60. Moon and Stars

The stars, far away and shining bright,
Asked of the moon, on an inky night,
"Can you tell us, glowing sphere of light,
About the ball that you go around?

With its blobs of white and streaks of green,
That shines with a gentle azure sheen,
What all, in many years, you have seen
About the ball that you go around?"

The moon glowed silently for a while,
And then flashed a scintillating smile,
Spinning a length of many a mile,
About the ball that it went around.

To the stars, said the mellifluous moon,
"It's neither a ball nor a balloon,
It is called Earth, to life it's a boon,
The blue planet that I go around.

It has mountains high and oceans deep,
Tall trees, birds that fly, creatures that leap,
Flowers, fruits on plants or vines that creep,
Lively, the planet I go around.

But humans are contradictory,
Scientific and oratory,
Praise us, sing about the sun's glory,
Which lights the planet I go around."

"That is wonderful, but you seem sad,
Nice not to be an astral nomad,
We the stars would certainly be glad,
To have a planet to go around."

"Pursuit of knowledge they're persistent,
Conquered space, to know more insistent,
Yet never learnt to be coexistent,
With others on Earth that I go around.

Earth has riches more than humans need,
But they are consumed with endless greed,
Few, if any, to reason do heed,
Living on Earth that I go around.

Each day and night, I pull the tides,
See avarice that in their heart hides,
And know their mindless progress strides,
Are doom for the Earth I go around."

The stars went quiet with a soft sigh,
The moon moved silently in the sky,
That bleak future neither could deny,
Awaited Earth the moon goes around.

Heedless of celestial sorrow,
Mankind its reckless path does follow,
Unwary not many a morrow,
Left for Earth that the moon goes around.
