Clara Knight and Harry Styles on their Iconic Friendship, Debut Albums, and #1 Hit Collaboration

The incredibly talented duo have been inseparable since 2014, and, having to constantly dodge and deny continual relationship rumours, have refused to submit to societal pressure by remaining as close as ever—even coincidentally releasing their debut albums within just three months of each other! They open up about managing fame, confidence, and integrity in a critical world, seeking comfort in friendships, the pressure of simply existing in the media, and much more.

When Clara Knight first graced our screens in 2013 in the book-to-film adaptation of Then Came You, the world was wholly enamoured by her incredible beauty, and most importantly, floored by her award-winning, breakthrough performance. To this day, it is almost inconceivable to believe she was only 18 when she blessed us with her immense talent, and love for the big screen. The dedication she has to her craft is unmatched, and her unforgettable performances in her other films and tv shows since, makes her a staple in the film industry. Now, debuting her music career only three months prior to this interview, with some of her songs still remaining on the charts, Clara Marie Knight is surely not one to be forgotten, and her mark on this world has, indeed, been solidified.

Harry Styles has gone from pop-sensation and heartthrob boyband frontman in One Direction, to now an incredibly successful solo musician, debuting his solo career with the release of his self-titled debut album just a few days ago, and he is determined to show the world he has more to offer than just being one-fifth, later one-fourth, of a best-selling boyband. With this album, Harry hopes to break away from that boyband label, and is, indeed, forming a new and improved image for himself. His new haircut, and album, do just that. With his #1 hit single, Sign of the Times, remaining at that top spot on the charts since it released, Styles certainly has promise in his new endeavour in becoming a solo artist, and he hopes to leave his mark on the world through it. In his own words, Styles has "tried to be more vulnerable" in his debut album, and consequently, has generated more positive attention from it's release. His incredible effort and dedication to his music is certainly evident in his debut, and now sitting with us today, he could not be more excited to talk about it.

With the release of their first ever collaboration, entitled Ever Since New York, both Clara and Harry—and I refer to them by their first names because they have made me feel so comfortable that they already feel like friends—are ready to share their stories and extent of their beautiful friendship.

R: Can I just start by thanking you two deeply for sitting with me this early in the morning to talk about your careers and lives, and just for being genuinely kind people? You both made sure that I was comfortable, when I should've done that first! [laughs].

C: Wow, that was so lovely, of course, thank you for having us!

H: The pleasure is all ours, Rachel.

R: Tell me the truth, are you both always this welcoming?

C: We try to be.

H: [nods in agreement].

R: Okay, let's start with you, Clara. This is your first ever music project, correct?

C: Correct.

R: So, you completely surprised fans with this album—in a good way—but how did this masterpiece come to be? Have you dabbled in music before?

C: How much time do you have?

H: [laughs].

R: [laughs] All day, if you need!

C: Amazing! [laughs] Firstly, thank you for the compliment, that's so kind. Secondly, I won't go into too much detail, but I used to absolutely adore singing when I was a kid. Acting was always my first passion, and that's a much larger conversation, but my parents and friends told me that I had a good voice. I brushed them off, though, because I didn't really want to pursue it further, like I did acting. I haven't professionally done anything in music prior to this, but I had done some covers on YouTube in the past, and once I started to gain some traction, I realised that I could manage both acting and music simultaneously, as long as I had the resources to cope with the challenges and stresses of both industries. The making of this album, and watching my friends who are pursuing this career go through their processes, have honestly made me fall in love with the craft.

H: We've always encouraged her to make music too, by the way.

R: I was just about to ask you a similar question! Before we get into the specifics of Ever Since New York and your debut, Harry, I just wanted to ask you both how you met. I'm sure you've both read and heard all of the countless rumours of your iconic friendship possibly being turned into a relationship, but what do you both make of those stories? There's something magnifying about you two, and you seemed to hit it off quickly, which most likely produced these endless comments.

H: That's a big question [chuckles], but I'll start with how we met. Clara met Niall a year prior, they met at a coffee shop or something and became really good friends, and after that, all that the rest of us—'us', as in, the band—would hear was 'my friend, Clara, this', 'my friend, Clara, that'. We'd all seen Then Came You, so of course, we knew of her and her incredible talent, but we hadn't met her in person. I'm not sure why it took another year for the rest of us to meet, but we all finally got acquainted at the 2014 BRITs. Niall somehow managed to bring her as a guest.

C: Niall must've tried pretty hard, because that's not usually allowed [laughs], you're supposed to be invited.

