator and into the dining room to grab some food.

By breakfast, I mean dessert.

Yep.

This palace literally has everything.

As I enjoy my cool dessert/breakfast, chatter from across the hall gets my attention.

A familiar boy with blond hair and a young girl were getting some yogurt in the sweets section,

I finish my frozen treat before making my way towards them.

"Hey! It's me!" I wave to them with a grin plastered on my face.

We really can change for the better, can't we?

The boy adjusts his glasses before walking towards me along with the girl.

"I'm sorry, but I don't recall meeting you," He says with an apologetic look on his face.

The young girl beside him looks unamused as she rolls her eyes at him.

"Big brother, are you that old to be forgetting stuff?! This is Ash, remember? We stopped by his house in Kanto before,"

His eyes light up as he recalls.

"OH! Right!"

He scratches the back of his head.

"Heh, sorry about that, Ash. I tend to be forgetful,"

I shake my head.

"It's okay,"

"I'm Clemont, and this is my little sister." He nudges his head in her direction.

"I'm Bonnie!" She beams.

Clemont. Bonnie.

"So Ash, we heard all about you and your girlfriend," Bonnie teases with a wink.

"My... girlfriend?" I say confusingly.

I don't remember having one...

Do I?

"Yeah! You know, your girlfriend... The princess of Kalos, Serena... The girl you are all lovey-dovey with?"

I start to get flustered for no apparent reason...

"Um uh, w-what? S-She's not my g-girlfriend!" I stutter, my cheeks warming up.

Clemont sighs and pulls her back.

"Bonnie, I told you, stop making other people uncomfortable."

She pouts and crosses her arms.

"Come on Bonnie, let's grab breakfast and head back. I need to start working on my next project,"

"Hmph. Fine, bye Ashhhh!" She waves at me before the two leave.

What a unique pair of siblings.

I decide to grab a fruit smoothie before heading back up to the room.

My path crosses with no one other than the Princess on my way back.

I swear, sometimes I question if this is just one big novel that I live in.

Out of all the people, why am I the protagonist?

She smiles and waves.

"Haiiii Ash!!"

I wave back and we relax outside the hallway, chatting.

"I'm kinda bored today. I can't really do much because of classes tomorrow," She says as she gazes up at the ceiling, resting her back on the wall.

I nod in agreement.

"I was actually going to watch an anime or two to pass time in my room,"

Her eyes brighten up and she looks back at me.

"Really? Let's watch some then! Which one?!"

I scratch the back of my head.

"Your Lie in April... I've been planning to watch it for over a year now,"

"OOH, THAT ONE! I HAVEN'T HAD TIME TO WATCH IT EITHER!!! AHH I'M SO EXCITED NOW!!" She immediately runs down the hallway towards my room like a toddler in a toy store.

"You don't even have the key..." I mutter, shaking my had with a chuckle.

We ended up watching two movies to pass the time because Serena wanted to "save the best for last."

It was evening by the time we started the show.

I never thought Serena would be this into anime.

Luckily, she called for some food in between the movies, or else we'd be starving.

We sit on the couch in the room as we finish the final scene of Your Lie in April, the anime we both wanted to see.

He turned to the piano that was way too big for him and the moment he played that first note, I was drawn in.

The melody was like a 24-color pallet, radiating with color. The notes were dancing in the air.

The girl next to me started crying. I wasn't expecting that at all.

And even so, you gave up the piano. Even though it totally changed other people's lives.

(Cut to Kaori as a kid, telling her parents she's giving up piano for violin because she wants Kousei to play again.)

When I found out we were in the same middle school, I was ecstatic. But how would I ever come to talk to you? Maybe I'd hang out at the lunch concession. Instead, I just watched you from afar.
I mean. After all. You all seemed to get along so well. There wasn't really any space in there for someone like me.

When I was a kid, I had to have an operation and I started having to be at the hospital for regular check-ups. In the first year of middle school, I collapsed and I was admitted over and over. With every visit, I was there for longer and longer. Really, I didn't get to class much in middle school, I spent more time at the hospital. And I knew something was wrong with my body.

One night, I saw my parents crying in the waiting room and I knew that my time was running out.

That's when...

That's when I broke into a run.
I didn't want to bring my regrets with me to heaven, so I stopped holding back from the things I always wanted to do.
I wasn't scared anymore to get contact lenses.
I ate what I wanted instead of always worrying about my weight.
And I took the music with all its high and mighty directives and played it the way I wanted.

And then...

I told a lie.

Just one.

I lied and said that I, Miyazono Kaori, liked Watari Ryouta.

And that lie brought you to me.

Please apologize to Watari for me... though I'm sure he's forgotten me by now.

I think we'd be fine as friends though.

I think I need someone more wholehearted and earnest than him.

And please apologize to Tsubaki for me too.
I want for there to be no hard feelings. And there was one thing I could never ask of her, to ask her directly to introduce the two of us.
I don't think she would've had an answer for me.

Tears run down Serena's face as the show ends.

I couldn't help but tear up as well, watching this masterpiece of an anime.

"D-Did he reach her?" She says softly, her head still resting on my shoulder.

"I'm sure he did, after all, Kaori still smiled."

Serena smiles sadly, taking her head off my shoulder and wiping away the remaining tears on her face.

"This was one of the better animes I've seen a while..."

I nod in agreement.

She looks back over to me as I shut off the TV.

"Hey um... Ash. do you want to go to the roof with me?"

I tilt my head in confusion.

"Sure, but why?"

"The university is launching a firework show tonight, and I'm wondering if you wanna watch it together..."

I smile and nod.

"Of course,"

She brightens and grabs my hand, yanking me out of the door and breaking into a sprint.

We run down the hallway, down two velvet palace corridors, and finally into the elevator that leads to the roof.

"W-Why are we going so fast??" I say, panting as I try to catch my breath.

"We're kinda pressed on time, hehe-" She says, still grabbing onto my wrist.

"You really wanted to watch Your Lie in April, didn't you?" I sigh.

She nods and giggles.

She really is like a little kid sometimes.

Not that I don't like it...

We step out of the elevator just in time to see the beautiful array of fireworks explode in the night sky.

"Looks like we made it in time," I say, taking a deep breath as my eyes gaze upon the night sky, littered with exploding colors.

Serena nods, mesmerized by the stunning array of fireworks.

Our hands meet as we watch the beautiful fireworks atop the roof.

I glance back at her from the sky, and she turns her head, her glittering cerulean eyes meeting mine.

She smiles, a blush growing on her face.

We lean our heads toward each other, slowly closing the gap between our faces.

Her cerulean eyes seem to sparkle even more as we get closer.

Our lips meet together for the first time as the last firework explodes in the sky, coloring the shadows around us a rose red.
