Chapter 8
"Beautiful huh?" Percy asked.
"Yeah." Annabeth mumbled. They were standing on the balcony. An expanse of stars stretched out before them.
A similar scene came into his mind. They were on a boat, over looking the same stars. He heard a vague voice in his head saying, "Bob says hello."
Percy stared at Annabeth. The moon shone on her hair, making it shine a golden colour. Her eyes looked like molten silver.
"You're staring at me." Annabeth declared, still staring straight ahead.
Percy blushed and scoffed. "No! No. Why would I be staring at you? I can do this, you can't! Ha Ha Ha!. That's funny."
Annabeth smirked at him and raised an eyebrow.
Percy blushed brighter. "You are the first girl I've ever met who wasn't scared out by this crown."
"Oh really?" Annabeth asked.
"Yeah." He studied her face, wondering if she would think him crazy if he told her he knew exactly who she was. "Tell me more about yourself." He said.
Annabeth tensed and folded her arm on the balcony railing. Before Percy could even tell her that she didn't have to talk about it, if she didn't want to; she started to speak.
"My mom died giving birth to me. I grew up with my dad. He was amazingly kind and generous. He loved me so much and told me that every night." She fingered a beaded neckless that hung around her neck. It didn't match very well with her ball attire but Percy could tell that it was something too important to remove even for a second. On it, hung several beads of different colours, two rings, and a red coral pendant.
Percy resisted the urge to tell her that he had a very similar neckless around his neck at that very same moment.
Annabeth showed him one of the rings. "That was my mom's and dad's engagement ring."
Her fingers swept towards the other ring. This one was a silver band with a single sea green stud at the top. Inside the band, the words 'As long as we're together.' was carved in.
"This one..." Annabeth trailed off. "I'm not sure. I can't remember."
She gazed back at the stars. "But yeah. So my dad decided I needed a mother and he married another woman. queen Helena. But then, soon afterwards, he died. No one really knew how. One day, he just went inside the woods near our palace because of someone else's cry of distress and he never came back. That night..." She hesitated as if deciding whether it was safe to tell him or not. "That night, I found a dagger under my pillow. It felt special. When I touched it, indistinct memories flew through my mind."
She sighed. "Queen Helena's been trying to make my life a misery from that day on. She'd lock me up in my room and starve me for weeks and... do other horrible stuff."
Percy pulled her closer to him, wrapping her in his embrace, knowing that she needed the comfort. "Can't believe I'm gonna marry her." He muttered.
"Good luck with that." Annabeth said weekly with a laugh, but her voice was broken. "Hey, then we could be cousins huh?"
Percy frowned. "I'm not going to marry her. I'll convince my dad and find someone else." His eyes flickered towards Annabeth.
Annabeth turned around to face him and wrapped her arms around his neck. "Piper's pretty." She said nonchalantly.
"Jason would kill me." Percy replied.
They were silent for a while, just content with watching each other. "Percy?" Annabeth asked. "Thank you."
"What for?" Percy asked.
"For being there with me." Percy had the feeling that she wasn't just talking about the last few days.
Percy's palms felt sweaty and his brain started turning to mush they leaned in.
Then something caught his eyes. A speck of silver flying through the air. He only had a moment to react. He pushed Annabeth out of the way, toppling over her. "Stay down." Percy muttered. They were lying in a corner of the balcony, well hidden with the shadows.
The outline of a figure slid across the door leading back inside. It slipped back through the wooden oak doors and dissoaeared back down the stairs. Percy and Annabeth stumbled onto their feet.
Percy walked forward and picked up what was now lying on the floor. It was small, silver knife.
Annabeth gasped.
"It was heading straight at your back." Percy muttered. "And it wouldn't have missed."
It didn't take very long to figure out what was happening. Someone was trying to kill Annabeth.
