Chapter 4

"Camilla," Eve's grandmother said, "I'm so sorry about what happened! Absolutely horrendous news!"

Eve's mother, Camilla, wiped a stray tear from her eye. She was pulled into the tight arms of her own mother.

"Evelyn!" Camilla yelled up the stairs. She turned to her mother. "I don't know where the manners in that girl have disappeared to! Evelyn!"

Eve came down the stairs slowly. She would do anything to avoid seeing her grandmother. The lady was absolutely ghastly. She always had something about Eve's appearance to mumble about, or something about her actions to make her grumble. All in all, she was not a pleasant lady.

"Evelyn, you shouldn't leave your grandmother waiting," she groaned causing Eve to roll her eyes. "And don't you show me that attitude. I'd have thought you would be behaving well with all that your parents are going through. And I don't know what is going to happen now that Madison isn't here to show you how to act appropriately."

Eve held back all that she was desperate to say. It was difficult not biting back with all the harsh words she wanted to say. How could one woman make her so angry?

"Evelyn, go and set the table up for supper," her mother said, seemingly sensing Eve's self control ebbing away.

Eve did as she was told and hurried away into the dining room. She let out a deep breath as soon as the door had closed behind her. At least for a few moments she would have some peace.

A few minutes later, just as Eve was putting the final fork down, she heard her fathers voice from the front hallway. He had arrived home from work, and Eve knew that she would no longer have peace. It was dinner time.

The three adults filed in and took their seats around the table, leaving a seat empty for her. But Eve hesitated. Her grandmother was sat in Madison's usual seat, and it all felt so wrong in Eve's mind. How dare she sit in he sisters seat? Didn't she have a heart?

"Evelyn, sit down," her mother said. "Dinner is going cold."

But Eve stayed frozen. She was just staring at her grandmother.

"Evelyn, sit down!" Her father yelled.

Finally, Eve broke from her trance and took the final seat. She stayed silent until everyone had taken their food, and at last she reached for some potatoes.

"How have you been coping, Ian?" Grandmother asked her father, her eyes soft and loving as she looked at her son-in-law with such pity.

"Well, it's been very difficult. I just can't believe that our dear Madison has gone. And Evelyn hasn't been making it easy for us," he added, sending a glare in her direction.

Eve's brown eyes were wide with shock and confusion as she froze, a potato halfway towards her mouth. She had made it difficult for them?

"What has she been doing now?" Grandmother asked, ignoring Eve's gaping mouth. It was almost as if they didn't remember that Eve was sat with them.

"Evelyn was the one to find the body. She was out past curfew and in an area that we had forbidden her to go after dark," her father said.

"Come on! Madison used to stay out past curfew all the time!" Eve interrupted.

"Madison never stayed out past curfew," her mother said. Eve scoffed.

We're her parents really serious? She knew for a fact that this wasn't true. She used to hear Madison sneak in at ungodly hours. They must have decided to ignore it.

"Don't you care that your sister is dead?" Grandmother asked.

Eve stood up so suddenly that he chair fell over and landed on the floor with a large thump. But she didn't move to pick it up. Instead, she turned to her grandmother.

"Don't you dare say that I don't care! Of course I care! She was my sister!" She screamed as she hopped over the chair legs and stormed out if the room.

She opened the front door of the house and ran down the steps, letting the door slam behind her. She didn't know where she was running, but she didn't stop.

She had reached the old park that her and Madison used to play in as kids before she realised that she needed to stop running to catch her breath.

Walking over to the old set of swings, Eve tried her best to hold back the tears. There were two children playing on the slides with their mother watching from a bench.

They reminded Eve of herself and her sister all those years ago, when they would play together like that. She closed her eyes in attempt to block out the painful image.

She sat there for a while before she heard the swing next to her creak.

"You needed to escape from home?" Tyler asked, watching her closely. When she didn't answer he kept talking. "Well, I did. My parents are so insensitive about it."

"What happened to her?" Eve asked.

"Madison? I don't know. I was at home," he answered. "I didn't even realise that she had gone out."

"I don't believe that for a second. I know that you know something."

Eve had been thinking about it ever since they had visited the crime scene and has seen Tyler. It was just too suspicious.

"Eve, I know we haven't always seen eye to eye, but you can't blame me for what happened!" He replied, suddenly very angry.

"Why?"

"Because I didn't do it!" He yelled, his eyes wide as he shook his head. He had stopped swinging all together and he got up from the swing. Eve mimicked him and turned to face him.

"I know it was you, Tyler. I will find out the truth and you will pay," Eve said. Her voice was deadly serious and it didn't waver once as she spoke. She looked him in the eye, almost daring him to flinch away. But he didn't. The only sign Eve had that he understood was a very subtle movement in his throat. It was like a gulp, and it only added to her suspicion.

One thing she was certain of was that  she would get to the bottom of it. She would stop being blamed, and in order for that to happen she would find out who killed her sister.

She looked at Tyler for one more moment before she turned away and began her walk home.

No, what she said wasn't a threat. It was a promise. And Eve wasn't the kind of person to break a promise.

A/N- hey beautiful people! I've written this on my phone whilst we in the car (this is the seventh hour of travelling today!) so there may be a few mistakes! I'll edit it when I get home on Monday!
