Chapter 3
The questions had been repeated for what felt like hours to Eve. She had made her official statement at the police station, describing what she had seen and insisting that she hadn't seen who had done it.
After being thoroughly questioned, the cops still didn't seem to fully believe her. Their subtle glances at one another and the long notes that they wrote about everything Eve was saying didn't go unnoticed.
"Can I go home now?" Eve asked for the third time. The cops looked at one another. Finally, the cop from the previous night nodded his head.
"We will be in touch if we have any further questions. And interviews with your parents will occur this afternoon. Please tell them to expect us."
"Of course, sir," she replied in a quiet voice.
The walk home was short, but Eve walked slowly to delay her inevitable arrival. It would be difficult to face her parent's sad eyes, and she had avoided them since the previous night. That would no doubt add to their suspicion that it had been her who murdered Madison.
A dark blanket of grief seemed to be laid out over the town. It seemed almost impossible that the news would have spread so quickly, but in the small town of Loholm, this speed was ordinary.
People whom Eve passed avoided her eyes, with some even turning in another direction once they saw her. Only very few people gave Eve glances of pity, before hurrying home away from her.
Eve sighed. Who knew that her life would change so suddenly in just one evening? Not only did she have the grief for her sister to worry about, it seemed that she would have no one to listen to her. At least her friends would be different. They would understand no matter what.
When Eve had finally reached home she unlocked the door and crept inside. She could hear her parent's voices through the gap under the living room door, so she turned the other way and headed up the stairs and into her bedroom. It was the only place that felt free from the judgement that she could feel hanging around in the shadows.
"Evelyn, is that you home?" her mother yelled up the stairs.
"Yes!" she called back.
"Come down stairs. We're going to the woods to see if there is anything that we recognise. Officer Smith is coming to pick us up now."
"I'm coming," was the half-hearted reply. In all honesty, Eve didn't want to visit the disturbing scene next to Lake Loholm. She didn't think that she could take seeing the place where her sister died once again.
The drive to the woods went by in a daze. It was the same officer from the night before, and he had given Eve a pitying nod as she squeezed into the back of the car with her mother.
An uncomfortable silence hovered around them, and somehow, as they began driving through the woods, it seemed more desolate than usual.
"We'll have to walk from here. There's no road any further." Officer Smith said as he pulled the car over and opened his door. The rest of the family followed.
There was a cool breeze sweeping through the trees, and Eve wrapped her arms around herself tighter. When she was walking home the night before she hadn't even noticed that it was cold. It was probably because she was too busy thinking about what had happened that evening. But she didn't feel right thinking about that anymore.
It was odd. It had gone from being the best night of her life to the worst in just seconds.
Eve didn't listen to what the officer was saying when they reached the crime scene. She didn't hear the voices of the other cops who were guarding the area. She didn't even notice when all voices disappeared as soon as they had reached the clearing. Like everyone was too afraid to speak in front of the grieving family.
Her mother began crying. It wasn't the pretty and quiet crying that Eve had seen when her mother had been sick or had heard bad news. No, it was full body wrenching sobs.
Her father was less raucous with his cries, but the silent tears and quiet whimpers were enough to haunt anyone around.
But Eve didn't make any noise at all. No tears spilt from her eyes, and her frame was still. She just stared. Stared at the place where the body once hung.
She could almost see Madison there again. This time she was hung in the light, and Eve could see her much more clearly. It might have been her imagination, but there were many more cuts than the night before. Her skin was an almost a silvery white, and the blood dripping down looked almost fake.
Surely this wasn't her sister? Maye it had all been a mistake, and she had misidentified the body.
As much as Eve hoped, she knew that her thought and hopes weren't true.
Footsteps could be heard on the other side of the clearing. Something was different about these ones. It wasn't the innocent sounding footsteps of the cops. Instead, they sounded threatening.
Eve looked up.
Tyler Carter was stood there, looking around the scene. Eve scowled at him.
She had never liked Tyler and always had thought that Madison was too good for him. When he had first asked her out, Madison had been so excited. Eve had made sure not to show any excitement.
As much as she had wanted Madison to be happy, she had known that Tyler was the wrong person for her perfect older sister. Madison's perfect grades and impeccable attendance greatly contrasted with Tyler's low GPA and his habit of skipping class.
Eve studied him as he was talking to Officer Smith. He seemed nervous and uncomfortable. He was fidgeting with his hands and paying no attention to the officer. Instead, his eyes didn't stop moving. It was as if he was searching for something.
And Eve was suspicious.
