chapter five

AT school, Daichi stays with Asahi. Both rather quiet people, they enjoy their silence as they eat, do work or simply sit in the corridors. Of course after Suga's absence, the silence feels more of a burden than something to appreciate. However, Daichi brings good news this time. He brings tales of the grey haired boy that once smile so carelessly that he was spring embodied.

He spots Asahi in the library, Nishinoya bouncing around him animatedly. His hair is tied into a loose bun, strands casted over his deep eyes. Despite the work that is laid before him, he chats happily away to Noya. Daichi smiles softly, getting his phone out of his pocket to capture the moment. "Suga was right." He mumbles under his breath. "They're rather inseparable."

After the months when Koushi left, the volleyball court of Karasuno High grew quieter. They didn't talk anymore: Tsukishima only spoke to Yamaguchi like before, Kageyama and Hinata only sparing short glances filled with the memories of their mystery spike; Tanaka does not dare to even look at Kiyoko, and Yaichi - poor Yaichi - attempts time after time to alight the spark that once held them all together. But how does one ignite a passion that they themselves do not have? It was Suga that brought them together, and it was him who led them astray.

Daichi walks over to the pair, Noya's smile suppressing slightly. Hey Captain! He almost says, hesitating slightly. He makes himself remember that there is no volleyball club, really. There is nothing but memories.

"Hi, Noya." Daichi says in a soft voice, eyes crinkling at the sides. He turns to Asahi. "I need to talk to you."

"Jeez," the larger boy mumbles, twiddling with the pen in front of him. "So formal." He flashes a shy smile, but there is worry in his eyes.

"Sorry to be a pain, Noya."

"Eh, no worries Daichi man!" He exclaims, grinning widely. "I'm gonna see 'Sahi later, aren't I?" A slight smirk tugs at his lips as Asahi groans loudly at the nickname. A rumble grows in Daichi's chest, the suppressing of a laugh. Outside, the cherry blossoms blow and the sun gleams over them. A good day, one of the few they've had in the last six months.

"'Sahi?" Daichi grins once Noya has left. Asahi crumbles into his chair, a long arm slung over his face in embarrassment.

"Please, stop."

"I mean as far as nicknames go, it's kinda cute."

"Please, Daichi!"

"Fine! Fine!" He chuckles, sliding the phone across the table. Asahi peers over, a single eye open. A gasp escapes his mouth.

"Is that..."

"Yep." Daichi speaks for his friend, grinning widely. "He went to the park."

The photo details Suga's day with Daichi beforehand, next to the cherry blossom trees. Beside Koushi, the sun peers over as though to say hello, petals resting on his shoulder. His fair skin seems more tanned, eyes of grey startling and crinkled. There is a smile on his face, one that almost reminisces a time of long before.

"Holy... I mean... How?" Asahi asks, bewilderment seizing his face. "I thought he was gone for...for good."

Daichi shrugs. "So did everyone, I guess."

"Do you think he'd want to see me?" There is a hopeful glint to the larger boys voice, a rekindled hope that was long forgotten. The two of them, Daichi and Asahi, had managed each other's presence for so long with no quarrels, but there was still a shared knowledge that nothing was the same without Suga. "I mean, I know it's been months...but...perhaps?" He looks to Daichi, his elder and more confident friend, for aid. Daichi only thinks: I wish Suga were here himself.

"Well, I wouldn't know." He shrugs, and Asahi's smile drops. "But," Daichi begins, watching hope seep into his friends eyes once more, "you may as well come by. I think he'll appreciate the company."

"Yeah...I would like that."

"So..." Daichi begins, his air of severity dropping. The corners of his mouth break out into a wide grin, spiking Asahi's nervousness.

"What..."

"Noya, huh?"

"OH MY GOD, DAICHI!"

The rest of that afternoon is filled with smiles and laughter as the cherry blossoms blow in the midday spring breeze. It almost feels the old times again, as if Suga never left, as if the volleyball club was the same again. For once, their minds are not filled with worry but only jokes and laughter. With every blush and groan that comes from Asahi, chuckling erupts from the other. It almost feels normal again.

Later that evening, Suga's phone vibrates for the first time in a while. It is Daichi.

Dai <3
Asahi wants to say hi....

Suga
Yeah. I would like that