H: He definitely did [chuckles]. Niall introduced us, and we all became really close from then. I think that's why people sort of say that we're 'iconic', as you very kindly put it.

R: [laughs] Exactly right! That is such a sweet story, I love that.

C: I'm just incredibly lucky to have them in my life, they're truly amazing people, and five of the kindest humans ever. To address the second part of your question, Rachel, we've dispelled those rumours multiple times, but it's hard to solidify that kind of thing, you know? I mean, people think I'm dating every man I know, it's crazy. Of course, people are going to think and say whatever they want to think or say, and they're completely entitled to do so, but it gets kind of annoying when people tell you what they think of your life, insisting in person, and even sending messages to your family members. It's very irritating when it gets to the point of harassment.

H: It can get pretty overwhelming sometimes, and like Clara said, it's quite difficult to control when it suddenly escalates.

R: I can see how that would get frustrating, especially if you're in relationships. I'm going to sound very hypocritical here, but Clara, you're in a pretty public relationship now, and you've had previous public relationships in the past, right?

C: Right.

R: Harry, you've also had some fairly public relationships over the course of your career, too. How do those rumours impact the current relationship aspect of your lives for the both of you? Some people seem to think that you may have split with your ex partners because of the rumours.

H: The frustrating thing is, it's already very difficult forming a connection with someone in general, whether platonic or romantic, when you're in this industry, and a lot of that is because of the amount of your life that is available to the world. It's hard to find someone who can ignore, or even manage, all of that, and kind of push it to the side, if that makes sense. Yeah, the rumour thing impacts it a lot. I think, if you try to ignore it and, you know, not go on social media as often, it can be easier to manage, but yeah, rumours do impact relationships quite a bit.

R: No, that absolutely makes sense. I totally understand, it would be very difficult. Clara, what's your take on this?

C: Yeah, I definitely agree and resonate with what H said. Just personally, the pressure of all of that kind of thing got to my ex and I, and it really causes a lot of issues in a relationship if you or your partner aren't used to, or comfortable ignoring, it. So, yeah, that was one of the main reasons why we broke up, and we've both briefly spoken about that before. Ultimately, I've found that it's best to have a more private relationship—well, as private as possible—because I prefer to keep certain things, like my relationships, which are so intimate and delicate, personal, and only between my partner and myself, you know?

H: I feel the same. You've described that so eloquently, Clara.

R: Wow, like Harry just praised, that was beautifully articulated, Clara. I totally agree. So, moving on, because I know you two want to speak more about the collaboration, what made you both decide to do this song? Harry, if you could speak about what the process was like, why did you want Clara to feature on your first album?

H: Of course, yeah. Happy to speak about it! [grins] I approached Clara about Ever Since New York right when I started writing the song, and once I got, maybe less than halfway through the first verse, I felt like something was missing. [looks at Clara] Clara was, of course, the first person I thought of, so I asked her if she wanted to possibly collaborate with me on the track, and she, thankfully, said yes! [smiles when Clara looks at him] She really put her whole heart and talent into the track, which just tied it together perfectly. She made the song what it is now, and we think it's pretty good.

C: Thankfully and enthusiastically said yes, Harry! [laughs]. It was genuinely such an incredible experience, I'm so grateful to Harry for the song. It was such a privilege to work with H, and co-write the track. The fact that Harry is my first music collaboration made the song all the more special, too.

H: The pleasure is all mine, Cee [smiles at Clara again]. The process was just us hanging out like we usually do, but with the exception of writing the song together, and eventually recording it in the studio. It wasn't really any different from what we usually do when we're together, though.

R: Making a song with your best friend sounds like so much fun, wow! I know you'll hate me for asking this, Harry, but the fans have been dying to know because they've been hypothesising and dissecting every song, is Woman about Clara?

C: [laughs and looks at Harry] Oh, this will be interesting. I can't wait to hear your answer.

H: [shifts in his seat and glances away briefly before smirking a little] It's about whatever, or whoever, people want it to be about.

C: [chuckles jokingly] It's about a specific woman, I'm sure.

H: It's about a specific woman! [smirks again and glances at Clara before facing Rachel] There you go.

R: [laughs] That was very clever, I don't even think Clara knows! You heard it here first, everyone, the song Woman is about a woman! Possibly the woman sitting in front of me, or another woman. Who knows?

H: [laughs] Who knows, indeed, Rachel?

R: Okay, okay, it's time to get serious again. On to the rest of your album, Harry...
